Getting mixed signals from Reddit. Furthermore I shall henceforth be on Lemmy full time.

Getting mixed signals from Reddit. Furthermore I shall henceforth be on Lemmy full time.
They keep sending me emails trying to get me to come back and I'm like "Unban my fucking account and I'll think about it."
My ban was for "Abusing the report system"
ie: Using it at all
It's because they are sadistic, corporate bastards that need to be taken down! All corporate bastards need to be taken down.
We don't need corporations, we need all volunteer, donation-funded organizations.
My account just got suspended for mocking JD Vance in a joke thread. I appealed and got a permaban in response.
Mine was suspended for bullying or some shit because I told Mrs Guyliner to get fucked when she was taking her little vacation to Greenland
You still get banned here too. The mods can disagree politically and just ban you as they can on reddit.
Theres like, a little bit more transparency with the modlog
Just got 7 day ban for wishing that Elon musk poof out of existance. Fuck Reddit, and fuck the tyrannical Reddit admins.
Yep that’s why I’m here. They banned my 12 year account for sympathizing with Luigi.
Reddit simply doesn't want an active user base. They want passive viewers ingesting AI generated content. Much better for advertising revenue that way.
You can't even play Nintendo these days
We're Gooigi gang here. So watch yourself.
If you're not a russian orc troll, you're not welcome on reddit these days.
I received a 7 day ban for threatening violence. My comment was, "He should have spray-painted a swastika in red" in response to video of a guy who spray-painted "USA" on a presidential placard in Trump Tower. I'm done with Reddit after 11 years.
Told another user to take Trump's advice and drink bleach. He's allowed to say it but apparently not me.
Whatever. Reddit has always been a barely redeemable corpo platform. I'm hoping Digg comes back ActivityPub compliant like Threads and puts the final nail in that shithole's corpse box.
So is Lemmy the dumping ground for people getting banned on reddit now?
Absolutely. I lost my 15 year account for using the phrase 'burn it all down' entirely metaphorically. They really, really didn't like Canadians pushing back. Fuck those guys.
I hope Reddit dies in a fire, and not a metaphorical one. One with the ownership group literally aflame. And I'd like to roast marshmallows over that fire.
Less dumping ground and more release valve. The people Reddit is jettisoning are many of their more active and prodigious content creators and contributors. The site admins simply don't want new human content anymore. They want passive observers who will consume advertisement content without creating drama.
What they'll end up with is bots watching Russian trolls.
Yes it's how I got here, and hopefully Lemmy doesn't turn to shit the way reddit did because of its decentralized nature I hope
It's the next best thing. ¯(ツ)/¯
Honestly that's how I got here lol.
Tried it out when the API changes were announced, but let's be real, Lemmy doesn't have as much content or user interaction.
It's allowed me to stop doom scrolling as much, but I do miss some niche communities
You get used to it. Been here happily for coming on two years. Honestly, less content means I can't scroll 24/7 which has turned into a positive for me.
Fewer niche communities definitely sucks though. Time to start one I guess? :P
Yep, that is why I am here
I think it's more like getting used to the freedoms of Lemmy increases the likelihood of popping up on the radar of some dubious Reddit admins.
Odd since it's arguably just as easy to make a new reddit account
But why would I want to make a new account on Reddit after getting banned for saying things that people need to hear?
If Reddit wants some passive bullshit audience that can’t talk back, and that swallows bullshit posting, I’m good elsewhere.
That would assume you dont have a grudge against the site for banning you.
Can we talk about how screwed up that streak notification is? Let's encourage people who show signs of unhealthy usage of the platform to further their addiction?
You have a 300 day streak of using heroin, don't stop now!
Wait until you hear about sportsbook apps
But my streak is at 419, I can't stop now!
people who show signs of unhealthy usage of the platform
Hey! (You're absolutely right)
Daily usage streaks isn’t a “screwed up” notification.
Plenty of people read a newspaper everyday. Or check socials each day.
A more accurate measure for unhealthy, addictive usage would be hours per day, or week.
Exactly like my account except 30ish days ago. Welcome to Lemmy! If you're reading this comment the ban bots haven't taken over:
Luigi Mangione Innocent Death Elon Musk Trump
if reddit bots could read this they'd be very upset
Reddit created an account on your behalf and banned you again for this
Reddit bans you again in absentia
Well fuc
Reddit banned all the people that made it fun, now the only people left are the boring ones and bots lol
I got banned for pointing out that ICE are a human trafficking terrorist gang
If you ever wonder why nobody calls it terrorism when America does it, it is because people are not allowed to do so.
They ban facts now? Wow what a dump, I hope everyone that works there is time-teleported into an Auschwitz shower in 1944.
These days both Twitter and Reddit have wacky UI messages written by completely different teams. One team is all business-like as in "Here's some stern warnings you're not going to like." The other team is all casual and wayyy too friendly and fellow-kidsy, like "Did someone say MEMES?" (to which most reasonable people respond "fuck you Elon/Spez, you're not funny")
It's just the same team doing both
But they’re playing both sides, so that they always come out on top.
Reading all these ban stories, I'm glad I left during the API thing! I don't like censoring myself.
Hello everyone. You're not alone. I got banned like for 4-5 times, using local Ukrainian words that may look like slurs, but they aren't.
I got unbanned, but I am still too scared to write anything about politics on Reddit. I want a working account there for IT questions.
Make another account then. I have a shit posting account for making comments I know will be dicey. Reddit mods are fat slobs don't let them stop you from living your dreams.
they will detect your alternate account through fingerprinting you
it's where I am currently, unable to use any of my 100% wholesome and positively contributing accounts because I shared the opinion of "Oh no, anyways" on a burning Tesla dealership post, got banned from world news with no explanation, asked for elaboration and did not receive it, and then continued to post in that sub with another account.
did I ban evade? yes. did I first attempt to find out why I was banned? yes. was I ignored and thus continued to participate with other accounts, being careful to say nothing even close to provocative with those accounts? yes.
didn't matter. they identified it as the same account, they banned it.
My solution is to browse subreddits without signing in so whenever I go to up vote or down vote anything I can't and think, "oh right," then go back to Lemmy (which is quickly becoming a higher quality experience anyways).
Reddit mods are fat slobs who can be easily duped, but Reddit algorithims will autoban you for making new accounts.
I'm basically exiled from it until I decide to get a new device and sign in on a new network other than my home or my work.
Luckily, I've never had issues with reddit mods, but I received a f*ck ton of global bans on r/reddit_ukr (getting carpet bombed by russian bots and the half of the comments are [deleted])
It's the time to discover the fediverse ig. Btw any ideas where I can dump a ton of random IT memes?
they keep banning any other accounts I made there over being linked with the first one. I have tried unique email addresses and everything but they still figure it out within 24 hours, even when I 'm not allowed to post anything. So I just dont use reddit at all anymore.
It's a bot farm.
Everything is just rage bait
Bot farm, rage bait, psy op.
I've had my reddit account for 17 years and I received my first warning for inciting violence because I commented "this makes me want to make a whip and go to town on these people" (a reference to Jesus running out the money changers in the temple) on a video of a megachurch service showing a woman painting trump bowing to a cross.
Yeah, can't just hang out over there being a decent human being, they want to the the new compliment to X
My reddit account got a strike by an admin for describing the risks involved in traveling to the USA currently (abduction, torture for an undetermined amount of time). The appeal I made to that was accepted but it left a sour taste in my mouth.
Lucky you, you got handled by a moderator who wasn't a raging Trump whore.
I got permabanned after a week long ban for "threatening violence" when I suggested that if a Trump was elected (it was in Oct24) started directley Aiding Russia in their invasion of Europe, that they'd probably end up with a dead president. I appealed and suggested that I wasn't threatening anyone, and that whoever banned me, was politically biased and triggered. and they flipped out and perma'd me.
That's pretty lenient, most people get permabans
Lemmy. The support group for burned reddit veterans.
We were there. We put in thousands of hours of work. Years of moderating. Free work. Content creators. People who commented. Voted. All that karma ...
All gone cause you upvoted an anti trump or musk post. Or maybe you upvoted a photo of a tessler burning.
Maybe you didn't think Luigi should get the death penalty.
Don't worry brother. Upvote what you want. Be free with the rest of us.
Check out https://lemmy.world/c/iselonmuskdeadyet
I wonder if the reason is because 50501 started on Reddit and they are determined to not let it happen again.
They bent the knee. Hard.
Many many years and ass loads of karma....
But apparently LIKING posts can get you banned now. What a shit show.
I got banned for saying people should engage in mass protest against the arrest of judges and prevent anyone from entering and leaving the building in which they are held until they are released.
I'll create a new Reddit account when I can be bothered to create a new email address.
What were you banned for?
I suggested someone add an icon of torches and pitchforks to an email they were sending to company to complain.
Banned for inciting violence.
It's nuts, but once I learned that it was just an LLM doing content moderation (and probably the appeals, too), things made a lot more sense.
Spez is the exact kind of guy who would believe that community moderation is an "unsolved problem" and not, y'know, perfectly solvable by the same ol': ya hire people to do it.
I got banned after 15 years for asking why we can't organize to cyberbully Trump's current head of social media: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Cheung_%28political_advisor%29?wprov=sfla1
This was in response to the White House calling Garcia a terrorist on their Twitter account.
Big Cheungus
I was ahead of the curve, and got banned in October 2024 for Promoting violence when I said "If a president decided to betray America's allies, and start directley helping Russia in its wars of conquest, America would probably end up with a dead president"
They basically told me to fuck off on my appeal, I had told them A) I wasnt threatening anything, and B) moderation is getting politically triggered and biased. and they permabanned me.
and I have since been Hardware banned from my main PC and my work PC, I still want to go back for some of the niche communities that havent emigrated over here yet, but I really cant be bothered to go and fire up a 8 year old laptop or something just for fucking reddit. its a cesspit and getting banned is largely a blessing in disguise.
That wont help, neither will a vpn or using a different device lol, I tried them all, think it has to be a different device youve never logged on before on a different network, i lost interest and just use lemmy now, reddit lowkey made me do stuff less, like id read more about my hobbies rather than doing them, like watching ppl game instead of gaming, but for any hobby
Thank you for informing me. I'll take a look in ten years if they are still around.
In any case, I knew I would be banned eventually regardless so I just did as much agitating as possible until that point came.
I use iOS and that didnt stop me from making another account after I got banned. I have four burner accounts.
Welcome to Lemmy, where the only people you can’t criticize safely are the Muslims and Chinese.
Why would you spam in this thread?
My Reddit account was permanently banned for saying I hope Nazi scum Elon Musk dies soon. Had previously caught temporary bans for saying things like "We should overthrow Musk into the sea." in response to him having argued King Charles should overthrow the UK government. Reddit admins really don't seem to like it when you're righteously intolerant of evil scumfuck psychopaths who use their unearned power and influence to cause immeasurable harm to society, the world and its inhabitants. Things like that break Rule 1, threatening violence, they claim.
Although the permanent ban was only for a couple of days since I for once was successful in my appeal. I basically said death =/= violence. An obvious truth to anyone, except some Reddit admins apparently.
I've not really used Reddit since. Kind of lost my will to bother with a US based site that's clearly and predictably going in a US direction, i.e. spiraling down the fascist sewage. Instead I've been drifting over to here. Will see what the moderation over here is like.
My first appeal was not really an appeal and more a question but they ignored every appeal after that, I evaded a subreddit ban (accidentally was scrolling on an alt) for the most lame subreddit and made the most boring pointless comment as I do, it was like 3 words instant ban
But yeah that shit made me genuinely hate the site, there is no way at all to get in contact with a human, no email, no phone, just that one short limited character appeal you can send once.
Prior to that I had a temp ban for reporting stuff and it was like mod abuse or something, insane, it was against the rules, but if republicans incite violence its okay if they encourage suicides or whatever its fine
It's tenous at best, probably would've been banned again anyways, since you account doesn't really clear in subreddit filtwrs
I knew a Reddit admin IRL for a year or so back in 2010 or so. I visited him in the hospital when he was diagnosed with leukemia. I got my marrow tested to try and be a donor for him, and that bitch still doesn't remember me.
I was permabanned without explanation and reinstated two weeks later, again without comment.
I believe this tracks with what to expect should we ever see the tech-bro billionaires divide the world into monarchy fiefdoms ocer which rhey are each the unchallenged lord and master.
the second you get flagged for ban evasion you are pretty much dead in the water. and you'll have to move on to drastic, expensive measures to get around it. like a new device and probably a new network
even if your ban reason was false, if you make a new account, as far as they're concerned thats grounds for a non-appeal permanent ban.
A shadowban was triggered by a simple comment removal and a completely new browsers, reddit wants all your browser info, they dislike if your using a browser fork too, besides only chrome or main ff
Feel that pain this year would have been my 10th year on Reddit. I was permanently banned last June for saying I hope the libs of TikTok monster would get hit by a bus. It’s still blows I can’t post or comment on anything. I was part of a close nit group on Reddit involving a car subreddit and now it sucks to see people commenting on where I am and what happened.
I tried to like Reddit but every time I tried posting something I thought was original or thoughtful it would get auto deleted by a bot for not including the right "flair" or some other stupid shit.
original or thoughtful
That's the problem, the powers that b have deemed it necessary that we only have 1 of 2 ideas.
Either you're loyal to conservatives, or loyal to neo-liberals. Anything else is cause for a ban, and there will be no cavalry to defend you since you're not loyal to either side.
I came from TikTok to Reddit about 2 years ago and after some initial adjustments I found the experience quite liberating in comparison. But yeah there are a lot of rules that you only find out about by getting deleted or downvoted. Lemmy is quite literally the essence of what makes Reddit interesting without the weird bs so this is an overdue transition anyway (although I miss optional user flairs ngl).
Lemmy is just small enough at this point where mods don't have to rely on automated tools and things like required flairs to effectively manage their community. As it develops, things like required flairs, verified submissions, etc will become more normal.
For example, I'm watching Wheel of Time, and /r/WoT requires you to flair every submission with a spoiler level (books only, show and book, show only, etc). Lemmy can't really sustain good discussion on that yet, but when it does mods will need to start aggressively removing submissions if they're not properly categorized.
This is why I tell people to dump pitchers of water on Reddit employees if you meet one at a bar in Frisco. Also rub shit on the HQ front doors handle. Make them extra pissed off.
I hope all their party favors are laced, sf tech bros prob goin to illenium
Don't miss Reddit. I got my 10 year account permanently banned for making a complaint about a mod who temp banned me for no perceivable reason.
Eat a sack of damp turds Reddit.
Reddit has streaks now??
For a second, I thought OP got banned from Duolingo.
I mean back when duolingo has discussions or what they called it, you might write nasty stuff. But now, imagine being banned for the wrong translation.
I haven't used duolingo for a few weeks because my hack to have infinite hearts broke again and I'm too lazy to put in the effort even tho it's not that difficult actually
Gamified social media with streaks and fomo notifications for daily scrolling or posting or whatever is hilariously bad and transparent.
Yep, they want you to login everyday FOR MULTIPLE YEARS
Well, I did that on my own to be honest. Not anymore, though, lol.
Wha... do you get some kind of reddit currency if you make a post that breaks 1000 upvotes, with a multiplier based on your log in streak length?
Jesus Christ, these fucking dark pattern, microtransaction shit just needs to be universally banned.
Yeah honestly a social media streak getting bigger is a sign I should probably take a day off.
They have a “basement dweller” achievement if you hit two years.
Oh, you can get banned here. It's not like this is like a place of free speech. It's just that the internet is kind of created little pockets of echo chambers. It is what it is. And like it was always going to be like that anyways. I just like it that it's not monetized by corporations that are bombing the shit out of children.
We should have all stayed on Usenet. It's decentralized and uncensored.
only place I've ever been banned from here was not paying attention to which "channel" I was in since I dont fully understand how Lemmy works, and I ended up posting a comment to a thread I saw come up on the main page of lemmy.world when it was actually a lemmy .ml link, and people over there, most of them dont take too kindly to you insulting their Russian overlords,
.ml by and large are too ignorant to recognize the Russians aren't their Socialist idols, they're just a Capitalist oligarchic mafia state. So you make one comment that is percieved as being targetting against the Putin regime and you're automatically assigned the label of a Pro Western NATOpill schill
But if any one instance pulls reddit stuff ppl will notice and can leave without losing the whole site and infrastructure
The idea behind lemmy (and every other decentralized platform) is not that you can't get banned. The idea is that f the mods of one instance decde to go crazy, are bought by malicious people, or if there is an hostile takover (like what happened to freenode), then the network isn't compromized, and ideally there are plenty of other instances with a moderation policy you agree with and where you can recreate an account
lemmy.world mods have already shown they're not interested in moderating fairly.
I jumped ship from that awful instance when they decided to block piracy communities.
Would love to see them fade into obscurity.
Only by the admin of your home instance, which is unlikely and normally comes after something very extreme (and can be mitigated by running your own instance, where you are in sole power over your account, so it cannot be banned globally)
But normally, you'll get banned by the community/certain other instance in very gruesome cases, but not your account.
Lemmy isn't much better. We still need communities that don't allow mod abuse.
If you get reported enough, the mods will censor or ban you even if you're not breaking any rules.
Oh this is me. Got banned from Reddit and am on lemmy fulltime.
I'm so glad to see lemmy.world so active.
I'd rather see lemmy.world shrink to irrelevance because their mods are just using it as a tool to push their agendas.
You might not be a pirate, but did you know they're censoring piracy communities from you? Not sure if you want to be a part of an instance whose mod team feels they get to make decisions like that for you.
Welcome, don't step in the Tankies on your way in.
Why do we keep those near the front door, anyway?
They offered to build the front door for free and now that it's done it's difficult to convince people to come in through a different door.
we keep moving them but when their toilets clog and overflow building mgmt moves them back.
I canceled my reddit pro, or reddit+ account, whatever the f*ck it is called, and the ads, the ads.... Ads that look like posts, or comments. It's almost making me 100% Lemmy too.
I kinda miss the ads with comments enabled but not to the point where I'd consider going back 😅
Lately I'm seeing a lot of this on old accounts
I had a few alt accounts from a decade ago that I'd sometimes used to get something from that site but over the past year the all got banned for no reason because I literally didn't even post with them.
Im guessing that Reddit wants to get rid of those older users that still remember how great it was
Yep, 11+ year Reddit user and I had never received a single ban save a few of those pre-emptive ones from overly zealous subreddits I'd never even interacted with. Then in the last 6 weeks I received escalating bans of 3 days, then 7, and just yesterday finally a permaban, without much change in my rhetoric. I've always been very hostile to fascists and conservatives on my account, and for 99% of my Reddit history that never got flagged at all. So fuck em, I'm not going to try and get back on, the Reddit of today is not the one I enjoyed using back in the 2010s.
They wantll Nu-reddit user, aka the ones that are ignorant of reddits history
Yeah I've been wondering if I actually got banned because I used old.reddit and a hacked Reddit mobile app.
Similar happened to me. You cannot say there is genocide going in Palestine. If u say that are temp banned for a day, then 3 day then permanently banned.
Israel has bots in reddit to gatekeep the narrative i believe they have taken over worldnews
There will still be an amount of censorship on lemmy, it might just be on the opposite opinion of yours, so you won’t notice it. I’m pretty sure we’re slowly turning into an echo chamber as well
Lemmy is definitely turning into an echo-chamber among the bigger instances.
It's okay, though. Once enough people get censored, it opens up the opportunity for people to start instances that don't abuse their mod power.
Absolutely! Especially communities instances like lemmy.ml. I just got banned for criticizing certain aspects of Communism. No alternate opinions are allowed apparently...
that's why if you disagree with censorship/moderation policy of an instance, you can move to another one. You can't do that on reddit.
The extreme political instances year, like hexbear , mil, grad are as bad as conservatives. Makes you wonder that they were justly banned from reddit as surely as they would if they step out of their instances
Just for posterity in case this follows us here, there is a genocide going on in Palestine. Feels like a mantra at this point.
Lmao yeah I guess there’s a lot of us here.
I doubt that very much.
And nothing of value was lost
What did you do?
Not op but I got perma banned for fighting with people who were defending massive pedophile Dr disrespect. They were arguing that "it was legal that means it's okay". I pointed out that the US is fucked and certain states have consent laws at 16. Legally he could fuck a 16 year old. However that doesn't change the fact that he's a pedophile scumbag regardless of legality.
I was then banned for "child sexual content" :)
I avoid YouTube/twitch drama like the plague, because you can't really tell if they support or criticize the streamers,
I pointed out that the US is fucked and certain states have consent laws at 16
Yeah, that's actually the average age worldwide
Not defending Dr Diddles, mind you, but the US is actually better than a lot of places thanks to having parts where it's 17 or 18 (and... Worse, depending on where you look)
Sounds right.
I got banned for commenting on a video of something like "guy loses it in van and runs down protestors" my comment was pointing out that they were running into the way of an already (slow) moving van and then leaping dramatically to the ground. It was like a grade school production of a Chinese insurance scam en masse.
Reddit has gotten so pathetic. Sad to see it fall so hard. If it was like this in 2012 I would have never signed up
I tend to think that 16yo is fine so idc, they do their things
However I still think Disrespect is a moron (for other reasons)
Going to get downvoted but I’m making my part by de-echo chamberifying lemmy
Well the sentence that initially got me a three day ban was "Hitler did nothing wrong" which I'm aware doesn't look good on paper but it was a quote and not my own words. According to Reddit the decision was automated so I appealed what I thought was an honest mistake and that's when they probably saw my recent posts promoting Lemmy and talking about Palestine and decided to ban me permanently. That or they didn't like that I filed an appeal. I haven't used Reddit nearly as much since getting on Lemmy anyway so this is more funny than annoying but still a weird way to go.
Not OP but I got banned on reddit atleast 4 times. Zero bans on Lemmy though.
All for supposed harassment usually after having a disagreement in certain subreddits. Honestly could be anything their report system seems easy to abuse
Now, I don't tend to have those on Lemmy nearly as much, but when the pedophile I was disagreeing with reported me here the mods were chill to hear my side after issuing me a warning.
For both the more chill atmosphere and the better mods I like more here.
Reddit used to be good enough to get people to post daily without cajoling
There it is. Their chatbots need more training data and reinforcement feedback.
Welcome to the club!!!
I still haven't been told I've been officially banned, they just give me server errors all the time (only on my main account, not when going on any other account/incogni)
You can check if your shadow banned by looking at your profile while not logged in. If it says suspended or can't find your profile, you were banned
Damn, reddit do be shadow banning
Maybe you got shadowbanned?
Apparently
Maybe they managed to corrupt your data.
"Whoops! We accidently corrupted your data and didn't have any alerts setup for when this happens hihi"
I wouldn't be surprised tbh
I just got banned myself for calling a moderator woke. F reddit
You sound like a conservative that doesn't know what your talking about, if it's based on sarcasm, but if it's based on bigotry, you had no place in reddit as surely in other forums. Nobody likes a obnoxious loudmouth
Agreed. It was mostly based on frustration on how the littlest comment now on Reddit gets you banned. My mistake for getting hot headed and calling him a name.
Woke is a compliment, though
Doesn’t sound great for you…
that Reddit mod
Dang, I called one an autistic dork and only got 3 days. Nothing against autistic people. I'm something of an autistic myself. I just knew it would trigger him. Then I mocked him in the unban request too for being a "thin-skinned bitch."
I've also said "I fully endorse Luigi and his slaughter of CEOs."
Why is it so hard for me to get my permaban?
You have to be nice to someone they don't like.
Hahahhahahah
Uh oh, did you suggest something that isn't aligned with corporate status quo enforcement?
Exact reason why I'm here lol.
They kept sending me emails with cutesie aliens in them after they shadowbanned me. Very weird company
I'm permabanned and they're still sending me stuff. Read the room Reddit, you ended things not me.
Shadowbanning is a tool of the demiurge
