I hate to say this but reddit probably doesn't care if r/piracy stays dark. We were probably one of the subs they were hoping to get rid of.
With that said i support the movement. The biggest loss is the institutional knowledge since we can't just search for an old post

It's why this blackout has been a blessing, since piracy days on reddit were numbered anyways. I'm glad we got to get our community elsewhere before being randomly banned before there was an opportunity to regroup.
Have had many lost communites like megaupload back in the day that reddit killed off. With how helpful the piracy community has been with stuff like the wiki Reddit would have set their eyes on us anyways in the long run.
Archive.org probably has backed up a lot of stuff. regardless, I'm kinda sad tho that I promised someone I'd send them a file but i procrastinated and this happened, so I can't find the original comment anymore rip

I agree fully except with the mirror aspect. Mirroring is what tends to cause the dissolution of alternatives like Lemmy. It makes it too convenient and a target by bigger powers. It is federated but that doesn't mean it's invincible. It would be smart to keep it separate and try to let it become its own thing. Grassroots promotion may be the way to go. I mean, I agree, mirroring would be nice and convenient, but we have to be smart and use tact as well.

I 100% support a permanent shutdown of r/Piracy, but at the same time, I think it would be very useful if the contents of r/Piracy were made available elsewhere for archival purposes. Could the sub be temporarily reopened in read-only mode to allow for it to be scraped? Or is it already available somewhere?

Yes, only for the purposes of archival and so people who aren't aware of /r/piracy being reborn like a phoenix on lemmy can find us. But, never unrestricted.
We'll probably need more than one day if the archive includes all of the threads (which also include a lot of good information) and not just the wiki. There is this Reddit importer that can take post and comment data scraped from the Reddit API and import it into Lemmy, but because of the volume of data, it will take a while before the scraping is complete by July 1st.

Always have, but this shriveled up dickbag, Spez, royally fucking over 3rd party devs by pricing out their apps and even removing the ability to have NSFW content be viewable on their apps is a royal slap in the face in the highest degree.
I understand that as a business you need to turn a profit (I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Capitalist), but completely pricing 3rd party devs out of the market and making mods (who are all VOLUNTEERS btw) use the bullshit, clunky ass first party modding tools aint it. I heard rumor that they would allow 3rd party modding tools and bots via LTT, but I trust nothing.

I like that it is linked directly from the Private Community message on Reddit. I wish more subreddit picked a new official place and linked it, that way people would actually try something else instead of waiting the end of the blackout.
Reddit can permanently ban mod doing that : /r/adviceanimals was going dark, then the admins booted the head mod and installed an admin friendly one. The excuse was "brigading".

Well, I hope this means that all those who followed this subreddit will come over here because, in the end, if Lemmy provides enough content to be a Reddit successor, it will succeed but, if it becomes a mere shadow of what was available there, it’ll fade away just like some of the “Twitter replacement” platforms have.

Sync for Reddit is thinking of working on Lemmy support. If the big apps move to Lemmy, it could push a lot of traffic to it and keep the exodus going. Encourage it on syncs GitHub and discord server.

For me the Lemmyverse fills the same space. Like Usenet back in the Before Time. Even if Reddit were to do a complete 180/mea culpa I would no longer have a need for them, and the longer it goes on the more users will be comfortable here.
The question is: Will lemmy be sufficient to replace reddit? I hope it is, I have no issue leaving Reddit.
I feel like it's going to take a while, but as niche subs migrate, hopefully we'll see more content. That's the biggest thing we're really lacking is user content.

Never thought about how this relates to net neutrality. Reddit was kind of becoming a "common carrier" for information, but as a centralized source it's in their interest to filter content for money's sake. Here in the fediverse the communities (and their data) are cloned but constantly updated across many independently owned servers. So no one server owner can ever really steer the discourse. We just need an official way to migrate a community in the case an instance goes down/stops meeting the needs of the community.

You can only login to the instance where you create your account. You can however suscribe to communities on other instances.
You don't log into the other instances to access their communities. Instead, you log into your local instance and use the search function to search for the target community. Just enter the community name like that: !nameofcommunity@nameofinstance.
Alternatively you can click on Communities at the top (or the equivalent in your app), select "all" and browse all the communities anyone on your instance has ever searched for using the first method.
Federated means separated. There isn't one main big Lemmy like one main big reddit. It's a bunch of little Lemmys, like a bunch of little islands. Each little island is a server. You sign up for each server like it's its own individual forum/site. So like, you don't sign up for an entire platform (all of Lemmy), you sign up for one forum/sublemmy.
It works this way on purpose. It is a good thing. Reddit was on GIANT monstrosity, and yes that is convenient. But it was also convenient for one giant corporation to censor, cheat people, and do whatever they want. Is Lemmy slightly less convenient? Yes. It's a few extra clicks. You have to sign up for different servers. But for those few extra clicks, you gain huge freedom and no one corporation controls the whole thing. Entirely worth it, in my mind, to spend another minute or two. These communities are far too valuable to humanity for me to be stingy about convenience. With convenience, comes loss of freedom and personal power. If we don't do the work, a corporation will do all the work for us and then they'll also take whatever they want from us because of that convenience. They unfortunately sometimes prey on people who want the easiest way possible to do things.
You don't need to sign up for different instances. You only need one user on one instance, and you can browse, subcscribe, and comment on posts from other instances from your own home instance.
