I have heard of getting brain eating amoebas, mostly from swimming in lakes or still water. I think this is the first time I've heard about them coming from using a nettle pot. Looking it up, it looks like a lot of cases come from nettle pots, but "a lot" is relative. There are only a dozen or so cases a year from any source. I still wonder if any of those cases really come from city water or if they are from well and cistern water like this lady used. Either way, following the instructions that come with the pot would have saved those people.
You are correct about the meaning being not to have other gods, I didn't say it was a mistranslation. I said they are purposefully taking the alternate and more popular meaning of the word "before". In the scripture it means 'in front of' or 'in my sight'. They take the meaning as 'in line in front of'. Because of the eccentricities of English and many other languages, the meaning could be taken either way if you didn't have context. Also, the joke hinges on ignoring that mentioning other gods doesn't mean they exist or exist in the way they are purported to exist. In that German translation from the post I was replying to, the translation was more specific and didn't lend as much confusion.
The joke hinges on misusing an alternate meaning to an English word that is a translation already from ancient Hebrew (likely via Latin). I am pretty sure the artist is well aware of this. Of course, some people will read this comic and think they discovered some profound contradiction...
I fought hard against that for years. I still only use 'app' for phone programs, but I stopped correcting people every time they used the term for anything else. It isn't technically wrong, but it grates on my nerves for some reason.
Well, that is probably good. I always feel a little pessimistic when I see something like this. Any time they can increase production, they tend to think about the dollars first and the impact second. It took way too long for regulation to catch up with them putting antibiotics in feed to increase production. I think they wouldn't stop by themselves if they had to put a few diabetics in comas if they could increase egg production by some percentage. (I am also very pro-farmer, but competition forces out anybody who won't sink to the common low.)
I wonder what the price is currently and how this will affect it. I would hope that finding a non-human medical use will drive the price of the medicine down as production goes up. Likely they will just manufacture a lower grade, deplete supplies of whatever it takes to make it and raise the price for human medicine for good measure.
