Frequently paying any amount of money for anything will always seem like a good deal to anyone who always depends on others to do everything. There's no shame in needing each other, though. We should strive to be self sufficient but can't be skilled or resourceful in every field. Abusing the needs of others on the other hand... All these huge companies should burn to the ground for that.

That's a huge oversimplification. UX design and a careful selection of settings and features, for instance, have a big role in that regard. It's not what you prohibit but what you incentivize too.

I'd make backups of my purchases and share them with love for preservation and promotion of their authors hard work. "Piracy" was already shown to increase sales, not reduce them. If you really want to do something against an artist you no longer align with, dont consume their products. Don't purchase, don't download and don't share their stuff. Just look around for other artists you do align with, get hooked to their art and support them instead.

None. I dislike some actors, but so many other people pour part of themselves into these things and influence each other when developing them that it's impossible for me to not have at least some curiosity.

But granted your point is a really good one. These AI ready laptops don't give the bang for your buck you'd expect. We're all better off taking good care of our older harware and waiting longer for components that are a true improvement to replace them.

Gen AI should be private, secure, local and easier to train by it's users to fit their own needs. Closest thing to this at the moment seems to be Kobold.

Mastodon user here since 2017. Sure, Bluesky requires less learning for those who come from other centralized platforms and nobody has to deal with fediblock drama over there. Some may also point to Bluesky's users being less tech-savvy and less prone to dogpiling on tech companies for their poor decisions, which I don't believe is completely true. Something I do love about Mastodon though is I don't need any mods or admins to make decisions for me. I can calmly stay in an instance I trust and filter everything, every single small bit, to fit my own criteria. I get others think this is bad moderation and wish to depend on third parties to answer their reports, clean the servers and "do justice" but I prefer to make those decisions myself and let others make theirs.

Your instincts are probably well placed. Obviously different people will have different preferences and reactions in this regard, but you're better off getting to know people in a friendly manner than just for the sake of finding a partner. Learning how to strike up conversations with strangers and leave them wanting for more is useful, but that's about all I'd say your parents are right about.

That is the usual effect sensationalism has, but feel free to choose what best suits your needs.

I do enjoy Cromite, Librewolf, Mullvad Browser, Tor Browser and some others, but I can't deny each (as any) has it's own set of drawbacks. Better to have them in mind when setting up and using those browsers than to panic and run in circles searching for a perfect solution that doesn't exist.

Even more importantly I'd celebrate that people are using any privacy focused FOSS, even if it's not what I'd ideally use. If they feel motivated to keep on that road they'll end learning to use more advanced options in time. On the other hand, make them feel insecure about their options and bloat their minds with sensationalist posts and they'll just use Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge because, "personally", why bother when everyone and everything is so evil and complicated and we're all doomed anyway? 😮‍💨

Why I recommend against pushing people away from Brave:

Most people are still trapped in an ecosystem owned by either Microsoft, Google or Apple. We're yet to see a perfect web browser for everyone, but in the meantime we choose one, maybe two or three if we feel a bit more picky for each task, and use them to the best of our capacity. Making anyone feel guilty and ashamed for choices like this, when the best options are few, relative, and often come at a cost, is just useless.

I suggest reading the settings guides available at privacyguides.org/en/desktop-browsers/ or checking the browser comparison at eylenburg.github.io/browser_comparison.htm to know the details that anyone who actually wants a better browsing experience cares about. Better to lend a hand than push around.

If whoever reads this still can't get over it and needs to play a blame game with someone about why everyone should boycott Mozilla, Brave, Proton and other privacy focused FOSS companies because of what someone said, did or thought, please at least find a decent fork, toss a coin to it's devs, share their work and help others benefit from it.
