- Looking for outdoor camera I can access when I'm away from home.
Don't have much technical background so was looking to pick up whatever options were on Amazon, and not keeping it indoors since aware that the company I choose could decide to spy on me. But, I don't really care for outside the house.
Question is if having these type of devices running on the same wifi network I'm using is safe for my other devices? And does running that device on the guest wifi help?
- I feel hopeless...
Every day I feel like the world will colapse. No freedom of expression. Companies want to control each aspect of our lives. This hit me really hard: https://github.com/RupertBenWiser/Web-Environment-Integrity I want to believe that people will wake up and stand up against this, but it won't happen because of cource fomo will hit and addiction keeps people on board.
I don't want to rely on discord, meta, microsoft and google...
Nobody from the mainstream cares about freedom as long as they get their fix.
Not to mention how the environment suffers from this...
Only God can save us...
- I've decided to pick up trash picking as a hobby
Every time I walk outside I try to remember to bring a plastic bag with me so I can pick up whatever piece of trash I see on the ground. It's a bit of a double-edged sword really, while it's nice to take care of the earth around you it's also quite sad to see just how much trash is around you at all times. Thankfully it ends up being nice in the end because I now see less and less litter around on my usual routes. Keeping in mind that some is enough (I don't need to pick up every little piece esp if I'm on my way to someplace like work) and that what's small to you means the world to the plants, insects, and whatever animal that may be in that area does help with this hobby as well
I'm hoping to do more volunteer work and bigger actions for helping the local area at some point in the near future but for now this is a good habit to have
- What is the image upload size limit?
Is there an easy way to see file types and size limits? Thank you!
- is there a browser extensions that blocks news sites with AI generated articles ?
You know the types of sites that I'm talking about. You start reading for a bit and it just starts repeating itself. Everytime it feels like I just wasted my time and I need to search for another, hopefully not ai generated, article. So is there a way to block them all ? Like an adblocker but for AI generated news sites ?
- Looking for a YT channel where I can watch makers build their projects
Hey y'all. I'm new to these parts and am really settling into Lemmy. I am looking for YouTube channels I can have playing in the background while I work from home. I benefit from body doubling so watching someone else work keeps me focused while I work alone. I'm looking for content creators that record their builds in a workshop without much dialogue. Fly on the wall type stuff.
Thanks in advance!
- I wish there was a bot that joined new communities automatically on some of the major instances, so comments would be available to see from the get go for people who subscribe
Would help with finding new communities, and not having to do the URL search thing before subscribing to something new
- Anyone else confused about the point of Lemmit.online?
From what I can gather, a bot creates communities based on subreddits recommended to them by users, then fills said communities with posts from Reddit. I don't really get the point of this, as 90% of posts it seems are just copied from Reddit but without any of the actual engagement, as the OP didn't post it and no one is commenting. It just seems like clutter and a waste of space, but it's also all over my feed. Anyone else confused?
- new thunder alpha release
Yep, Thunder is totally my new lemmy app of choice. Post mark as read has been added and that was my final delay to usingit full time.

- Youtube Ads are getting too frequent..
[[[ Solved - Using FreeTube for now ]]]
It seems youtube is breaking into the middle of long-form video much more often. And most of the ads are for snake oil - Fear mongering "Tinnitus will KILL your brain in three years" baloney.
Is there a Fediverse equivalent to YouTube? Can the Fediverse be applied to this? Will it solve the above complaint?
I have been to Odysee but with very few exceptions none of the content I want is there (They have Veritasium, and minute Physics, but not Vsause, Technology Connections, or Stand Up Maths)
- Does anyone use imgchest?
I came across it when I was looking for an alternative to imgur back when imgur wasn't playing nice with uBlock Origin on mobile for a while.
I know imgbb is more privacy oriented, but in my experience imgchest is easier to navigate, especially on mobile.
I'm not promoting the site, just curious if anyone else has tried it since I rarely see images linked from there, and if not what's your favorite alternative to imgur?
I've been thinking about this because I'm trying to avoid uploading images directly to the server here.
- With many instances holding off until bugs are ironed out with the Lemmy update, Jerboa is not playing nice. YSK, I found Connect for Lemmy as an alternative. (actually it won't let me post 🤨)
I know many instances are not upgrading until the majority of bugs and issues are resolved. In the meantime if Jerboa got upgraded (it looks nice, BTW) then it won't play nice with the older versions of Lemmy. On Saturday I discovered Connect for Lemmy inside the Google Play Store.
I figured for us who need something to read on our phones while we poop, this would be good until our instance gets updated.
Whoops. Just discovered I'm having issues posting or commenting with Connect while in my instance. I'm guessing you do have to log into an instance that's upgraded or view everything in a browser. Bummer.
- Did you know there’s no emoji for the cool S? Please add your name to this petition for change
I was outraged to discover this lack of emoji support for cool S
- electric bill total ripoff
My local electric provider offers a power plan called flatbill where they will give you the same price for a whole year. Seems great right? Not so much. They offered me a monthly rate of $154 which i knew right away was way overpriced as i almost always pay more than what i owe to build up a credit in case something comes up and i cant pay it. So i keep a very sharp eye on my usage. I did the math and found out that my average power bill over the last year was $113 per month. I always pay $130 to build the credit and they wanted to charge me $154. Na, im good. I will handle it myself.
- let's discuss "karma"
I am curious to hear opinions on the concept of user karma in general.
Do people miss it? Are we better off without it?
From a technicial perspective, I don't see why it couldn't be implemented. I understand Lemmy doesn't track this explicitly. However, using a users post and comment history you could come to a number pretty easily, right? I was considering making a toy app that would take a user and instance and spit out a karma score for post and comments, what would stop others from doing the same?
Will it be inevitably pulled into existence by Lemmy users as we mature the platform?
- It's Thursday. What are people planning to do this weekend?
It's yard work and the zoo for me. I hope all within the communities have a great weekend. Go socialize with those you care about. Peace.
- Share your latest hobbies!
Starting doing something you've never done before? Getting back into something you used to do? Is it fun and exciting? Is it challenging?
I recently starting to learn roller skating (quad skating). It is so thrilling! I can't do a lot yet, I can barely stop, can't skate backwards, and definitely no transitions. I can skate forward, scissor, scooter push, and I am getting tight with turns.
I take classes on the weekends, which are an hour, and then I skate 3 more hours in the regular session.
I am inching my way through the fundamentals, and I am not falling as often as I did just a week ago. I am wearing a helmet, because I care about my head, but I have become comfortable enough to take it off since it is not required, just wrist guards.
I own my own skates, Riedell R3s with Sonar Caymans (indoors), and Sketchers 4 Wheelers (outdoors), which I modified by replacing the plastic plates and trucks with Sure-Grip Super X. Now they are not so scary.
ALSO! I just got my first skate board! I walked into a local skate shop I had no idea existed until someone mentioned it, and only went in to see what offerings they had for roller skates so I would not have to order online. They got wheels and bearings, plus tools and protective gear, which is all I need and expected.
I walked out with an 8.5 Real deck (recycled), Ventura trucks, Slime Balls 78a wheels, Bones Reds bearings, and black tape. Assembly was free in-house and the dude got it together under 10.
I have yet to ride it, but I learned there is a skate park near me, so I have a lot to look forward to!
Edit: fixed details
- Is there any random deleted content from Reddit you'd like to share here after doing a wipe of your account? Memes are fun too.
Here's one comment I deleted it, but a few people found it useful
Issue was:
https://web.archive.org/web/20230308190437/https:/old.reddit.com/r/OLED_Gaming/comments/wbwgwy/hdmi_21_issue_with_sony_a80j_and_rtx_3080_ti/
HDMI 2.1 issue with Sony A80J and RTX 3080 TI >Purchased a 55 inch Sony A80J from costco for 4k PC gaming with my new Zotac Trinity OC 3080 TI. > >Problem is that none of the HDMI ports (both 2.0 and 2.1) worth with the PC. I do see an input, but it's heavily distorted with pink and green lines/sections and black jittery areas... can't use my mouse or my keyboard.
One possible solution I suggested was:
>I experienced this issue on the X90J with the unresponsive green lines and frozen screen. It seemed to be triggered after watching dolby vision content from the Amazon app one day. What fixed it was switching to a hdmi signal where things were normal, which for me was setting hdmi to VRR (standard, dolby and enhanced had the green frozen screen) and then triggering HDR in windows. Like toggling on and off Windows HDR. After that things went back to normal. > >I use a fiber HDMI 2.1 cable, so it seemed to be more a Sony software problem that required a random fix.

Looks nice so far. I got it from IzzyOnDroid's repo by searching "lemmy" in Droid-ify
Edit: oh yeah, i am really liking what i see. Refreshing gives haptic feedback and so do the toggle switches in settings.
- confession
I can't hold this back any longer.
I joined lemmy.one mostly because I thought the name beehaw was kinda stupid.
- [NOT COMPLAINT] 503 error
I just had a 503 error for the first time! I never thought I could get so excited about getting such a thing. Usually, I would be angry, but I'm not because this means people do flow in. This made me remember the old days of the Internet. Ah, to feel young again...
"The giants' blood, a sacred elixir of untold vitality, transforms barren soil into a tapestry of enchanted life."
- Are you doing your part?
I see many communities that got started in the last ten days. Sadly, some that I'm most interested in are not that active. Some are not active at all.
What are you doing to help your community? How do you go from lurking to contributing? Spreading the word?
Also, what's for breakfast?
- Microwave Madness = Appliance Advice needed
#Solved
Our microwave has just begun to show a failure mode. With no settings on the timer/modes when we close the door we hear a 60-cycle hum.
We put a coffee cup with water in and closed the door but did not push any button and noted the hum. The water got warm, for the exposure of 20 to 30 seconds, the water got the expected level of warmth we think.
Is there any danger if we leave the door open? (No hum with the door open)
Could the Magnatron be running at a higher output than it is supposed to when the door is closed but the microwave is not under the control of its built-in circuitry?
Of course, there is no danger of the microwave doing anything other than heating stuff (No mad science going on)? We know that microwave ovens work by making the water molecules vibrate faster.
- Share images from Pixelfed?
I saw somewhere that, instead of attaching images directly to Lemmy posts, you should instead post them to a Pixelfed instance and link to it. If a lot of people did that, it should reduce the load on Lemmy instances. I made a Pixelfed account so I could do that, but I don't like that people have to click through to see the image. For some ridiculous reason I kinda thought the image would show without having to do that lol. Are those the only two possible options, or am I missing something?
- How’s it going in the .one?
It’s been an interesting 10-ish days on the internet in general. Big thanks to @jonah@lemmy.one for hosting Lemmy.one. It’s a cool community, and I’m really enjoying the fediverse thus far. Looking forward to seeing how it develops!
- We Need Downvotes on Lemmy.one
Really loving the new experiences here on Lemmy.one. But I’m seeing many subs with off-topic posts. Community downvotes will help overworked mods find and remove such posts. I understand no one likes to be downvoted but it’s a necessary tool for our community and only helps users understand and refine what and where they are to be posting their content.
- What’s With The Wacky List Refreshing
Sorry if this is not the right sub to be posting this question.
I'm experiencing weird refreshing behavior when browsing posts. I could be in the middle of looking at a picture or reading a post in the list and all of a sudden the page moves all over the place, and refreshes with new posts. If I had expanded picture, it closes the picture and resorts that post somewhere else in the list. It's almost behaving like live update sorting in Reddit comments. It's very jarring. More recently I had tapped on a post to read it further, started to write a reply, and the refresh happened on the post and the text I was typing was still in the reply box, but it was to some other post.
- Free Talk Friday
Cutting down the frequency of these a bit, think I'll aim for a few times a week.
Happy Friday!!
- Is it possible to subscribe to kbin instances or whatever they're called from Lemmy?
I follow mma and see they have a community on kbin. Can I somehow subscribe to it from lemmy.one?
- Solo trip to Vietnam in a week
Just got my visa approved, im so excited. Never done a solo trip before so this will hopefully be something completely different. Also, never been this far away when traveling without my family. Been googling a lot about Vietnam and what you can do and it seems like a really interesting country. AHH can’t wait
(made this in beehaw first, but since they defederated i decided to post it somewhere else)
- How do comments federate?
I notice on some posts I look at them through my instance and see less comments than if I go to the page on the instance of the post. Is this expected? I never really quite understood how it works but makes me wonder how much I’m seeing
- First time I feel completely chill with talking on social media (thank you Lemmy)
I'm sure it's not going to last forever as this site grows in popularity but I feel like I can talk about whatever with minimal judgement here (and just overall no anxiety in comparison to everywhere else), just nice vibes all around ^^
- Thank you, Lemmy! (Redditor refugee)
I feel like part of a mass breakup, where you sleep over a friend’s house and won’t/can’t stop talking about your ex. Everything you hate but will also miss. And then complaining because your friend doesn’t have the right kind of coffee. 🙂
- It's Thursday! What's everyone's weekend plans?
Mine will depend if my wife's girl's weekend happens. If it does then I'm doing an art trail, which she would hate.
- No matter how hard I try I can't sub to a community...
I've spent the last hour trying to subscribe to !technology@beehaw.org
The logical thing would be a subscribe button on the community page. That's not there. So I did some digging and apparently you're supposed to paste the community name into search.
I tried that. Initially it just brought up a list of posts that mention that community. I then tried to choose "communities" as a filter and it brought up nothing.
Would someone please tell me what I'm missing? Why is this so hard?
EDIT: Nevermind. It's in the sidebar which I missed because I'm on mobile. 🤦♂️
- When you reload the page and there's not new posts? that's the size of our community.
Just be good to each other here. We have a chance to grow organically, let's do it! Let's figure out how to on board new people and make that transition to the fediverse a positive experience!
I know I sound like Chris Teager but it works.
