I worry this is just rationalizing ones passivity as just an inherent part of ones assumed "goodness."

That's good, they might have improved. Mine didn't last a year, but I think it was an earlier version.
It was a few years ago so I can't really comment on newer versions. But I recall the plastic bottom coming away from the top more and more over time. They don't manufacture their own laptops, so they are kinda stuck relying on a third party. (Clevo, I think.)

That's something I hadn't considered. I'll look into it. My naive expectation is that I would need better optics.
I have not been at all dissatisfied with its clarity. I bet on a LCD or OLED screen the DPI would be noticeable, but not on an e-ink display.
With black and white, I'm actually interested in doing the development myself. So once I'm comfortable doing it by the numbers I'll probably give that a shot. Thanks.
