It's kind of silly, but it makes me happy to discover that I'm not the only one that gets all protective and paternal when a new player crosses my path.
I am sure you are far from the only one. There are many people that I saw specifically say that they were going to welcome all of the new people coming into the hobby.
I made this meme partly because there are some people out there who feel differently, and I wanted to specifically called out the site for being so friendly.
Several months ago, I saw an article in an unnamed sub that basically said the gatekeeping was good. Because if we just let anybody play this game that we love, it will change.
In the post actually said, remember not to cast your pearls before swine.
🧐
No, everybody on the thread disagreed with the person and they got downvoted to Hell .
But I can’t imagine anybody on this site saying anything like that.
Because, of course, the games that we love will change if new people play them.
And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, Speak to us of Children.
And he said:
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.
Thank you so much. I have to say I consider that the bare minimum for a meme maker.
Especially when it’s something like a cartoon somebody you know put effort into that and I’m just modifying it for comedy so I definitely wanna make sure people know about the original.
… I don’t always do it for things like backgrounds and that’s fucked up of me because they took somebody hard work too but I guess maybe I’m just biased toward pictorial art but I’m gonna try to credit my backgrounds.
By the way, I’m sure most people know about this, but I recently discovered a whole trove of open pixel art!
The artist continued these characters! I think it might be in Patreon only or something, but there’s at least one the little dude is actually a Hydromancer. I don’t know if it’s an original property or based on a video game, but I just wanted to mention.
Aww!
Thank you so much for your compliment and I’m glad it resonated with you.
I understand critical role is on campaign three what’s your favorite?
And you have a character class that you long to play next time?
I just want to mention one of the reasons why I made this meme is that oh wow how about 20 years ago my first gaming group that I still talk to to this day and call my brothers.
They were is different from me. It’s night and day. I’m gay they were at the time thinking they were all straight.
I didn’t drink they were huge drinkers, I had only experimented with weed. They were professionals.
And the biggest difference was I was autistic and they weren’t.
My Therapist says that they were the source of my positive masculinity images. That basically, they helped teach me to be a real boy. to be my kind of man. I kind gentle person who’s ready to protect those who need it.
I told them that a few months ago and one of my friends said we never thought of you as weird or awkward. You were just a sweet, funny friend who we fell in love with right away.
My friend, I hope you make lifelong friends with your gamer group.
That's a fantastic story, and it's one of the reasons I also fell in love with everything - the community feels very welcoming. I hear the other stories of problematic players (and I watched all of C1 of CR so I did see a bit in Orion), so I know it's not all roses but it really seems like most people try to be very accepting. It's really great that it was such a positive influence on you.
For CR, I still think C2 is my favorite, but C3 is getting pretty damn crazy right now so tough to say. All of them have been pretty great.
For D20, also very difficult although I think the funniest, and therefore my recommendation for noobs, have been Starstruck, the Seven, and Escape from Bloodkeep. Fantasy High is straight gold also.
So far I've played a stars druid and now I'm multi classing fighter/wiz (only level 3 tho so not very far in). I'm def trying to play a pally and a bard next, but eventually want to try basically everything lol.
