  Imo it's more just well meaning naivety that's nested in unquestioned smug first worldism and idealist thought that if socialism is made acceptable to enough liberals then socialism can just happen, disregarding any materialist analysis of how socialism actually comes about

  It's pretty wild that few movements to throw off the chains of imperialism also involve getting rid of imperialist gender and sexual norms.
  
  I think it’s a coping mechanism. They lack the power to either quell the rise of the far right or to make their own milquetoast liberal parties actually do anything meaningful about it, so banning “tankies” from their spaces gives them the feeling of defending “democracy,” never mind the insignificant weight so-called “tankies” have on the current political economy.
  
  Agreed. "Tankies" is like, idk, what would you guess? Maybe a handful of tens of thousands of people in the US, a little more in Europe just because there are more people with direct experience of Communism there? There's literally one communist in government in the entire US that I'm aware of, the SALT lady in Seattle, and that's it. But all the left adjacent and left wannabe spaces won't shut up about us like we're poised to swing in and start forcing everyone to live in public housing any second.

  Or politically illiterate enough that it doesn't matter. There were some genuinely anti-fascist libs back in the 30s (didn't turn out well) but I don't see any of that these days. The libs call the GOP fascists but don't seem to have any interest in neutralizing them politically, or even being aware that's an option.
  Like with "RuZZia" they only bring up alleged Nazis in response to comments about Fascism in Ukraine, and it's always just a deflection. They never say anything like "Well we should round up and shoot all the fascists in Wagner". To them it's just a way to create an equivalence so they don't have to answer for or defend the Ukrainian Fascists.
  A lot of rank and file libs do tick a lot of the Fascism boxes, but they usually miss some key ones like blaming everything on a conspiracy (though they sometimes do that) or looking to return to a fictitious golden age. Economically it's less questionable - Neoliberal economics have a great deal of commonality with Fascist economics.
