He should have got Best Director for Alien and Blade Runner.
He isn't going to win one any time soon on his current form - he's not doing great work raking over the ashes of his past successes and his original films have flatlined. Going by recent films he could do well with a two Hour film that is one long battle with no human drama to mess it up for him.
Too bad Gladiator 2 was a bunch of bizarre logical lapses so that certain plot points can happen. Also such bad CGI these days. Really pales in comparison to the original.
