  • For those who don't know KDE Connect yet, KDE Connect is such a beautiful software and app with many useful features and possibilities. I strongly recommend it if you have two or more devices that you need to use interchangeably. I use it to inter-connect both of my laptops (both Arch, by the way) with both of my Android smartphones. It allows me, for example, to monitor battery charging of one smartphone through the other smartphone (so I can keep it laying still, steadily charging, without disturbing the charging process, as the current state of my USB cable is not as good). Clipboard sharing is something I became so accustomed to use that when KDE Connect isn't connected for some reason (for example, when the phone is connected through mobile network, therefore, not being on the same LAN network as my laptops), the lack of a unified clipboard feels strange to me.

  • @kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social This blog post is about iPhone support but Microsoft has had this in Windows for a couple years now, especially in cooperation with Samsung. The Apple/Samsung #Sidecar feature in which you can use your computer keyboard to write on your phone or to drag & drop files is still not present in #KDEConnect (there is a input module in the plasmoid setting but I have never seen a button to actually use this; is this Wayland-only?).

      You can drag & drop files on the popup from the KDE Connect tray icon to send to the phone.

      The popup opens either when clicking on the tray icon or when hovering over it while dragging a file.

      Keyboard to phone needs to be setup on the phone.
      When you open the app at the bottom it lists plugins that need permission to work.
      Follow the setup for "Receive remote keypresses" to add KDE Connect as an input method.

      Whenever KDE Connect is active as a keyboard, an input box appears in the KDE Connect popup on the desktop for you to type in.

      I'm pretty sure it's not wayland only. I can't see why it would be.

      Long press the spacebar on the keyboard on your phone and chose the KDE Connect keyboard (see first picture).

      Then click on the KDE Connect plasmoid on your desktop, click in the text box (see second picture) and start typing.

      You can also use your phone and KDE Connect as a mouse and keyboard for your desktop.

  • @kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social I am really lucky to view and reply to my SMS from my Android phone using KDE Connect and also to control the media with it.

    My only issue comes with basic MTP support - for for reliable file transfer I need to use tools like "AndroidFileTransfer" or run a Windows WM where I could work with my phone similarly to a flash drive. That is quite sad - not sure what is the reason for that poor implementation of MTP in linux...

      Use KDE Connect:

      On your phone, go into wher you keep your files (say, your photo gallery). Select the ones you want to transfer (1). Tap the share button (2), and the devices paired with your phone will show up (3). Tap the computer you want to send your files to and they will show up in the "Downloads" directory of that machine a few seconds later (depending on their size, of course).

      It works both ways, also from laptop to phone, and even between phones and computers.

But native MTP implementation for Dolphin would be great - I remember it used to work sometimes and for some phones but no more now... Would be useful for organizing files / folders and copying between computer and phone.

    A blog about them bragging to be rolling out the ability to SHARE FILES WITH YOUR PHONE to Windows "insiders"...

    I'm reminded of a guy in HS who wanted to fight me so dared me to punch him and then started hitting himself in the face to prove it didn't hurt. I said he was doing fine and walked away...

    I haven't used Windows seriously in almost a decade. I just assumed ...
