What is RedNote? The TikTok alternative that doesn't allow showing skin or LGBTQ+ content
  • Russia did this using Facebook and Twitter. All these systems are compromised. Bad actors are using American social media sites to fuck up other countries too

Yes banning TikTok is the correct move the problem is it’s only TikTok.

  • What is RedNote? The TikTok alternative that doesn't allow showing skin or LGBTQ+ content
  • I am not a fan of TikTok. I’m saying all social media is a problem on some level. Any of those articles can be matched by equally bad ones about American platforms.

The TikTok ban doesn’t pass the smell test for most people. It feels like out of touch boomers going “REEEE CHINA AHHHHH”

  • People like you are missing the point. I think many people are very sober about what is going on, but nothing unites people like stupid fucking policies.

Prohibition culture just leads to acts of rebellion. The more you tell young people not to do something, the more they want it. It’s not about red note, it’s that this TikTok ban is stupid and people find this whole thing entertaining

  • Proton CEO embraces Trump for "standing up for the little guys"
  • You’re still reaching. A privacy company praising a spyware company is not the same as one member of a board on his own praising Trump for something not even related to privacy. Stop forcing this. You’re reaching.

  • Your comparison would be appropriate if this was a statement coming out in favor of spyware. Additionally if we looked more closely at who you support, I bet we would find some pretty egregious contradictions with your values/the business’s purported values.

All of us would fail at some point if we were scrutinized. That’s why an all or nothing purity test is not productive. We do the best we can where possible and accept that none of us truly have the 100% perfect moral high ground. So it follows that to hold others to that standard is ridiculous.

  • Who makes your phone?

    Who makes your computer?

    Who is your ISP?

    Who do you bank with?

What email client do you use?

    Let’s take a closer look.

I get what you’re driving at truly but man we do what we can and accept we can’t be perfect. I avoid Amazon as much as I can. I’ve left google, I don’t shop at Walmart. I don’t eat chik fil a. I try to avoid known evil brands where I can knowing I can’t be perfect.

Proton gives me a lot of what I need and is exponentially better/more ethical than major competitors like Google. I am good with computers but not good enough to roll my own entire email/calendar/cloud storage system. We sometimes have to accept compromise or i guess just simply not participate in modern society.

  • I need someone to explain to me why I should be guilted into staying on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

By this logic I should be on truth social trying to make it “a better place.” This is fucking stupid. The sites are built on rage bait, The algorithms want to keep you angry and fighting with people online. You are fighting against massive companies who have weaponized your data against you for the purpose of making sure you hang around. The only correct decision is to leave.

We need to build our own spaces and defend them.

  • Anon gets corrected
  • ”sorry for the tasteless joke and devolving the conversation, here’s a sarcastic exit instead.”

You’re something else dude. Feel free to have the last word, I’m sure it’s very important to you.

  • How To Store, Stream, Backup & Protect?
  • You don’t need a NAS or RAID to have a decent media streaming setup. I have a 42TB RAID5 and I use a 5TB Sandisk SSD as my daily driver on a 8 year old Lenovo running elementary OS. Can support probably 4 streams simultaneously before it’s chugging.

    • Look into plex (people will whine about this but I say do it given your current comfort level - Jellyfin is likely not a good option for you yet)

    • Get some external drives (research “3-2-1 backup” if you want industry standard practices to protect against data loss)

    • Get a battery backup surge protector. These kick on when power goes out and protects your hardware better.

    Good luck!

  • Anon gets corrected
  • If your general assumption is “people who get offended are just deliberately misunderstanding me” then I don’t know how this conversation can be productive. That’s not sociopathic but it sure is a selfish outlook as well as one that explains your tasteless snowflake joke.
