WWII started out as the Conservative World War to see who was the more extreme Conservative. The United States showed up with a Liberal and of course, Russia was Communist.
I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with Conservatives. It gives a little breathing time between progress for people to get used to change. I think the problem is Regressives brand themselves as Conservatives. Regressive policies are the real problem.
I think there's room for both "We should throw out everything and build anew" and "We should reform the current system to remove injustice and inefficiency." But I guess similar to what you said, we have a lot of people who want neither of those. They want to hurt their outgroups (typically women and minorities).
