U.S. should absolutely have free healthcare. We're a disgrace to many countries around the globe that offer it at a fraction of the cost this country spends.
And fuck healthcare becoming more and more close to being monopolized. All these big, for-profit (somehow they manage to claim and get away with claiming that they're not for profit, but really...) companies taking over all of the hospitals. You can hardly avoid a Christian hospital here in Seattle these days. Seattle! Aren't we supposed to be like the progressive bastion? But almost all of our hospitals are now Christian, which means good luck getting any abortion care there.
And when these bigger companies buy out the smaller ones, they squeeze the doctors and the nurses for all they are worth. Resulting in terrible outcomes and worse pay for staff and worse outcomes for patients who are being seen by overworked, underpaid staff.
Healthcare in this country is a dystopian nightmare and only getting worse over time.
I work for the biggest healthcare conglomerate in Boston. They earn billions. So, must spend it. Massachusetts General is currently building two new high rises at over $2B.
FYI, america spends about about double on healthcare than other developed nations. America spends about $9K on healthcare per capita, and most other developed nations spend abotu $3K-4K
These non-profits like Kaiser Permanente and the Cleveland Clinic need to be seized by the government for failing to be truly non-profit and turned into universal healthcare.
