Why are cassette and CD players so bulky now?

Was rather interesting to learn that some of the core components of cassette players are only manufactured by a single producer. There's a similar situation with a lot of common devices, like microwave ovens, where they're effectively all the same on the inside because they're all sourcing the same part from one manufacturer.
