Movie Theaters Wait for Comeback as Screens Shut Down
in my country the price to watch a movie (no popcorn, or other extras) exploded and never really came back down.
its kind of cool and all but it isnt worth it to pay more than 100 bucks between me and my partner, when we have a tv and piracy at the comfort of our own home.
Where on earth do you live that the cost of a movie ticket is over $50
south america. we don't spend in dollars, but we also don't earn in dollars so its probably just as expensive as you are thinking.
ill be fair: there are cheaper alternatives but they are further away and inconvenient. ill note though that before the pandemic we had tickets for 25-30 bucks and even less.
Then the box offices shouldn't have played so fast and loose with investor cash over the past 5 years manipulating its stock price. I used to love going to the movies, not so much anymore, too expensive, dirty and the food options have gotten worse. If I wanted cheap carnival food, ill just go and have a corn dog there next to a waste barrel full of vomit instead of sticky floors and weird smelling chairs in a dark dirty theater.
The pandemic really reiterated how disgusting and inconsiderate people can be. I don’t want to share already questionable space with them while I’m supposed to be enjoying a film.
Add to everything that people said here the fact that most movies are basically shit
My guess is that this is because, honestly, there haven't been all that many great movies coming out as of late.
Our city added a B&B theater and I'd probably go to it if they offered a subscription service that competed with AMC's A List. I love that they have stuff like pickleball and arcade games. I remember the AMC I used to go to had arcade games, pinball, air hockey, and I think even a pool table somewhere. I still go to that AMC nearly twenty years later and they have maybe a few claw machines and the theater is much more run down than it used to be overall.
I think at some point, it may just become untenable for these giant 10-25 screen multiplexes to continue and the theater industry will revert back to smaller 1-5 screen theaters with bars and/or additional entertainment in the front area.
I'll also add that I don't think the endless dooming about how there are no good movies is actually true. I go to 75+ movies in the theater a year and I'd say 90% of the ones I see are at least decent. There's always gonna be some stinkers out there though.
If movie theaters installed electric car chargers and made a package deal for movies and charging they would have plenty of customers.
The last movie I saw in theaters was Godzilla x Kong, the next will be Superman. Not interested in paying $50 to see anything else.
If they want a post-pandemic comeback they have to wait for the pandemic to finish first...
