Looking for a new instance admin

Hey peeps, after hitting the frontpage of reddit, we got a good amount of new users on our instance, to the point where our admin team was struggling to keep up with the application forms.

More users means more issues and therefore more reports, so we are looking to onboard one more admin to the instance. If you are interested, these are the requirements:

Requirements

  • You must be an anarchist, and enthusiastically endorse the instance policies and our anarchist code of conduct. For example this means we also expect you to also be pro-piracy and not hostile to GenAI.
  • You must have been on this instance for at least 3 months, to ensure you understand our culture. Hopefully you've been a lemmy poster as well as we expect our admins to dogfood our service. If you were already a comm admin, even better!
  • At this point we are prioritizing women and/or PoC to reinforce our team's diverse perspectives. So please apply if you are even if you don't feel as confident.
  • At this point we are prioritizing timezones and countries outside of Europe and the USA to help us get better coverage and better perspectives.
  • You must be willing to use matrix as this is where we organize our instance and our real-time admin chat.
  • You must be willing to keep an eye on reports and applications throughout the day.

What is expected of you

  • We have a fairly chill community around this place, so it's not too demanding. The time requirements are not too large and we will keep expanding the team to ensure the load per individual admin remains low. So long as using this instance is your primary social media, the "workload", such as it is, shouldn't even be noticable.
  • Initiative is encouraged. It's cool enough for people to just want to help us keep this place tidy, but if you have ideas, you will be free to put them into action directly without asking permission all the time, so long as we can rollback easily.
  • You should have a anarchist democratic mindframe. We don't need a voting decision on everything (just do direct action), but you should be willing to be judged on your decisions and roll them back if they are unpopular.
  • Remember that while we're anarchist-flavored, we're not just for anarchists. So we understand that many of our users might be liberals or otherwise misguided. On top of that, we make a point of welcoming neurodivergent people who don't always understand social norms and might phrase things in a way that looks really bad when interpreted uncharitably. As such, we want to help people match our values, without turning a misunderstanding into a hostile experience through heavy-handed actions. So a softer hand and charitability is encouraged, while at the same time being firmly against clearly reactionary takes.

Applying

  • You can leave your comments here, which can allow other members of this comm to vouch for you.
  • Please mention your "credentials" and why you think you would make a good member of the team.
  • If you don't feel comfortable with sharing info, you can reach out to me (or another admin you feel more comfortable with) through PMs or matrix.

Spectating

If you're just watching this governance thread, feel free to upvote applications you feel are worthy, and/or comment on people you want to vouch for. If you're a supporter, remember you can also vouch for people directly through a threativore PM.

  • Hey db, thanks for the instance upkeep as always - I always wondered if there was a (legal) risk having the old FMHY Lemmy be so directly tied to the main site. I'm frankly not familiar with how domains or domain owners are affected by hosting (even just links to) pirated content, but it's been a background concern with this instance as well. That said this is my Lemmy home, just like my FMHY Lemmy account was before it (with a lurking period in between). And since I quit Reddit after the API mess, this is my primary social media (to the detriment of my acquaintanceships and to a lesser extent social life at large lmao. Women my age are not impressed when they hear I haven't used Instagram in a decade, I can tell you that.)

I'm not necessarily throwing my hat in the ring, although I've logged on enough times and seen spam that others haven't gotten to. I feel like there's been a new wave this last week or two. I think I'd be able to help with that if not enough people apply. I'm collapsing most of this into spoilers so I don't make this thread unreadable. Sorry if my post is too verbose, brevity is important and I'm working on it!

I'm at the eastern edge of the EU timezones (I'm in the Middle East, Lebanon, I'm often in adjacent countries for work when travel is not impeded by war). Matrix might just be an issue of convenience, but I can make it work. Checking a browser tab every so often shouldn't be an issue.

Remember that while we’re anarchist-flavored, we’re not just for anarchists. So we understand that many of our users might be liberals or otherwise misguided.

    our team’s diverse perspectives

The following is something I've wanted to post somewhere but haven't known exactly where, so, here goes - it's relevant to the above. I'd like to pick your brains on it. (I see this post is pinned, but I wouldn't mind people discussing things under my comment if you don't think it'll clog up the thread. This is actually specifically why I decided to comment on this post.)

And regarding piracy, we are on the exact same page.

  • Hey, it's fxomt. My main is on .ee but i've been wanting to switch to db0 for a long time anyway so this is a good opportunity.

You must be an anarchist, and enthusiastically endorse the instance policies and our anarchist code of conduct. For example this means we also expect you to also be pro-piracy and not hostile to GenAI.

All good in that regard ;)

You must have been on this instance for at least 3 months, to ensure you understand our culture. Hopefully you've been a lemmy poster as well as we expect our admins to dogfood our service. If you were already a comm admin, even better!

This account is only 3 weeks old sadly, but this is the only point i am lacking in. I am a very frequent lemmy poster, and mod a couple of communities.

At this point we are prioritizing women and/or PoC to reinforce our team's diverse perspectives. So please apply if you are even if you don't feel as confident.

I'm male, but i'm Arab. Hopefully that's good enough.

At this point we are prioritizing timezones and countries outside of Europe and the USA to help us get better coverage and better perspectives.

I'm in AST time (UTC+3), so i'll be able to mod when most of the middle east, parts of russia, poland and the horn of africa and then some are awake.

You must be willing to use matrix as this is where we organize our instance and our real-time admin chat.

Already in the matrix chat room and check it daily :)

You must be willing to keep an eye on reports and applications throughout the day.

    Not an issue.

And of all that is expected from me below i accept it. Even if i don't get accepted i understand, and i wish this instance and its mods the best. Love it, thanks for hosting this place :D

  • I do not match all of the criteria on your wishlist, but just in case you do need some extra help feel free to consider this application, or not, all good.

Dbzer0 is my now my only social media. I joined Lemmy after the Reddit attack on 3rd party apps. I had been active there for 12 years, and it was really disappointing to see the slow, and then very fast enshitifcation of what had become my online home. Something similar had happened to Digg years before that, and it was clear that the fediverse was the way out of corporate controlled internet hangouts that would all inevitably go down the same enshitty road. Federated systems are quickly becoming more and more important

About me: Canadian, he/him, have a three legged cat pics available on request, work online so generally around all the time, use arch btw.

    Thoughts on stuff:

Diversity and inclusion - fierce supporter

    LGBTQIA+ - fierce supporter

Fascism - I'm with Woodie Guthrie on this

AI - Do not like corporate / state controlled AI. Can't insult Musk on GPT. Can't insult the state on DeepSeek. That being said, I like using it to help me with coding, rephrasing emails at work to help me stay professional. Looking forward to more open source AI for the people by the people sorta thing. Anarchist AI

Piracy - Its only a matter of time until Spez ejects the piracy subreddit and megathread into space, at which time I think we will see a large influx of peg-legged refugees here on dbzer0. My seed ratio is good

Dbzer0 - Since landing here I have made it my home. I cannot state how much I appreciate this instance and have no doubts that we will be one of the major fediverse hubs in the near future. I genuinely want to help this place grow, either with my shitposts, flippant comments, or doing admin gruntwork if you think I'm a good fit.

Anyway, there you go, all the best and thanks for what you do here

  • Hi all! I'd like to apply if I may, but with a caveat: I have near-zero experience relevant to adminning. I've been co-admin for a small Discord group for a game I play for a while, and I was op in some IRC rooms 💯 years ago, but that's about it 😅

    Requirements

You must be an anarchist, and enthusiastically endorse the instance policies and our anarchist code of conduct. For example this means we also expect you to also be pro-piracy and not hostile to GenAI.

While I'm not one for political labels in particular, I read up on this aspect when I applied to join and there is nothing in CoC that I'm not in support of. I'm pro-piracy to a bit of an extreme 🏴‍☠️ , and have no issue with GenAI.

You must have been on this instance for at least 3 months, to ensure you understand our culture. Hopefully you’ve been a lemmy poster as well as we expect our admins to dogfood our service. If you were already a comm admin, even better!

I'm not a terribly active commenter and you definitely won't catch me posting often, but I'm a pretty regular reader of top-6h-all. That said this is my primary social media platform 🧓 My cake day is 3 Oct 2023.

At this point we are prioritizing women and/or PoC to reinforce our team’s diverse perspectives. So please apply if you are even if you don’t feel as confident.

I am a white male, but am also LGBT and formally diagnosed ADHD 🤪

At this point we are prioritizing timezones and countries outside of Europe and the USA to help us get better coverage and better perspectives.

I live in Sydney, Australia 🙃 Currently at GMT+11, sorry peeps you're never gonna catch up 🦕

You must be willing to use matrix as this is where we organize our instance and our real-time admin chat.

I'm already a member (sorry about that everyone) 😵‍💫

You must be willing to keep an eye on reports and applications throughout the day.

    No worries there ✅

    Credentials

I'm a generalist Sysadmin/DevOps/Infrastructure/whatever-we're-calling-it-today Engineer with 15 years industry experience 🤓 I'm currently unemployed (and have been for a year or so now) 🍑 but can share my LinkedIn/resume and discuss my work history etc. If I can, I would also like to contribute to the instance, and to Lemmy at large from an infra/automation perspective, but it's difficult to do without visibility into the challenges of running a production instance. I have spent a lot of time in stacks similar to Lemmy's and have been self-hosting (remote) for a decade.

I'll be around (except during an 8-hour period of your day, starting about 6 hours from posting time 😅), hit me up whenever/wherever with whatever 👍

    Thanks admins! 🤝

  • I will offer my assistance, but as I'm a white cis dude, I dont want to be considered if other options qualify. Over specializing breeds weakness!

Love the community, and I want to help however I can... Let's make this place thrive!

  • Requirements You must be an anarchist, and enthusiastically endorse the instance policies and our anarchist code of conduct. For example this means we also expect you to also be pro-piracy and not hostile to GenAI.

Well, I can certainly be pro piracy and pro GenAI and I can get down with an anarchist code of conduct but I simply myself cannot identify as an anarchist as my existence entirely depends on government assistance, and thus get myself disqualified from the position. I am an immigrant from EU living in the US. Good luck with finding a dependable admin.

    • I simply myself cannot identify as an anarchist as my existence entirely depends on government assistance, and thus get myself disqualified from the position

Damn, it genuinely makes me sad to know that you've internalised this ableist and classist toxicity from society (this isn't a you problem, it happens to all of us). Being dependant on the state because it and the capitalism it serves have deliberately left you with no other choice absolutely does not preclude you from taking up a position of resistance against it!

If anything the opposite is true, how the state treats you (wherever in the world you are, I'm sure it's not an easy task to get benefits, and when you do they are at best just enough to live on, and at worst keep you in constant poverty. Here in the UK the system is deliberately designed to kill as many disabled people before they give us the pittance we are entitled to to barely live off of) should radicalise you even further, and gives you an even bigger stake in the game - those of us most oppressed and excluded by capitalism have the most to gain by abolishing it.

It's late here and I'm just vaping my bedtime weed, so I can't think off the top of my head of material to point you towards (E: though I will come back if I can think of any), but please, do try and unlearn these toxic, and incorrect notions that you have been socialised to believe and internalised, they exist to harm you.

If you agree with the ideas of anarchism, there is nothing stopping you from calling yourself an anarchist. 🖤

E: meanwhile this reminded me of

      • Being dependant on the state because it and the capitalism it serves have deliberately left you with no other choice absolutely does not preclude you from taking up a position of resistance against it!

Absolutely not. That being said I'm also not going to bite the hand that feeds me.

when you do they are at best just enough to live on, and at worst keep you in constant poverty.

Being fed and housed is a blessing in this world. I'm glad I don't have to worry about being eaten by a tiger while vultures circle me over head. I know it's constant poverty. I know it's not going to be upper middle class QoL ever. It's better than being hopelessly broken under a bridge.

I was an anarchist, then libertarian, before I finally became an independent. I fundamentally support the ideas of public infrastructure as well and police, medical, and fire department services. I simply can't get behind 'anarchy' this late in my life, especially when I will becoming more dependent on others/the state the older I get especially when I am too old and frail to work.

Anarchy won't work pre-star-trek's post scarcity society imho. It's just an attractive flower for those who yearn the smell of something different than the status quo, but I suspect there will be recoil from the foul taste when it finally touches their lips.

If you agree with the ideas of anarchism, there is nothing stopping you from calling yourself an anarchist. 🖤

I fundamentally don't. I believe public infrastructure should be a thing, and for that to exist, mutually agreed upon rules need to exist. Individuals can exist without rules, society absolutely cannot.

  • hmm, a bit off topic, but if this was based on need for development what are the skills you'd be interested in for applicants ? I presume rust (but don't know the exact tools) and python for genAI,

    • No genai is not relevant to to thus instance and we don't do lemmy backend development. For dev we can use Javascript for someone to help us customize our frontend for our users and python to help each develop our enhancement tools like threativore

      • I hope Javascript doesn't get involved more in Lemmy tbh _ it is the reason facebook looks so ugly imo, it makes web pages so heavy. Doesn't there exist an alternative? I heard WebAssembly serves as one

About backend, wouldn't you be able to make polls and votes like more programmed, like actual buttons to press, if you had someone (or some team) to mess with backend code to incorporate stuff ? (I'm only learning C recently so I'm asking out of curiosity)
