  • This makes me worried about the ultra cheap Chinese manufacturers. I mean the likes of Unihertz, Umidigi, Ulefone, Doogee, Oukitel, etc

Usually these don't get updates at all.
Even weirder, for example I have Ulefone Armor 24. They used to ship with Android 13. They still advertised it with Android 13 when I bought it. Mine like a few others have said arrived with Android 14, but the earlier ones aren't offered A14 update.
Someone on Reddit contacted support about this and they replied that they don't provide cross-level upgrades because Google doesn't allow them to release those to end users.

Anyway, point is, they save on everything possible, starting with software updates. And I have doubts about them changing this, unless EU is a large market for them.

  • YouTube is getting a new tool that generates Shorts

All I needed to know. I hoped for a button to report AI slop.

  • Also about:

Genuinely surprised to hear someone using 2G data, given 3G was phased out as is.

At least in some countries around Europe, 3G was shutdown rather than 2G. It used up more bandwidth, and most devices can still fallback to 2G, plus at least in Slovakia 2G had superior coverage. Well, still has over 4G/5G.
Plus there's a lot of 2G-only IoT devices like electric and gas meters, and those companies are less likely to upgrade than individual customers.

So far, only Orange plans to shutdown 2G, sometime around 2028. I've also seen an idea to keep one single 2G network that would be shared between all 4 carriers, which is an idea I quite like.
Remember, it's also a fallback for modern devices when VoLTE/VoWiFi/VoNR doesn't work.

  • I think you're mixing it up with Kb/s. Bits vs bytes. 21KB/s is 168Kb/s, which is faster than the fastest dial-up.

  • Not the slight influence on statistics. I am contemplating actually downloading the Wikipedia over 2G too.

I wish the statistics were published, I'd like to see how much of a dent it makes, at least in total monthly data transfer. And of course, also connection time by technology and frequency band. Actually, no, I want to see all the statistics they have.

Sadly, the only ISP that publishes at least something is the Slovak Academic Network (SANET): https://samon.bts.sk/mapa/
But this is just a fixed connection ISP used at places like schools.

Plus it's cool how the bytes got to me.

  • The first sentence.

And there's also the thing that I just like seeing old tech still being used. For the last week of 3G before its shutdown, I switched my phone to 3G only, all the way until my phone got disconnected. It felt sad to see it go.
Plus I like to influence statistics, so I do certain things differently, just to influence them. I understand that I am a small sample, but still one that counts.

    1. Second cellphone.
    2. You don't need a SIM card to call emergency numbers.

2nd is also important in that your phone is always connected (unless in airplane mode) to some cellular network, and can still be tracked the same way (unique IMEI).

  • We went here to say the same. Hey fellow hydrohomie!

  • For weeks I've been trying to figure out if and how I can manually configure the NetworkManager connectivity check. I've probably spent a few hours browsing around the internet.

The answer is in NetworkManager.conf man page, as I found yesterday. Surprising, I know.

  • Silence? Nah, here's half a song, hope you weren't enjoying that one.

  • Don't forget to mention using the pause button rather than stop. You don't want the sound of the tape speeding up on the next song.

  • It also let's you spoof some devices to download "incompatible" apps.

  • There's also MeshCore, and now the networks are split between these 2.

  • Chinese.

The projector thing isn't quite new, actually. Samsung Galaxy Beam did this in 2012. Though that projector was 15 lumens, Unihertz has one with 100 lumen projector. It also has a cooling fan for that, and huge battery that makes it a bit of a brick.

I myself have Ulefone Armor 24, and I do like the brick form-factor, but I know most people probably wouldn't.

    These are listed for the Tank 3 Pro: 2G GSM (Bands 2/3/5/8), 3G WCDMA (Bands 1/2/4/5/6/8/19), 3G CDMA2000 (Bands BC0/BC1), 4G FDD-LTE (Bands 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/13/17/18/19/20/25/26/28A/28B/66), 4G TDD-LTE (Bands 34/38/39/40/41/42), 5G NR (Bands N1/2/3/5/7/8/12/13/20/25/26/28/38/40/41/77/78)

You can find band number list on Wikipedia to get the frequency.

Checking T-Mobile US website, it seems to lack 600MHz for both "extended range" 4G and 5G as well as mmWave 5G support.

Keep in mind the possible lack of updates with no custom ROMs available. That just sucks, and is usual with such Chinese brands.

  • Yeah, these use MediaTek SOCs, and required source code is not available. Which is why the custom ROM scene is so lacking on MediaTek side. And I wouldn't expect updates from brands like this, unfortunately.

  • I used to carry 2 batteries. Though that's probably not a large market. But if made around that idea it could be done well.

Either having hibernation or some power source to keep the RAM powered during main battery swap (small supercapacitor, small regular Li-Ion battery, thin lithium ceramic battery, I don't know what's best), and a dock for battery charging.

    Kind of like LG G5.

Preferably, the battery would have integrated charger so you don't have to carry around a dock. Just what you do now, just with the spare battery replacing a power bank in more convenient way. Maybe it could come off with the charging port just like LG G5, but it would be built-in rather than being something you pop a different battery into.

  • There's Unihertz. They have some interesting devices, but unfortunately they aren't sold where I live. A lot of them are just screwed together.

Unihertz believes that there should be different types of smartphones for all kinds of people. That’s why we are committed to making unique smartphones. We hope people can have more diverse choices.

I can get it from resellers on places like Allegro, but I am really worried about returns or warranty. I have some specific requirements that I basically just need to try out, and then if necessary, return the device.

Last time I bought 3 candidates before making the final decision.
