What is "Mobile Services" and would disabling it prevent me from being able to send and receive texts or calls?
  • I would consider doing that but I'd rather not have to go through the process of re-downloading all my apps and re-customizing my phone just because I disabled a potentially important app.

  • What is "Mobile Services" and would disabling it prevent me from being able to send and receive texts or calls?
  • I forgot to mention these in my previous comment but I've added some information about the app in my post. As for that app that you mentioned, I've never used ADB commands before and I don't want to risk bricking my phone, so I don't know if I'm going to use it.

  • What is "Mobile Services" and would disabling it prevent me from being able to send and receive texts or calls?
  • It's not the account that I'm worried about. It's hard for me to explain what I'm actually concerned about. I guess an example would be that the SIM card becomes invalid or something. One of the phones where I disabled Mobile Services has an effectively permanent error at the top of the screen that says "invalid SIM card".

  • What is "Mobile Services" and would disabling it prevent me from being able to send and receive texts or calls?
  • Yes but it's still possible and I have yet to see someone mention that they were able to disable it and still use their phone service.

  • What is "Mobile Services" and would disabling it prevent me from being able to send and receive texts or calls?
  • I would try but I don't want to disable something if I don't know for sure that it's safe to disable.

  • What is "Mobile Services" and would disabling it prevent me from being able to send and receive texts or calls?
  • I'd try that but I don't want to end up finding out that disabling it permanently disables my phone's service. My phone's service is through Tracfone and they are the developers of the app.

  • What is "Mobile Services" and would disabling it prevent me from being able to send and receive texts or calls?
  • Ok I figured out that you don't actually have to setup Shizuku to use Canta. The only problem is that Canta doesn't provide a description for Mobile Services. It just provides the package name, which I searched for online, but the only thing I can find is that it's specific to Tracfone devices.

  • What is "Mobile Services" and would disabling it prevent me from being able to send and receive texts or calls?
  • I actually can't uninstall it but I just using my phone's settings app and either remove or disable it depending on what that phone allows me to do. Canta seems pretty complicated to use but I'll try it and see what it tells me.

  • What is "Mobile Services" and would disabling it prevent me from being able to send and receive texts or calls?

Most of the android phones I've had came preinstalled with something called "Mobile Services". I normally remove it because it just keeps randomly installing apps and games that don't want but I've never had an active phone plan on those phones. If I disabled it from my phone, would I still be able to send and receive calls and texts?

So far the only thing I have found out is that "Mobile Services" is an app that is only preinstalled on android phones who's carrier is Tracfone.

Edit: Even though I wasn't able to get an answer, I've decided to just disable it. I wont be manually testing it and I wont be updating this post with results. I no longer care at this point and I wont be responding to anymore comments about this.

What Browser do you use on Android, and why?
  • I've been using Fennec F-Droid, which is based on Firefox. I mostly use it because I want a non-chromium based browser and Firefox and it's derivatives have browser extensions on android. I chose Fennec F-Droid because, while I could be wrong, it seems to be slightly smaller and run slightly faster than Firefox.

  • RuneScape is increasing their membership price by 50%, and Reddit is trying to censor it
  • There, I fixed it. It took me a while to understand what the problem was but I figured it out.

  • RuneScape is increasing their membership price by 50%, and Reddit is trying to censor it
  • The Reddit community is part of the reason I stopped playing RuneScape a few years ago. The in-game community was fine for the most part, as players would mostly keep to themselves or just talk with their own groups. But the subreddit would get super offended/aggressive towards each other for the stupidest things and the mods always seemed to make things worse.

I've always been of the believe that all online games with subscription services should always be $60 a year at most. If you do the math, $60 a year per player is way more than what single-player games make and maintaining/updating online games doesn't require as much work as making brand new games either.

And yes, I'm aware of the whole thing with the bonds and how they technically allow you to play the game for free but, at least compared to the old prices, they aren't as efficient as just buying a member and Jagex makes more money off of them. So, I still think that Jagex shouldn't change the membership prices.

  • I realize I may get some divisive answers, but if NATO Countries all agreed, mobilized, and went into Russia full force with no warning, what are the likely outcomes?
  • I haven't been paying to much attention to the news but I've heard that other, non-NATO, countries have threatened some of the countries that are just simply giving aid to Ukraine. So, I'd assume that those other countries would get involved in some way and just make things worse for everyone.

  • Microsoft begins cracking down on people dodging Windows 11's system requirements
  • The thing that I don't understand is that, if this is such a big problem for Microsoft, why not just remove the system requirements or at least make an alternative version of Windows 11 that, even if it lacks certain features, doesn't have those requirements?

Microsoft wants people to switch to Windows 11 but a majority stay with Windows 10 because their systems don't have what's required and they're either not willing to use Linux or they can't for what ever their reason is. Making Windows 11 more accessible to Windows 10 users would fix this problem for most users but they're not for some reason. I know they're Microsoft and Microsoft doesn't care about their users but they're seemingly willing to lose a significant portion of their users over something so insignificant, which is out of character for Microsoft.

  • What android keyboard app do you use and why?
  • I know you're probably just joking but I'm not actually sure why it's called that. The only thing it does that other keyboards don't (outside of having more keys than anyone would probably need) is that, I'm pretty sure it's the smallest keyboard app for android. It's only 1 MB while the second smallest keyboard I know is the LG Keyboard and that uses a little over 4 MB.

  • What android keyboard app do you use and why?
  • While I normally use whatever the default keyboard app is, I do sometimes use Unexpected Keyboard. It doesn't have auto-correct but it has more keys available than even normal keyboards do. It may take some getting used to though as, for example, to use the "alts" for each key, you have to swipe in that direction. So for example if you wanted to press "Esc" with the default settings, you'd press q and swipe diagonally down and to the right.

For customization, I don't know if you can add images or gifs but there is some visual options and you have pretty much full control over the layout of the keyboard and what keys it has.

  • Fellow Americans, when did you realize the "America is #1!" propaganda they feed us was a lie?
  • I think since at least middle school. I was already aware of some of the lies and "half truths" that they were teaching us. I don't remember most of what they taught us but I remember telling some of my classmates about it and they acted like I was weird.

  • Good game soundtracks?
  • I can provide some examples if you are looking for something specific but to list some games that haven't been mentioned yet, there's:

The Touhou games along with the remixes/covers and fan games like the two "Touhouvania" games.

    Most of the Castlevania games.

Most of the Sonic games and fan games like Sonic After the Sequel and SRB2.

And to go with something really obscure, Chaos Legion.

  • What could be done to make PeerTube more popular?
  • There are currently two main reasons I don't use PeerTube:

    1. Videos have inconsistent playback performance.
    2. It's pretty confusing and difficult to use if you are just looking for an experience similar to YouTube.

If they can find a way to make playback performance consistent and make the entire experience better, then I'd consider using it. But, I already use YouTube alternatives like Odysee and Rumble, so I don't know how much I'd end up actually using PeerTube.

I give you 100 dollars (or the equivalent in your country) and you must spend it today all in a single thing. What do you pay/buy with it?
  • I'm going to assume that I can't just buy a 100$ gift card to buy multiple things, so I'd probably just buy a cheap tablet/phone or something.

On a bit of a tangent, I actually looked into android tablets to see if you could actually buy one for 100$. It looks like you can get some decent ones but I'm so confused by their wording. I hate that they seem to use the terms "ram", "rom" and "memory" both interchangeably and completely differently from how their used for PCs. Does anyone else have this issue or is the mobile market completely different from the PC market?

  • Do other languages have similar acronyms to 'tbh', 'imo', 'smh', etc?
  • One that I'm aware of is "tskr" in Japanese. It's a slang term that derives from たすかる (tasukaru). The meaning depends on the context and it can mean something like either "you saved me" or "thanks for helping me".

  • Does anyone know what happened to the developer DreamSky? All of their apps on the Google Play Store are completely missing and they don't seem to be responding to support emails.

About a week ago, I tried to download one of their games but for some reason, every single game/app they ever released is completely missing from the Google Play Store. I can't even download them through my library. I tried sending them an email but they never responded. Both their social media and their website seem to be abandoned and mention nothing about their sudden disappearance. I don't think I've ever seen a developer just completely disappear like that, does anyone know what happened to them?

Also, because it's relevant to a recent movement* and I feel like mentioning it, the game I was trying to download was Lophis Roguelike:Card RPG game. I bought this game a few years ago but it didn't work on my tablet, so I added it to my backlog of android games, thinking that I could eventually try it on a different device. Seeing that this game is no longer officially available, this is a game that I payed for but never got to actually play.

*The movement I'm referring to is stopkillinggames.

What in Android can potentially cause specific functions of Bluetooth devices to be blocked unless I am physically touching the screen?

I am having an issue with two different Bluetooth devices on one of my Android phone and I don't understand what's causing it because these two devices work perfectly fine on every other Android device I own. The first device is a Bluetooth mouse and apps that use the mouse directly (like either FreeDoom or Delta Touch) can only detect mouse movement when I am physically touching the screen. The other device is an 8BitDo SF30 Pro and apps can detect everything except for the D-pad and analog sticks unless I'm, once again, physically touching the screen.

Any ideas of what can cause this?

In Libreoffice Calc, is it possible to dynamically freeze multiple rows?

For example, if I wanted to always see rows 5, 10 and 15, as far as I can tell, I would have to freeze every row from 1 to 15. But is it possible to only freeze the specified rows so that if I scrolled down, the first four rows could be 5, 10, 15 and 20.

If anyone here plays Curse of Aros, is the wiki correct when it states that skeletal bats and snakes drop cursed staves?

I've been trying on and off for the past few months to get a cursed staff but it seems like they don't drop them. I've actually fought so many of them that I've gotten at least 3 skeletal bat pet drops, which are supposed to be even rarer. I had a similar issue with ice staves where the wiki states that snow bats drop them but it seemed like they didn't and I had to get them from snowmen, even though the wiki stated that they don't drop ice staves.

When I shutdown my computer last night, it gave me this error message. It seems to be working fine but should I be considered?

I'm not sure what fixed it because I tried multiple things yesterday, but it shutdown normally last night.

I'm looking for something that I can do with my phone that would be at least "semi-passively productive", any suggestions?

I wasn't sure how to word the title but what I mean by "semi-passively productive" is something that I can have running on the phone that requires little to no interaction and is in some way beneficial to me.

What I've been doing is just using a website called Musio (one of the sister sites of Hideout TV), which is a website where you can earn points by watching videos and redeem those points for gift cards. While the amount of points I've been earning has been significantly lower than it used to be, I have other reasons why I'm looking for potential alternatives, whether it be another website or an app. It doesn't have to be a "beer money" site/app either, it's just that I'm not sure of what else there could be. The only requirement that I have is that it can work on older android devices.

Also, yes I'm aware of r/beermoney on Reddit but I don't have a Reddit account anymore and it seems like some of the posts that the wiki on r/beermoney linked to have been deleted.

Is there something similar to App Watcher but for F-Droid?

If you don't know what App Watcher is, it's an app that allows you to get notified when apps on the Google Play store receive updates even if you don't have them installed.

The update manager in Linux Mint updated libllvm15 and now Brave is completely unusable for me. Is it possible to fix this without using a system backup?

Brave is my primary web browser but every page I visit isn't being rendered correctly at all and some pages are completely broken. I have a system backup from a few days ago but I'd prefer not to have to use it if I can. I think Brave is the only thing that was affected but I think I should try to revert the update if it's possible.

What is a good way to benchmark test a GPU in Linux?

Edit: I was able to run some benchmark tests, so I don't need help with this anymore, but after running the tests, I'm pretty sure my computer is having hardware issues. I don't really have any other options, though, so I just have to deal with it.

The computer I was using stopped working and I had to switch to a different computer but despite having a significantly better GPU, games are performing only slightly better. I want to benchmark test the GPU to see if it's a potential hardware problem or if something else is causing a bottleneck.

I'm looking to use a different Linux distro but I think that there is a potential issue with ext4 and I wanted to not only ask if it could be the case but also ask what solution I should use if it is.

I'm currently using Ubuntu and I want try a different distro but so far the only one I've tried was Porteus but I had an issue where Porteus wouldn't boot if it was installed on top of ext4 but would boot fine if it was installed on top of fat32, which is also another potential problem because Porteus requires a save file for persistence when using Windows filesystems. If there is a problem where my computer can't boot with an ext4 filesystem, Ubuntu doesn't have this problem because sda1/2/3 all use a different filesystem.

If I'm correct on this, would I be better off trying Porteus on ext3/2 and hoping it works or just use it with fat32 and have a separate partition formatted for ext4 to serve the same purpose as sda3 in Ubuntu and possibly store the save file (if I have the correct understanding of how save files work).

Also, I would just use NTFS but not only have I heard that it has issues with Linux, I've had issues using it with Linux, so I'm using fat32 for stability.

My phone's WiFi adapter keeps turning itself on but nothing that I've done on previous phones seems to be working. Any ideas as to what I can try?

I usually keep the WiFi off but on my "new" phone, the WiFi adapter will randomly be on when I turn the phone on. So far I've tried the following, in order of when they show up in settings:

    1. In advanced WiFi settings, I've disabled "keep WiFi on when screen is off" but it seems to completely ignore this.

    2. Turned off WiFi scanning in the location settings.

    3. I checked app permissions but the permission to connect to WiFi either doesn't seem to exist or it's listed as something different. (If it's listed as "change system settings", I've already disabled all of the apps that had that.)

    4. I don't know if it had any impact on this issue but I did technically do a factory reset but it was for a completely different reason.

I've tried "just Googling" it but every article that pops up, either tells me to do something that my phone doesn't seem to have the options for or it tells me to do something I've already tried. The phone is an LG Rebel 4 running android 8.

My mom got a new phone (Samsung Galaxy A13 5G) and it's having problems with phone service. I'm not much of a phone person, so I was hoping someone here would be able to help us.

Her phone is having two issues:

    1. Texts from other phones are received several hours after they were sent when she's away from home, texts that she sends always go through instantly. If she's at home, she always gets texts instantly.

    2. Her phone keeps coming up as "offline" on some other phones.

As I stated in the title, I'm not familiar with phones, so I have no idea where to even start with this. I have done nothing more than a google search that didn't give me any results relevant to the issues.
