Can I get an invite to that space please
With the way I'm approaching learning, I never really learn words in isolation. I get exposed to new words as they are used in natural conversational language, which means I'm only exposed to the word with the gendered article that belongs to it, so I haven't had to try and explicitly remember which word is gendered which way.
I'm learning Spanish, and there is a huge amount of natural comprehension content for Spanish out there. And once I got to a certain point, I was able to move on to (simple) native speaker content. Mostly TV and movies, with Spanish subtitles where possible
For what it's worth, it happens to me as well, but when it does, it occurs on both monitors at the same time. One a 4k 244Hz OLED monitor, the other an older QHD. I put it down to a Plasma bug
I just learn them as part of the word itself. I'm learning via natural comprehension, so it just gives me a "feeling" when it's not right.
Thank you for the birthday gifts of bird photos :)
Very similar to the bike I use!
There are many reasons to be frightened. It just doesn't help to add fictional stories (or at best secondhand anecdotes) to that.
This is what I mean. You are so sure it's a lie, something that you don't know for sure either, to the extent that you're willing to actively encourage gender diverse people to throw caution to the wind and put their complete faith in a system that was actively working against their interests even before the new president was elected.
Caution is warranted. A bunch of non regular posters to this community seeing this post and deciding to tell trans people that it's all ok, and that they should continue to trust the system, that their caution is unwarranted? If you don't see how being part of that chorus is a problem, then I don't know what to tell you...
No one knows the truth here. I don't know whether it happened or not.
But what I do know is that a bunch of people who are not normally in this space suddenly joining in the conversation to tell trans people that they're being unreasonable for worrying about stuff like this is not on. One or two comments, whatever, but when the majority of comments are non regulars telling trans people the world is ok, despite it clearly not being, it's time to step in.
I've already put a couple of mods on, so its in their hands now :)
Is there a "normie" or more mainstream instance for Lemmy?
A nazi sympathising president was voted in, because the overton window has shifted sufficiently to the right to allow that to happen.

The US has a nazi sympathising president, backed by a billionaire who gives nazi salutes in public. So I don't agree that saying the US is to the right of most of the world is incorrect.
In small, guided groups, yes
I'm disappointed that the majority of top level replies to this post is a bunch of people deciding to jump in and question its validity. Yeah, it may not be true. But it also could be true, because bigots feel empowered at the moment and may well act in the way described even if they're not technically "meant" to.
So yes, express caution and don't assume everything you read is true, but conversely don't come in to a queer space, in the middle of an active movement against gender diverse folk, and fill the comment section with denials and second guessing, as if everything is fine and its business as usual, as if people are being unreasonable for being concerned
I'm hoping to see one when I'm in New Zealand next month!

Add me to the list. Not helped by the fact that "-ik" is a common russian suffix.

I'm not saying that if you don't want to destroy capitalism that you're not left. I'm saying that the perspective that reddit itself was "definitely left of center" is not a widely shared perspective, and if you believe that reddit of all places was left of center, then lemmy, which actually is left of center, is going to feel very left of center.
That's an interesting idea. I was wondering how it would scale, but as the network grows, even if it just grabbed some random stuff from remote instances, it would still help it grow by giving the local instance plenty of content to seed from

Reddit was only ever left of center for Americans. To many/most non Americans, America consists of a far right party and a center to center right party.
What you're seeing is the result of a platform that wasn't first created by and for American audiences, and whose initial takeup wasn't dominated by American perspectives.
It's really hard with small, starting instances.
Basically, the only content that gets federated to you is content produced by someone that a person on your instance follows. And once it federates to you, it becomes searchable and viewable to other members on your instance. Which means that the more people you have, the more content gets federated too you, and the easier it is for your users to find new content.
And new users that no one on your instance follows at all won't appear to any of your users in searches etc, which is where "boosting" a post comes in. If I post a photo, and no one on your instance follows me, none of your users will see it. But if someone that they do follow, follows me and likes my photo, they "boost" it, and then it appears in the timelines of people that follow them. And then once a single person on your instance starts following me, my future content will start federating to you.
Which means that as an admin, the best thing you can do is start up a seed account, and just follow lots and lots of people. Follow random people. Follow anyone and everyone, just so you get a critical mass of content sliding to your instance.
This is a problem that all fediverse platforms suffer from. The initial hump to get good visibility of federated content is a challenge. Once you cross it, you're fine, but to cross it, you either need to be patient and give it time, or you need to artificially kickstart it
