Wasn’t as painful for the general population as this. He is more destructive in ways that directly affect the majority this time. He can’t coast off the democratic economy with these moves. Republicans actually care when things affect them.

People were voting against Dems for inflation that was largely from summer of 2022. Bear markets/recessions usually last 15 months.
If Trump keeps this stupid shit up for more than a week, the Republicans will have a bloodbath. Look no further than the elections of 1890.

I think at this point we're will have recession, even if trump reverts those tariffs.
He created so much uncertainty that people won't suddenly forget everything and resume shopping like nothing happened.

You forgot the part where foreign governments, corporations, and consumers actively divert trillions of dollars of revenue and investments away from the US.
Removing the tariffs won't remove the distrust or risk, and if the US is somehow able to have legitimate elections again, removing Trump won't either. The world now considers a significant portion of the American populace mentally-ill. It would take generations to fix that damage, if ever.

We’re heading for a caps-lock DEPRESSION that’ll probably be worse than the 1930s, because the world is likely going to move away from the USD standard as a result of this, all of the trade alliances we’ve built for over a goddamn CENTURY are being shattered as we speak, and we have a whole hell of a lot further to fall than we did compared to the 1920s and 30s in terms of standard of living. I would not be surprised if this ends in the balkanization of the US. For fucks sake, countries are starting to reconsider buying shit from our military industrial complex - say what you will about the corruption and waste, but we do make a lot of the best military hardware in the world right now. And that has implications for our own military as well, because the economy of scale is probably going to completely evaporate sooner or later.

Yea thats the funny conversation on Bloomberg from last week. Do we hit the -10% contraction in GDP before we get 2 quarters of negative growth? We shall see. Hopefully people remove their politicians before the elections or inspire them to unfuck the global economy.

We already can't economically build ships for the navy because we've so dramatically hollowed out our steel refining and commercial ship-building industries. We're looking at a future where the US military is primarily a client of the international arms industry for everything but guns.

I'm in a red district in SoCal and my mom, a disability rights advocate and civil rights lawyer, tried to run for office a few times over the last couple of decades. Each time the only thing any of the Democratic Party reps we talked to cared about was how many rich people we knew and how many donations we could gather. Once they recognized she didn't have connections to money, all support was pulled.
Not to say that people shouldn't try. But not only do you need the time and ability to run for office, unless you have a LOT of money it's very difficult to even get a foot in the door.
