One Issue 'Christian' Voters
  • So then animal sacrifice is meant to be continued by Christians? The "did not come to abolish but fulfill" thing is really an explanation for abolishment. He didn't destroy the law but completed it, so it's done. And by law we basically mean Leviticus. So yes, Leviticus pretty much is irrelevant. By your argument and the argument embedded in OPs post Christians should still be stoning women and not eating pork.

How can you know which chapter of Matthew starts the sermon on the mount and not know pretty much the most core concept in Christian theology? Like that is almost the whole central point of Jesus is that he abolished the law by fulfilling it. That and salvation. That's like the two things.

  • We're doing another large poll for Saturday's movie night

These larger polls do seem to get better results. I hope you all can also make it on Saturday.

Onion in shame at what reality produces...
  • Exactly. And you aren't a terrorist after you win your country back. That's like the British partnering with America to fight terrorism being ironic because of George Washington. Different era is different era. Whether people like it or not the Taliban run an actual government.

  • A conservative billionaire had some things to say
  • There is no such thing as a politician who is a good person. People get into politics because their appetite for corruption strengthens like a drug user. This is true of pretty much every person who has ever run for president or has been president.

  • Lemmy votes ARE public, should they be anonymous?
  • It sounds like everyone but mods should be able to see voters. But of course they will use straw accounts. What if only votes on your own post/comment were revealed to you? Like some pointed out, they are already not anonymous to anyone who wants to try hard enough to get the data because of federation. So the question is who do we want to be able to see that data easily? It's a GUI modification in any case. Who are we making the gui modification for?

  • Never again
  • It's true. That box has the utility of the highest utility cable in it. Which means it's a lot. Worth taking up space under a bed you aren't using. Anti-horder culture goes too far. It's more complicated than dogmatically throwing away everything or keeping everything. Don't throw away things with real utility. Civilization is built on accumulated utility in durable goods.

  • Password length requirement
  • Ok. Take up to 65,536 bytes of utf8 string. Or better yet. Accept any password length. I mean any. But instead of transmitting it you bcyrpt on their machine and then use the resulting key to hmac sign a recent timestamp that can't be reused.

  • Lemmy devs are considering making all votes public - have your say
  • For this user base it is the right answer. So many petty downvoters. On my site I'm considering a rule that would make it so you can't be the vote that casts a comment into the negative without giving a reason, and then that reason would be turned into a comment. If something is worth downvoting then it is worth explaining why someone is wrong. If you can't do that maybe you shouldn't downvote. I don't think you should have to do that every time. But if a comment is going to go negative someone should step up to the plate and bother to articulate. That way a comment can't get hidden away from the public just because a petty mob that can't even present an argument sees it as convenient if certain information disappears.

So in that case the downvoter who crossed it into the negative would not be anonymous.

  • Exercise doesn't lose weight. Weight is 99% controlled by diet. Exercise will make you not feel like shit so you don't use food as a dopamine hit. Which is why moderate exercise is better for weight loss. If your workout is making you feel like shit, that might be good for fitness and performance, but it still won't lose weight faster, and now you are eating more to support recovery.

So there are two pathways exercise can impact weight.

    Exercise -> psychology -> diet -> weight
Exercise -> calorie consumption -> weight

The first one just happens to be more impact because the second one does almost nothing at all. Any useful pathway has to hit diet because that's 99% of weight (at least of the factors you have control over).
