- On Saturday, Oct. 14, Longmont will experience an 80 % annular solar eclipsesolarsystem.nasa.gov Where & When | 2023 Annular Eclipse – NASA Solar System Exploration
The Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, annular solar eclipse will cross North, Central, and South America. It will be visible in parts of the United States, Mexico, and many countries in South and Central America.
Just in case there are others like myself who rarely check reddit any more, I thought it would be helpful to cross-post this. It won't look like much unless you have the solar eclipse glasses, but I plan to break out my tracker and camera (with solar filters!) to try and get some pics.
- Longmont welcomes the Butterfly Pavilion, a new public art installation inspired by Mexican culturewww.timescall.com Longmont welcomes the Butterfly Pavilion, a new public art installation inspired by Mexican culture
The Butterfly Pavilion, a new public art installation in Longmont, celebrates over 25 years of partnership between the cities of Longmont and Ciudad Guzmán, Mexico.
The Butterfly Pavilion, a new public art installation in Longmont, celebrates over 25 years of partnership between the cities of Longmont and Ciudad Guzmán, Mexico, through the Longmont Sister Cities Association.
The 12-foot pavilion in Flanders Park is colored in vibrant blues, reds and yellows and gives visitors a full view of nearby McIntosh Lake. Guests who sit on its covered benches can look up to see monarch butterflies made of hand-forged steel perched across the roof, as if ready to take flight at any moment.

(Matthew Jonas – Staff Photographer) “To me, butterflies are a wonderful symbol of growth and transformation,” said Jodie Bliss, the artist who created the pavilion. “I think that the idea of crossing borders and the evolution that happens when we travel is really well-represented in the form of the butterfly.”
On Friday, the city held a ceremony at the park, 2115 N. Shore Drive, to welcome “El Pabellón de las Mariposas” into the Longmont community and thank Bliss for her work.
“In this expansive setting, this pavilion exemplifies the importance of bridging cultures and countries,” , Longmont Art in Public Places commission member Susan Horowitz said to dozens of guests Friday afternoon.
Bliss, a Monument resident, was inspired by the buildings and culture of Ciudad Guzmán that she researched for the project. The colors, she said, are reminiscent of Mexican folk art, and the pavilion’s arches invoke those from a cathedral in the city.

(Matthew Jonas – Staff Photographer) The pavilion’s roof holds a metal sphere that can be seen both outside and inside the structure. Outside, Bliss explained, the sphere reflects the sky and nature; inside, it is meant to make visitors, especially exchange students who come to Longmont from Ciudad Guzmán and visit the installation, consider their relationships with other people.
“When the students are visiting — if they’re gathering here and enjoying each other — they get to see themselves with the people around them,” Bliss said.
LSCA president Janice Rebhan explained the idea for the pavilion came from a desire to create a monument that represented the city’s longstanding relationship with Ciudad Guzmán. The Mexican city is the second to become a sister city after Chino, Japan, over 30 years ago.
“The mission of Sister Cities is to promote peace one friendship at a time,” Rebhan said. “…These friendships last for a long time.”
Both Longmont and Ciudad Guzmán exchange students attended the ceremony and were joined by Marisol Mendoza Pinto, a government representative of the Mexican city.
“Longmont for us is an ally in growth, culture and friendship,” Mendoza Pinto said through a translator. “When a person from (Ciudad Guzmán) comes here, we feel at home.”
Longmont mayor Joan Peck officially dedicated the pavilion to the past, present and future residents of both Longmont and Ciudad Guzmán.
“May this space of gathering be full of peace, joy and enlightenment,” Peck said. “May it stand to celebrate many years of successful student exchange, cultural understanding … and the power of people-to-people citizen diplomacy.”

Welcome to /c/Longmont.
With all of the recent drama around Reddit, this community was started as an alternate to the /r/Longmont community on Reddit.
The community here is much smaller, and we need your help for it to grow. Feel free to cross-post (or, repost) content here so we can build up a good history of content in the event that Reddit (completely) falls apart.
- Anyone else getting vehicle damage from all the potholes?
Usually we see some potholes at the end of the snow season which get repaired fairly quickly... but this year... oh boy. Seems like they didn't start showing up until all the rain hit, and then they were everywhere, and so far I've seen very few getting fixed (and some that were fixed have opened up again).
My SUV has been pulling hard to the right the last few weeks. I finally got a chance to jack it up today, checked the wheel bearings and A-frames as the common culprits. Instead what I found is the lower A-frame has actually been pulled over on one side by nearly 1/2". I moved it back to roughly where it's supposed to be so I'm not tearing up my tire until I can get in for a proper alignment, but sheesh, could we maybe get some crews out to start patching the worst of the potholes at least? Usually our fair city is so quick on getting these things fixed!

- Just a reminder, if you can't see a community from your lemmy instance
Like Mastodon, Lemmy is a federated group of servers, however in order for a server (also known as an 'instance') to be aware of content from another instance, someone has to let that server know the community exists...
In my case, my home is on mander.xyz. If I go to the communities tab and search for Longmont, nothing comes up. From the post on reddit I knew that the home of this group is at "https://lemmy.ml/c/longmont" so I simply put that whole string in the community search, and that tells my server of its existence. Then I can immediately go back and search for "Longmont" again, and now the group shows up and allows me to subscribe to it.
And of course this works for any other communities you are interested in, but which aren't hosted on the Lemmy server you have an account with. Once you or someone else on your server has subscribed to a community, anyone else on your server will also now immediately see that community without needing the full path.
