Bulletins and News Discussion from May 13th to May 19th, 2024 - The Blazing Furnace - COTW: Vietnam

General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng implemented an anti-corruption campaign in 2016 called "blazing furnace" in shorthand. Since then, the fire has ripped through both politicians and businesses, up to even the Presidency. Nearly 200,000 party members, 36 Central Committee members, and 50 police/military generals have been disciplined since the initiative began. In 2018, Dinh La Thang, the former party chief of Ho Chi Minh City, became the first sitting Politburo member to be criminally charged, and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. In 2023, President Nguyễn Xuân Phúc was implicated in a corruption scandal and resigned. He was replaced by Võ Văn Thưởng, who was then also caught in a corruption scandal a year later in March 2024, making him the shortest serving President in Vietnamese history. The Presidency is current headed by Võ Thị Ánh Xuân while they find a new President; she also took that role in 2023.
The ousted leaders tend to also be part of the more West-friendly, technocratic faction inside Vietnam, either reflecting how these people also tend to be more easily corrupted, or how the Communist Party is slowly moving away from a foreign policy which allies itself with the West (as Vietnam has comprehensive strategic partnerships with several Western countries), or some combination. Of course, this shouldn't be overstated - Vietnam has maintained a close friendship with China for years, and both incumbent leaders are intimately familiar with anti-corruption campaigns and how and why they must be conducted in order to deliver maximum public benefit.
America clearly desires Vietnam to pick their side, because America strongly desires another vassal state in East Asia like the Philippines, South Korea, and Japan to further encircle and isolate China. And so the headlines and commentary of Western state propaganda like Radio Free Asia, the BBC, WaPo, Business Insider, etc reveal their increasing annoyance with Vietnam's government. They often couch this in the standard "objective" economics language); about how removing leaders who foreign investors were reassured by might mean economic pain for Vietnam ahead. As Bhadrakumar noted in 2023, perhaps the BBC revealed their intentions the best:
Reading Vietnamese politics is always difficult — the Communist Party makes its decisions behind closed doors. But hard-line General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, who was given an unprecedented third term at last year’s party congress, appears to be consolidating his authority by ousting senior officials seen as more pro-Western and pro-business. Officially this is all happening in the name of fighting corruption,.. but it’s indicative of a power struggle at the top of the party… the likely rise now of more security-focused officials to the top of the party will be bad news.
Even a quick google search right now will show a bunch of articles by clearly nervous Westerners: Why Vietnam’s Escalating Anti-Corruption Campaign Might Backfire because, as we all know, only authoritarian regimes are vulnerable to things like public opinion and discontent, while Western "democracies" are insulated from such petty phenomena. Leaders here can have disapproval ratings of 60-70% and not even the slightest consequence will happen to them - a real sign of democratic freedom and justice over those primitive regimes in the East! Or, take: ‘Blazing Furnace’ Turns Vietnam Into Another Chinese Province; China turning both Russia and Vietnam into their provinces in just two years was a real diplomatic masterclass. Or, back in 2022: Vietnam's 'blazing furnace' crackdown burns $40 bln off stocks. Not the stocks! Anything but the stocks!
If your actions as a leader are pissing off Bloomberg, you are going in the right direction.
The COTW (Country of the Week) label is designed to spur discussion and debate about a specific country every week in order to help the community gain greater understanding of the domestic situation of often-understudied nations. If you've wanted to talk about the country or share your experiences, but have never found a relevant place to do so, now is your chance! However, don't worry - this is still a general news megathread where you can post about ongoing events from any country.
The Country of the Week is Vietnam! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Not shocked that the media is now trying to push the narrative that Hamas is abandoning Gazans because they are no longer providing government services and are now focusing on insurgency. Where exactly would the political wing of Hamas provide services? Schools? Bombed out. Hospitals? Bombed out. Government buildings? Bombed out. They said that Hamas is willing to keep up the insurgency at any cost. Well yeah no shit, Israel is fucking carrying out a genocide against its people and shows no signs of slowing down.
Western dipshits give money to the Ukrainian government to finance the war effort -> The Ukrainian government decides to build fortifications similar to the Surovikin line -> They give money and contracts to random private companies that are supposed to build those fortifications -> Capitalism + Ukrainian corruption in action:
These concrete blocks were supposed to form lines of dragon teeth fortifications to stop Russian tanks. But some shitty corrupt company took the money, picked up these blocks, and just dropped them next to the street.
Multiple outlets reporting (I’m reading the Al-Jazeera live feed) and a spokesperson for the UN secretary-general has confirmed that Israel attacked a UN-marked vehicle on the way to the European Hospital in Gaza as a part of their duties. One UN staffer was killed and another injured.
I am 1,000% sure this is was intentional and retaliation for the UN vote last week. Death to “israel”.

It's darkly funny that Biden has decided to frame Chinese government support of its industries as "cheating." I guess the logic here is that because venal and arrogant American politicians decided to pursue stupid and short-sighted economic policies, it's against the rules for Chinese politicians to make good decisions for their country.
The US removed Cuba the list of countries not fully cooperating against terrorism, also known as the Not Fully Cooperating Countries (NFCC) list, State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel confirmed on Wednesday. Patel said that the circumstances leading to Cuba’s designation as an NFCC have changed since 2022.
The NFCC list is part of the State Department’s annual assessment of international cooperation in counterterrorism efforts, and countries on this list may face restrictions on certain types of aid and exports of defense-related goods and services.
Cuba was initially placed on the NFCC list in 2020 due to its refusal to collaborate with Colombia on extradition requests related to members of the National Liberation Army (Spanish: Ejército de Liberación Nacional, ELN), a designated terrorist organization. The Cuban government did not formally respond to the extradition requests for ELN leaders filed by Colombia after the group claimed responsibility for the 2019 bombing of a Bogotá police academy that killed 22 people and injured 87 others.
I just wanna take this moment to reiterate how fucking stupid the way the DSA delegation behaved towards Cuba was given that they're still helping leftist groups like this. Incredibly unserious people.

Even fuckin' Bill Burr dunks on by telling him (in the context of Maher shitting out nothing but Hasbara and State Dept nonsense):
[politics] isn't your thing. It's isn't. You're like that guy that has a fantasy football team and thinks he's a fucking GM. That's exactly what it is. Like, why am I fucking listening to you like you've done something? What have you done in Washington? Nothing.

I'm genuinely surprised by how there is no public outrage over the cops breaking into university campuses and beating students over protests, let alone when the National Guard participates. It's just so weird to me.
Why am I saying this? Because normally, universities have some sort of immunity against certain actions of the state. For example, in Argentina it is outright illegal for cops to be inside university grounds and university authorities cannot call on the cops to enter their building unless it's for some extreme situation like someone taking hostages, bomb threat, etc. There's a funny story that happened once where I study, a cop (off duty, but still in uniform) entered our university to take her girlfriend out as she left classes (I hope she found someone better, cops don't deserve love), immediately as he walked in students began to yell at the guy, telling him to fuck off and leave. He was forced out, students reacted like when your body reacts to a disease or something. Years ago, several schools and universities rebelled against the government's attempt to "centralize education" (cover up for some privatization) by taking their own universities and self-managing them. Despite the clear conflict, the cops were not able to set foot in the campuses, and when they did there was quite the outrage over it.
Back in Medieval times, when universities first appeared in E*rope, there was a big debate among the state and the scholars (members of the church all of them, basically) wether the university could be intervened or not. In Paris, the authorities tried to intervene on their university but the students and their teachers carried out what is known as literally the first student strike, they simply left the city and went to study and debate elsewhere, leaving Paris without it's prestigious institution for about 4 years. When they returned, the state pledged to respect the university's integrity, it's programs and whatever happens inside it's a matter of the students and the teachers. They gained an immunity, so important in medieval times.
Yet in the US it appears this traditional immunity doesn't exist, cuz the pigs can force their way into the campuses, destroy encampments and arrest everyone, and the public is absolutely content with this. The US is literally worse than medieval Paris ffs.
With this said, keep in mind that universities are definitely intervened by the state. Then, we can conclude that these education bodies are forced to become a grotesque servant of the state. It must be freed.
a result of an ongoing, sustained campaign of action targeting investors of Elbit Systems, investors have slashed their holdings in the zionist entity's largest weapon's company.
Scotiabank has cut its investment in Elbit from $402 million to $237 million, which previously represented 4.2% of Elbit's outstanding shares. Meanwhile, JP Morgan Chase has cut its investment in Elbit Systems by 70%, from $54 million to $16 million.
Since January, Elbit's stock has fallen by about 6%, while activists in Canada, Britain, and the US relentlessly targeted Scotiabank and JP Morgan Chase due to their investment in Elbit, affirming that their action will not stop until they #ShutElbitDown.
France has deployed army personnel at ports and the airport in New Caledonia, after banning TikTok and declaring a state of emergency, amid widespread riots.
Who are these entitled students to stomp all over the dream that school administrators of every level have been fighting toward for decades? Hold strong administration, your vision of a campus with no students, no teachers, only administrators. The perfect educational institution is just over the horizon!
Very interesting that Hamas has re-activated the fighting in northern Gaza after Israel committed to Rafah. Obviously it makes Israeli propaganda about "dismantling Hamas" very silly in retrospect but that's not the main reason to do it, I imagine. I suppose it's about forcing Israel to re-commit troops to the north and spread them thinner? Definitely shows that Hamas has retained its organizational and fighting capacity even as we're over eight months since October 7th, which is encouraging.
Reported acts of resistance by the communist Martyr Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades in Gaza today:
1- The engineering unit of the Martyr Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades was able to detonate an explosive device with a military vehicle of the occupation forces in a precise ambush on “Abu Al-Aish” Street in Jabalia Camp.
2- The sniper in the Martyr Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades was able to snipe and neutralize a Zionist soldier in the vicinity of “Abu Zaytoun” in Jabalia Camp in response to the occupation’s crimes against our people..
3- Our missile unit bombed the occupation forces at the Kerem Shalom site
The Friday walkout included more than 100 students, ages 11 to 14, from the district’s three middle schools, with marches to UC Berkeley’s Sproul Plaza to join Gaza protesters at their pro-Palestinian encampment. The walkout was not sanctioned by the schools or district, but students had support from parents and activists who accompanied them. While walkouts and protests have been common at high schools and colleges, they’ve been rarer at middle schools.
On their way to the university, some of the students encountered a resident on Rose Street who “held up her middle fingers at the kids,” Berkeley police said. An “unknown suspect” struck the woman with a cardboard sign and someone else threw water on her.
The incident was first reported by the Berkeley Scanner and the Jewish News of Northern California, which highlighted a video reportedly documenting the incident, showing the woman as she tells the students, “You don’t know history.”
I do kind of appreciate that Ryan Grim, when asking questions of the White House/State Dept. ghouls, has been using the phrase "Israeli Occupations Forces". And even while the replies are using their usual "But muh We'LL LooK iNTo iT" and "But muh IsRaEL aSSuReS uS" they seem to be neglecting to correct that and thus implicitly accepting the use of the phrase. That's some pretty good trolling, even if it's in the context of pretty weak "challenges" to the imperial propaganda machine from pretty liberal sources.

Comrades I need to talk Ukraine War with you otherwise I'm going to explode from the pure energy. My pregnant wife doesn't understand what's going on, my Dad thought that Russia already won and I even called my communist uncle to talk about Kharkov but his favorite news channel on Youtube hasn't talked about Ukraine since the fall of Avdeevka so he didn't have a clue about the situation.
So what's our analysis of this Kharkov offensive by Russia? Am I right when I say that this is the biggest overall development of the war since the Russian withdrawal from Kherson in November 2022? For people who have checked out of Russia-Ukraine news, here's a little breakdown:
Russia has crossed the Russia-Ukraine border north of Kharkov again after withdrawing from this region in September 2022. It has been successful so far, with numerous villages captured and some serious progress close to Volchansk and Lyptsi. Those two towns are pretty much the only places where Ukraine has built any serious fortifications, so if those towns fall soon, Russia can pretty much drive down to the outskirts of Kharkov, and more importantly, to Velykyi Burluk and Chuhuiv, which could collapse the entire Oskil river region for Ukraine. Ukraine has also panicked now and started sending units from other parts of the frontline, which has already caused small collapses east of Chasiv Yar, in the southern parts of Krasnogorovka and in central Klishchiivka.
Honestly this has been so exciting to follow, we're finally learning names of new places and the line moving is actually visible on a zoomed out map. The good part is that this move could make other stagnant parts of the line finally move. Will Russia move into Sumy? Or will they cross the border north of Kupiansk? Or do a daring cross-Dnieper assault on Kherson again? Or could they finally move in Zaporozhye? Thank you mr Putin for making things move again
Several top White House aides say they are confident protests across U.S. college campuses against Israel's offensive in Gaza will not translate into significantly fewer votes for Joe Biden in November's election, despite polls showing many Democrats are deeply unhappy about the U.S. president's policy on the war.
DESPITE POLLS
HAHAHAHA
DO IT YOU OLD FUCK! DOUBLE DOWN AND LOSE THE ELECTION! LET THE DEMENTED OLD MAN DIE IN IRRELEVANCE!

Strike against the University of California is on! 79% voted yes, with 19,780 voting!
This is structured as a "Stand Up Strike", in the vein as what was done with the recent auto strikes. Basically that means segments of the worker base are going to be called up to strike, with not everyone starting at once. In practical terms, that means one campuses are like, strike-ready, in terms of mobilizng people, they're getting activated. Likely UCLA and UCSD are going to be first, and rather fast to start. They experienced the big violence, and have the most momentum in strike organizing at the moment. But others are pretty ready too! Just doing some planning on the more like mundane part of planning, like local day to day stuff. Hopefully I'll get a chance to strike very soon.
There's around 50k workers in total, so a decent chunk didn't vote. To a degree that's expected though, as this was a fast turnaround event, and you're going to miss people either by not getting a chance to reach them, or them lacking interest. This was actually a very high turnout union election. And the bright side, the 'No' votes are probably all the dedicated Zionists and anti-labor types with enough energy to actually participate, with the larger population more like, open to being reached as things progress and it becomes more obvious that something is happening.
Israel's response at the ICJ was an interesting watch. The body language was like a kid who comes home after a fight at school, knowing the school is going to call your parents, jumping everytime the phone rings.
Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un Inspects Completed Central Cadres Training School of WPK
Pyongyang, May 16 (KCNA) -- In the historic period, when a new heyday of strengthening the whole Party is being ushered in under the five-point Party building line in the new era clarified by the great Comrade Kim Jong Un, the Central Cadres Training School of the Workers' Party of Korea, the highest institute of training Party cadres, has been successfully built as a model of Juche-oriented architecture and the education sector.
Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and president of the State Affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, gave field guidance at the school on May 15.
Accompanying him were secretaries of the WPK Central Committee.
He was greeted on the spot by officials of the design and construction units involved in the construction project.
Enjoying a panoramic view of the school, wonderfully built to mirror the valiant spirit and nature of the ever-victorious WPK and show its eternal rosy future, he said with great pleasure that the school looked majestic, and that the genuine model educational institution was built by our own efforts.
Going round the educational section, administration building, the general lecture room and multi-purpose lecture hall at the school building, conference hall, library, gymnasium, dormitory, dining hall and other parts of the school, he learned in detail about the fulfillment of the tasks he had given when inspecting it under construction on March 30.
He expressed great satisfaction over the fact that the officials and builders of the design and construction units properly rectified the problems, pointed out by him at that time, and carried out the final stage of construction in a qualitative way and at the highest level and thus made all the components of educational environment and conditions of the school flawless.
Noting that the structural characteristics of buildings were improved more rationally in keeping with the trend of modern education development and the pedagogical principles and the landscaping has been realized on a high level in conformity with the world standard, he said with pride that the Central Cadres Training School of the WPK is a perfect educational facility firmly ensuring the political principles, modernity and practicality and it created the highest standard for other educational institutions across the country.
Expressing expectation and belief that the school, wonderfully built as a political institution of the WPK representing the new era, would always remain faithful to its important and sacred mission of training the genuine backbone, the core Kimilsungists-Kimjongilists, and thus make a tangible contribution to strengthening and developing the WPK and its eternal prosperity, he gave instructions on making full preparations for its operation ahead of its opening ceremony and on organizing its inaugural ceremony in a great politically significant way. -0-
"The peace activists are war activists," Palantir's CEO told a room of government officials, military contractors, and tech bros. "We are the peace activists."
California Highway Patrol officers charged a man with multiple felonies after a drug-sniffing dog detected over 511 grams of fentanyl in his car during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 earlier this week. The quantity is enough to potentially kill 250,000 people, the agency said in a Facebook post Thursday.
Maybe this is why Israel has been bombing hospitals - those hospitals might have stocked painkillers that could have killed everyone in the entire region!
Our strike vote is starting today for UAW 4811, the grad student/student researcher union for the University of California system. For those unaware, this push started back after the raids on the UCLA encampment. It apparently gave the union enough cause to start this proceeding. Which is good! Likely the vote will go through, and then things will get spicy. The vote closes Wednesday afternoon.
On the downside, the highest level of the union leadership still has a bunch of collaborationist fuckers, so they undercut the total power of the strike before it started by declaring it a 'limited' strike, with a maximum deadline of June 30th. Obviously, presetting a deadline for your labor action isn't great. It also undercuts the threat of long term withholding of student grades, which would result in the academic machinery grinding to a halt. That said, it is at the very least past the deadline of the quarter's instruction.
The UC system is weird in that instead of semesters, we use quarters of the year, with a Fall, Winter, and Spring quarter of primary instruction, and then a summer quarter. That means that school goes way farther into May/June than pretty much everywhere else, so the campus won't be empty by any means, and there will be disrupted classes. There will be some form of material impact, and every bit helps I hope.
I was talking with someone, and they think that the University might just play nice and try to wait it out, but I'm really not sure about that. They were pretty chill, in terms of direct force at least, during on more "normal" strike about a year ago, but the harsh crackdowns of students literally just sitting around makes me think it might be different this time. I think it's possible that if our strike materializes, and it has actual material consequences, however mild, they might windmill slam that police brutality button. I feel kind of paranoid typing and talking about this lol. But regardless, I started stocking up on first aid supplies and some protective stuff. I don't know how far away we are from Kent State 2.0.
The US seems to be trying to more aggressively get China and other Russian Allies to stop helping Russia evade sanctions by threatening them with sanctions. The frustrating thing is that it seems to be working with more Chinese banks refusing Russian payments.
This is the Brown thing all over again isn't it? Disbanding an encampment over a vague promise to discuss the demands instead of actually fulfilling them? The organizers say that they are aware that this isn't a win for divestment but that it is a win for organizing and that they're going to continue the struggle "through other means"? I'm sure they mean what they say but this is just proving to colleges that vaguely promising "discussions" of divestment works to shut down encampments and I feel like other schools are going to start employing this tactic too now that Brown and Harvard have set an example.
Thousands of people took part in a rally in Dublin city centre on Saturday calling for an end to the violence in Gaza.
The event was organised by the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC), and was supported by more than 100 Irish civil society groups.
The group said the event was staged to call “for an end to Israel’s genocidal assault on the people of Gaza, and for the Irish Government to take action to hold Israel accountable”.
Protesters assembled at 1pm at the Garden of Remembrance on Parnell Square, before marching from there to Leinster House for a rally outside the Dáil. A number of speakers criticised the Government’s “empty words” on Israel following its actions in response to the October 7th attack by Hamas, and called for concrete sanctions against the state.
Those taking part in the rally carried flags, wore Palestinian attire, and chanted slogans including “free, free, Palestine” and “ceasefire now”.
Speakers include IPSC chairwoman Zoë Lawlor and Irish Palestinian Zak Hania, who was trapped in Gaza until recently.
France declared a state of emergency in its colony of New Caledonia after an anti-colonial uprising broke out there, killing and wounding. New Caledonia has long sought independence, hoping to support itself through mining.
France does not want to lose control over them, so it is increasing colonial oppression in New Caledonia, fearing that the ripples from the collapsing colonial empire in Africa will also affect French colonies in other regions of the world.
New Caledonia must be free and completely independent of France. The troops of the French colonialists must be expelled from the country. France's military bases must also be closed. The collaborators of the colonialists must be punished as traitors to the people of New Caledonia. The mineral wealth of New Caledonia must belong to the people.
Two IDF tanks killed five IDF soldiers and wounded seven more in a friendly fire incident on Wednesday when they fired on a forward IDF battalion headquarters in Jabalya in northern Gaza. The IDF cleared for publication on Thursday.
The tanks were said to be under extreme pressure from dozens of rocket-propelled grenade attacks in the area.
All openings to the tanks, including the canopy on the top, were ordered to be kept closed to avoid any hole or vulnerability to the RPG attacks.
This, in turn, limited the tank's visibility.
Does the IDF intend for their tanks to go into battle with all the hatches open for pleasant airflow and visibility??
Tank Unit 202 is a Haredi-integrated unit, and the soldiers said that they saw a potential threat emerge from the battalion headquarters, which was only 10-20 meters away from them.
Niger’s prime minister says the termination of military cooperation and bilateral relations between his country and the United States was due to American threats and Washington’s opposition to the African nation's partnership with Iran and Russia.
Underlining the US failure to combat terrorism in Niger and the Sahel region for a decade, Zeine said, “The Americans stayed on our soil, doing nothing while the terrorists killed people and burned towns. It is not a sign of friendship to come on our soil but let the terrorists attack us.”
Just want to underscore the level of heroism underway here: Sen. Tammy Duckworth has been working to evacuate Dr. Adam Hamawy (who saved her life after her helicopter crash) from the hospital the IDF is besieging and bombing. But he and his colleagues have insisted they not leave unless the IDF allows in a new rotation, otherwise the patients will all die and the IDF will overrun the hospital and leave it in ruins as they have done to every other hospital in Gaza.
Five staff were evacuated today but Hamawy refused to go, leaving his body on the line to defend and to treat his patients. He is effectively saying, if they are going to kill everyone in the hospital, they'll have to kill him too.
South Africa's ambassador to the Netherlands, urged the court to order "the immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of the Israeli army from the entire Gaza Strip.”
South Africa urged the United Nations' highest court on Thursday to issue an order to stop the Israeli attack on the city of Rafah as part of its case accusing Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
It said that the attack on Rafah "must be stopped" to ensure the survival of the Palestinian people.
Vusimuzi Madonsela, South Africa's ambassador to the Netherlands urged the court to order "the immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of the Israeli army from the entire Gaza Strip.”
The two-day hearings at the International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court, come after South Africa last week asked for additional emergency measures to protect Rafah. More than one million Palestinians have taken refuge in the southern Gaza City.
Israel, which has denounced South Africa's claim that it is violating the 1949 Genocide Convention as baseless, will respond on Friday. In previous filings it stressed it had stepped up efforts to get humanitarian aid into Gaza as the ICJ had ordered.
Last week, South Africa called for additional emergency measures to protect Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, where more than a million Palestinians are sheltering.
It also asked the court to issue an order to Israel to allow UN officials and organizations providing humanitarian aid, as well as journalists and investigators, to enter the Strip without hindrance. She added that Israel has so far been ignoring and violating the orders previously issued by the court.
“From the beginning, Israel’s intention has always been to destroy Palestinian life and wipe them (the Palestinians) off the face of the earth,” South African lawyer Thembeka Ngcukaitobi said. Rafah is the last place.
Yesterday, #Hezbollah recorded its greatest success since the beginning of the war and destroyed one of the most expensive and advanced defense systems. A #Hezbollah drone worth 20,000 shekels targeted a multi-billion project east of Tiberias yesterday
The occupation army announces that #Hezbollah targeted the Sky Dew balloon, the large surveillance balloon,at an air force base near Tiberias, which is of great importance for monitoring air threats in the north, especially drones.
The #Israeli Ministry of Defense boasted of the spy balloon's superior ability to monitor #Lebanon and #Syria. 24 hours later, #Hezbollah targeted the balloon with a suicide drone.
Israelis from the North are still displaced, and Israel has displayed quite literally zero ability to do anything about it. I'm gonna take an L here: I assumed that the Israeli military still had some vague vestiges of competency that would allow them to meaningfully attack Hezbollah and carry out at least an offensive by now, but no. They're really just fucked, entirely helpless to Hezbollah's many daily strikes.
The Gaza resistance is doing very well too. Lots of attacks reported and lots of daily casualties. The resistance hasn't degraded; it actually seems to have improved since the first days of the war. Plenty of attacks in northern Gaza too, so Hamas is still very much undefeated throughout Gaza despite the propaganda.
Defense Minister Gallant yesterday publically voiced that he opposes the plan for military rule over Gaza, instead wanting a new form of international rule to replace Hamas there. Presumably because he knows that a military occupation of Gaza is untenable and will lead to casualties that Israel cannot withstand for any length of time. An international coalition replacing Hamas is, of course, also not going to work. They'd still have to try and defeat Hamas to exert this plan. They're just trying to put the casualty load on other countries. I wonder if this stuff is designed busywork for the government employees at this point. Like, it's akin to a thinktank asking "When Ukraine conquers Belgorod, will the Ukrainians administer it or will a NATO coalition?" It's geopolitical fanfiction. It's a dude who peaked in high school obsessing over how cool and fit he was back then and assuming he's still just as fit despite being an ailing 40-something year old with double digit physical health problems. This ain't the 1990s anymore, motherfuckers.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid said yesterday: "'...relations with the US are collapsing, the middle class is collapsing, they have lost the north' and 'we will not win with this government'"
And Netanyahu is calling for the Palestinian Authority to be dismantled, which is akin to a dog begging for chocolate. There's a part of my brain that is wondering whether Netanyahu is really a secret comrade who also wants Israel to collapse. It takes genuine skill to be this incompetent, to the point where it's a little suspicious.
Just hearing not-yet confirmed reports of Ansar Allah possibly striking successfully
the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Mason (DDG-87) in the Red Sea. Folks keep eyes out for information as it rolls in.
Edit: Just an FYI there's no information on the matter out of the 5th Fleet that's stationed in the region on the question so we're currently working in an intelligence fog of war in this regard. Don't jump for victory or wonder in dread for the future just yet. Just keep waiting to see what's going on.
Edit 2: fun game for the mega to play, how many u.s wars were started over u s boats getting bombed or "bombed"
China is more likely to pursue a “short of war coercion campaign,” as we call it, centered on political and economic warfare accompanied by limited kinetic action than an invasion of Taiwan for three main reasons:
First, annexing Taiwan by means short of war significantly limits possible damage to other Chinese grand strategic objectives. The People’s Republic of China’s long-term strategic goals are to continue to build-up what it calls its comprehensive national power and become the world’s leading power. It then aims to decisively reshape international politics and place itself at the center. Although Chinese leader Xi Jinping clearly believes that unifying Taiwan with the mainland is a key component of this grand strategy, he may be loath to risk China’s march to geopolitical dominance by starting a full scale and likely global war.
Second, a short of war strategy centered on political warfare and limited kinetic action could be successful. Taiwan’s most recent elections highlighted deep domestic political divisions, coinciding with a rise in skepticism of America’s support. These sentiments are further reinforced by the fact that Taiwan remains internationally isolated. Taiwan status is sui generis in international affairs: it is a fully functioning nation-state not recognized by the international powers. This creates an opening for China’s manipulation of Taiwan’s understandable fears of abandonment.
Third, strategies short of war are consistent with Chinese strategic thinking and previous behavior. A number of Chinese warfighting concepts reference the utility of fighting wars using means beyond traditional applications of kinetic force. These concepts have been employed regularly in Chinese “gray zone operations” in the South and East China Seas and Taiwan Strait. Given their general success, China will likely intensify their employment in a campaign to annex Taiwan.
Ok so... Stupid language aside.
They'll apply pressure!
They'll do politics!
Nothing, this number is just here to write three things. Uhhh, they've done "no-war strategy" before? Yeah put that down.
TL;DR The Hill is saying China won't invade Taiwan now but they're doing it in the most insufferable way possible framing it in the most sinister way possible when it's just.... Politics? They're just saying that reunification will happen politically but they're using SHORT OF WAR and POLITICAL WARFARE and LIMITED KINETIC FORCE to frame it.
Putin confirms that there are currently no plans to capture Kharkiv city, which reinforces the buffer zone theory. "Nothing ever happens" gang stays winning.
There is a solidarity encampment set up at the University of Witswaterrand and naturally, all of the in and out of South Africa came to the realisation that the "American/Apartheid" method cannot be utilised.
There's also a Palestine rally in Tallinn again on the 1st of June.
Also two weeks until the elections in South Africa. Would be amusing if the African Christian Democratic Party website got deep-fried. Again.
Anyone seen that clip of Antony Blinken playing Neil Young's "Rocking In The Free World" on an electric guitar with a random Ukrainian band? The USA is really trying to do the whole "blue jeans and rock and roll revolution" propaganda again, three plus decades later.
Found some YouTube links for those that want to see
The French Empire has deployed its military to put down insurgents in the Pacific island of New Caledonia, which is near Australia!
And France has also banned TikTok in that island to hide human rights violations.
Blinken has arrived for a surprise visit to Kiev.
Things are definitely getting dicey. I'm not going to make any sweeping predictions, but the American brass is at least taking this offensive very seriously.
To rebuke the argument that Georgia's Foreign Agents Registration bill is necessary to prevent State Department NGOs from undermining Georgian sovereignty, the Foreign Ministers of Iceland and the Baltics have arrived in Tbilisi to participate in and encourage Georgia's color-revolution protests against the "Russia law"
In general it fucking sucks like always, stuffed with too much fluff and hot air and barely any actual substance, and generally points in the direction that they'll take the Joe Biden direction of "Nothing will fundamentally change" with regards to their incoherency, disunity, and fundamental rightist status quo. of course I'm more here to point out the funny stuff that I always love to point out any chance I get, and that's the fact that CPUSA can not help itself in being the tail that's pinned to the donkey. AKA they want to enshrine into their party, again, that all good communists must vote blue no matter who to defeat Trump and fascism at the ballot box!
Section 5. The 2024 elections
WHEREAS the 2024 elections, at the federal, state, and local levels, represent a pivotal juncture, a moment of crisis. The crisis we face features the threat of fascism, bellicose militarism, brutal racism, military assaults on immigrant workers, anti-human attacks on women, people of color, and LGBTQ people, and an unrelenting war on workers, and especially their unions. The crisis also includes existential attacks on our environment and smashing democratic structures, including the right to vote.
From the unified democrat-republican capitalist government, right?
Right?
WHEREAS the MAGA forces have put forward a dangerous fascist agenda outlined in their 2025 Project that seeks to cut support for public institutions, Social Security, SNAP, public education, healthcare, union rights, and democratic and civil rights. Defeating Trump alone is not enough. We must defend the Constitution and defeat MAGA candidates at all levels in the 2024 election.
AND HOW ARE YOU GOING TO ACCOMPLISH THAT?
WHEREAS the recent upsurge in labor militancy and the people’s movement has mobilized hundreds of thousands of people into action, resulting in significant victories such as union organizing drives, historic wins for labor by the UAW, Teamsters, SAG-AFTRA, the election of a progressive mayor in Chicago and Los Angeles, and the victory in Ohio to enshrine the right to reproductive healthcare into the state constitution. These, and many other recent examples, show that when we organize and fight back, we can win.
CPUSA: By "We" we of course mean to include ourselves in the accomplishments of other people whom we had nothing to do with.
WHEREAS growing working-class militancy and unity is decisive to defeat Trump, MAGA, and the extreme right at the ballot box in 2024. The Communist Party USA is part of, in the thick of, this deepening struggle. Communists are independent but in the mix of this exploding anti-extreme-right coalition.
"independent"
WHEREAS the corporate/financial extreme right and the extreme-right coalition have a strategy to disrupt, demoralize, and splinter the growing unity in the anti-fascist and people’s movement. Principled unity in action is an asset Communists bring to the table. Communists and our friends have a strategic role in building and maintaining unity within the anti-extreme-right coalition.
Here's a fun question. Who is the military-industrial complex siding with? lets take a look at which campaigns are the fine people of Lockheed Martin are pouring all their blood money into.
BOTH SIDES!
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that to defend the working class, people’s movement, and democracy, the Communist Party issues this urgent call to action to build a broad People’s Needs, Not MAGA Greed Campaign, an all-people’s front to win victory. We must go all out to support the all-people’s front for a maximum voter turnout on the critical issues affecting our lives.
Interesting wording here. They don't want to actually build anything, but are calling on someone else to actually put in the work of building an "all-people's front". Not even mentioning that they want this "all-people's front" to be explicitly used to vote . I think they're saying they want ACORN back but maybe without all the sexpestry.
THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Communist Party is committed to year-round organizing and mobilizing on the issues facing the working class, to build a broad-based grassroots movement on its behalf, and will encourage our members to work in their local communities with labor and other forces in targeted voter registration, education, and mobilization efforts, in support of the issues to help elect communist and progressive candidates, support voting rights for immigrants, and support progressive ballot initiatives. We call on our members to work on neighborhood-based canvassing and to get out the vote with labor and allies for the strongest pro-worker and progressive candidates at every level.
CPUSA has literally ran only one person back in 2022 since they were liquidated after the death of Gus Hall. This is also to include the fact that People's World, the mouthpiece of the party, has repeatedly condemned any progressive candidate that doesn't run with a blue D next to their name as fascist enablers and electoral spoilers. The only candidates they want people to vote for is whatever bog creature the DNC swamp coughs up.
THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a victory over rightwing candidates will be a decisive defeat for the corporate rightwing and fascist forces. This will help change the balance of forces and clear the way to change the direction of our nation–to slash the military budget, end the sending of weapons to Israel, tax the rich, win quality healthcare for all, strengthen the right to vote, strengthen union organizing rights, restore Roe v. Wade, and end police murder of unarmed people of color.
What the fuck was the 2020 election then? Where's the military budget slashing, the end of weapon shipments to Israel, taxes on the rich, universal healthcare, stronger voting rights, stronger labor rights, womens reproductive rights, and the cop fucking that we were supposed to see since 2020? How the fuck is any of that supposed to happen in 2024-48 when all of those were weakened steadily over 2020-24?
Fucking Liberals.
THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Communists will give full united support and participation in the broad front to defeat Trump, Trumpism, and the MAGA Republicans.
CPUSA party line is yet again officially going to be "Vote Blue No Matter Who!"

Fico’s assassination attempt fucking sucks man. The one good political change in Europe in the last 5 years and he just gets shot by some old reactionary fuck. Fico and his party was the only example in Europe of an anti-NATO leftist group. If Fico dies then all that’s left is fucking Orban. Grim
Real nice "pause". They can always find 1-20 billion a month of our taxes to go blow up shit that is no threat to us but when it comes to domestic improvements HOLD THE PHONE HOW ARE YOU GOING TO PAY FOR IT?!
South Africa is in the ICJ again, asking for more provisional measures against Israel. Can't wait for the court to do fuck all. It's being livestreamed in al jazeera
The authorities will also impose tougher sanctions against men who do not fulfill their obligations with the Army.
On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the law approved on May 8 by Parliament that allows certain categories of prisoners to sign contracts with the Army.
With the approval of this law, Ukraine seeks to increase the number of soldiers in its ranks to reduce the gap in personnel that separates its army from the Russian Armed Forces.
The regulations allow prisoners who wish to shorten their sentences if they sign a contract to enlist in the Ukrainian Army. Prisoners convicted of rape, double murder, political corruption or crimes against national security cannot benefit from this measure.
Ukraine is seeking to recruit more soldiers with several legislative initiatives, including a new mobilization law that will come into force on next Saturday.
The authorities also plan to impose tougher sanctions against men of military age who do not fulfill their obligations with the Army.
Previously, on Wednesday, visiting U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that his country will provide an additional US$2 billion in military aid for Ukraine.
The funding will be directed toward providing weapons for Ukraine in the near future. It wil also be used for purchasing weapons and investing in Ukraine's military-industrial sector.
Last month, the U.S. approved a long-delayed support package for Ukraine worth about US$61 billion. The package includes US$49.9 billion for military assistance.
The FARDC says that it foiled a coup by armed men that left two police officers and Christian Malanga, opposition leader of the United Congolese Party, dead in Kinshasa, DR Congo.
Taiwan’s parliament descended into a brawl on Friday just days before the inauguration of Lai Ching-te, the new president.
Politicians pushed, hit and tackled each other, clambering across tables as they swarmed around the speaker’s seat in the legislative chamber after tempers became heated in a bitter dispute about parliamentary reforms.
The argument broke out over a push by the main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), and its allies, to give parliament greater powers of scrutiny over the government.
This includes a controversial move to criminalise officials who are deemed to make false statements in parliament – a proposal which has been rejected by Mr Lai’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as “an unconstitutional abuse of power”.
The unruly scenes are likely to add to speculation that Mr Lai will face a tougher challenge than President Tsai Ing-wen, his predecessor, in gaining support for his legislative policies after he takes office.
...and remember everyone: every palestinian that dies is actually an actor and every baby pulled out of the rubble is a doll. Therefore, please vote Joe Biden to continue supplying 2,000 pound bombs to "Israel" and get over it!
Article in which the author accuses Biden of withholding information about Hamas leaders because he supports Hamas and wants a Palestine ruled by factions backed by Iran and the US
Israel’s plans for the “Day After” are clearly irrelevant, since Biden and his aides have formulated their own scenario: Hamas “technocrats”—i.e., the leadership in Doha—will constitute the Iranian-backed component in a Palestinian unity government in tandem with the U.S.-backed faction that now rules the West Bank, Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian Authority.
If Israel finishes off Hamas, the Biden administration’s efforts to complete Obama’s Middle East security architecture will collapse. From that perspective, Team Biden prefers to sacrifice Sinwar and save Obama’s most important strategic initiative, which aims to override the traditional U.S.-led order of the Middle East and give birth to a new and unholy anatomy, tying America to an anti-American terror-state that embodies Jew hatred.
Does anyone have a clear idea on how the populations of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, et all are pressuring their governments to do something? I know there is basically no freedom of expression or political activism in most MENA countries, but that's why I'm asking. Even if their leaders have gone full sellout to US / Zionist interests, the people definitely haven't. Erdoğan is a slimy fuck, but he's at least nominally answerable to the electorate. The Moroccan, Algerian, Jordanian etc leaders aren't. So are any of these populations trying to influence their governments? Protests? Disruptions? Some group of soldiers looking to depose Sisi? Are the authorities in all of these countries strong enough to just officially shrug their shoulders about the situation and clobber anyone who tries to speak up?
In Ukraine there is a massive concentration of ukrainian troops occurring in Kharkiv. I think they're preparing for another city defence. That or they're prepping an offensive.
Tens of thousands of people in the French overseas territory of New Caledonia have taken to the streets in protest of French President Emmanuel Macron’s plans to reform New Caledonia’s electoral system. At least eight pro-independence activists had already been arrested before being released under pressure from protesters.
The latest wave of protests comes as the French National Assembly in Paris again gave a green light for the proposed constitutional changes, which native pro-independence parties fear will significantly affect their representation.
Last week, the National Assembly law committee debated the proposed constitutional amendment’s value. The bill should be debated again today, with a vote scheduled for May 14.
This move would allow an additional 11,000 mostly non-Indigenous people to determine the future of the French overseas territory, where voices favoring independence have grown.
My understanding of the situation is that there is a large, indigenous-led, and somewhat leftist movement for independence on New Caledonia. In order to avoid further erosion of the French colonial empire, Macron is pushing for an expansion of the franchise to people who have only recently moved to New Caledonia (i.e. non-indigenous) who presumably are less supportive of independence.
They said the plot's aim was to destabilize Jordan, a country that could become a regional flashpoint in the Gaza crisis as it hosts a U.S. military base and shares borders with Israel as well as Syria and Iraq, both home to Iranian-backed militias.
I forget the twitter name, but I’ve been reading some analysis from a Vietnamese account. They gave some insights into the country’s dealings with Israel, primarily how Vietnam buys weapons from them because they’re one of the few countries that are willing to transfer technology to them, i.e. allows Vietnam to produce and modify the weapons domestically. They didn’t give too many details on how licensing worked or whether Israel receives any money from weapons modified by Vietnam, but the goal was self sufficiency which of course can’t happen if you’re reliant on westerners to give everything to you forever. And also how they’ve banned pro-Israeli content from the media lol.
A U.S. Navy ship participating in a military exercise in the Gulf of Guinea ran aground this week as it was leaving a port in West Africa.
The expeditionary sea base USS Hershel “Woody” Williams got stuck around 1 p.m. Thursday, shortly after leaving Libreville, Gabon, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa said Friday in a statement.
The ship broke free at about 5 p.m. Thursday at high tide, said Lt. Cmdr. Jason Tross, a spokesman for NAVEUR-AF.
The rise of multipolarity, in particular the strengthening of developing countries, is a process that is objectively occurring. Some countries are trying to fight this trend with hegemonism, masquerading their harmful politics under the guise of a "rules-based order". Russia and China want to use bilateral relations to build a more democratic world order.
No country should gain security at the expense of another country's security.
There are two fundamental principles that should be upheld. First, there should be no neo-colonialism nor hegemonism; countries should be able to freely pick whatever political, social, and economic systems they desire without pressure from outside, especially not sanctions. Second, the UN Charter should be the backbone of a multipolar world order.
Countries which are trying to exert hegemonism, provoking regional tensions, etc - that is, the United States - are bad, and are using a Cold War model for modern times. This endangers the security of everybody.
The United States is trying to exert military dominance everywhere via missile defense systems, various missile programs, military bases, submarine deals, etc. This is bad.
The United States is trying to contain both Russia and China in particular using the aforementioned tactics. This is very destabilizing and bad.
The United States should not use biological nor weapons in outer space to further exert military dominance. Those things should be off-limits to any country.
The United States is provoking the DPRK and trying to cause a new war on the Korean Peninsula. The United States should take responsibility for Afghanistan and help them, rather than sanction them.
Then there's all the cooperation stuff between Russia and China:
Deepening military cooperation, including joint air and naval patrols.
More bilateral trade and investments, including in shipbuilding, civilian aviation, cars, equipment manufacturing, electronics, metallurgy, mining, etc.
Deepening energy cooperation, including in nuclear energy, with the wider goal of keeping international energy stable.
Further usage of local currencies in bilateral trade, more banks and institutions in that regard, etc.
Education and scientific cooperation, study abroad programs, the teaching of each others' languages, etc.
Cooperation in mass media, basically just doing journalism better and at higher quality.
Cooperation inside various international organizations like the UN, World Health Organization, World Trade Organization, the SCO, BRICS, etc.
A 71-year-old man was immediately detained by Fico's bodyguards. According to multiple Slovak media outlets, the suspect is from Levice and possessed the firearm legally in connection with his private security job. He had authored three poetry books and founded a "Movement Against Violence".
Okay so apparently the Fico shooter is actually a huge nazi (with big scary ties to Russia), in one of his books intro he's crying about the "hundreds of thousands of gypsies who are a parasite on our social system", etc. etc.
Probably simply didn't like Fico (who is kind of a succdem but from his pov a scary communist) and decided to off him.
Okay so since there's a bit of confusion about this: The stuff that he's a liberal is made up, probably by gov sponsored media so they can smear the lib opposition, hungarian state media is blaring the same shit like that he was doing this because Fico wanted to subvert state media or some shit. the progressive liberals (aka liberals, the opposition) already said he was never a member.
Edit: There's apparently a video about him talking about how he wanted to off Fico for tampering with state media, i'm taking that with a grain of salt for now.
Edit 2: This is apparently him on a fash "migrant hunter" militia's memorial service for Jozef Tiso, the leader of the nazi regime during ww2 in slovakia.
the student protest media liason who got interviewed (but instead of quoting her at all the zionist reporter just said she "spoke with nuance") should have recorded the interview and released the audio and a transcript
It seems weird that one shot right to the Washington Post, which isn't typically how these things leak out. Bezos was in allegedly in the chat, but I don't know if WP would have done this if there was anything incriminating about Bezos.
I love this as a fan theory, I love the intrigue. You have a group of your competition willing to throw themselves on the pire in increasingly obviously ways. You sit on the chat and then once the damage is done blast that out from your own newspaper. Maybe he had beef the Kind bar guy. Maybe this ordeal is fucking with his portfolio overall. Maybe he just wanted to throw his weight around and knock the other reptilians down a few pegs.
“We’re continuing to work around the clock with the government of Israel and with the government of Egypt to work on this issue,” the State Department said.

Upward of 20 American doctors are trapped in Gaza as a result of Israel’s post-invasion closure of the Rafah border crossing into Egypt, according to sources with knowledge of the plight of two ill-fated medical missions.
For real though the dude did NOT look happy in the helicopter in footage before the crash... Not starting a conspiracy, probably he just did not like flying. Nightmare way to die.
The American ambassador to the Congo says his country has nothing to do with it.
The military of the Democratic Republic of Congo successfully thwarted a coup attempt aimed at seizing the Palace of the Nation and the residence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Vital Kamerhe, as reported by the country's national television RTNC.
Prompt action by the armed forces quickly restored public order, resulting in the detention of the rebels.
The coup attempt is linked to supporters of the "New Zaire" movement, led by Christian Malanga, who reportedly established a government in exile abroad.
According to the analytical project Atum Mundi, Malanga, who resided in the United States, allegedly participated in the attempt and was subsequently killed.
So I was leaving my university today when I heard some noise by the main entrance. When I got there I found a group of people waving palestinian flags and using a megaphone to shout different things like "Prison for the war criminal Netanyahu" and "Stop the Rafah offensive and the genocide". All cool, but then I saw one of the guys waving a Syrian Republic flag. No, not the one used today by the Ba'athists, the one used by the Free Syrian Army, green, white and black with three stars in the middle.
I thought it was weird like, why, why that flag?
Also remember the Free Syrian Army? I haven't heard that name in many years. The "moderate" rebels as they said.
Prime Minister Fico's condition is extremely serious, he is still undergoing surgery, said the head of the Slovak Ministry of Internal Affairs, Matus Shutai-Eshtok.
Earlier, Slovak media reported that the operation was over and the prime minister’s condition was stable.
The good thing about being a fucking nobody like himself is that I will never take an helicopter ride because that's reserved mostly for the rich or heads of state or whatever
so of all the things that could kill me, helicopter accident is very very down on the list.
In overcompensation by the US Air Force: They have given their F-15 jets, with a top speed of over Mach 2, official callsigns and confirmed air to air kills (the red missiles) for shooting down Iranian drones with a top speed of 120 miles per hour.
Thanks, , for helping me understand what the "the trains (and the genocide) ran on time" take of our current era is.
Since Oct 7, Biden has bypassed Congress at least three times to send large weapons
Unfortunately that's because the Republican Congress hasn't been doing fucking shit all year long. Someone has to sign off to keep things flowing.
Listen dude, I don't like biden and wish we had a 30 or 40-year-old president like the rest of the fucking world...
But biden's not a bad dude, He's literally just doing his job that most people are too incompetent to understand.
All Trump did this play golf and slow down the government.. At least biden is signing shit even if he disagrees with it to keep the government functioning and flowing.
How many government shutdowns have we had under Biden???
How many poor USDA milk corn and meat factory workers had to go without pay under Biden?
The Milei administation has created a crisis committee and pledged to send 200 military officers
Hundreds of teachers and police officers demanded pay raises outside a Misiones police building for the second straight day on Saturday, raising alarms in the national and provincial administrations. Some 2,000 demonstrators put up tents to cover themselves from the drizzle outside the police radio command in Posadas, the provincial capital. People and police cars were still pouring into the streets on Saturday afternoon. Less than a hundred meters away, teachers held a separate demonstration that included burning tires.
(More inside the spoiler)
spoiler
“You can see close to six hundred active [officers], some with their faces covered and some in uniforms — I counted 21 police cars and 30 other cars,” Pablo García, a journalist from the Info Tierra Colorada media outlet present at the protest, told the Herald. He added that retired police officers and their families also took part in the demonstration.
The national security ministry created a crisis committee to coordinate efforts with the provincial government. The ministry announced that the national government would send 200 military police to help quell the incidents. A spokesperson for the national Interior Ministry told the Herald that they are waiting for provincial governor Hugo Passalacqua to provide instructions as to how to proceed.
The mass demonstrations began after a group of teachers — who had been protesting for roughly a month — broke into the provincial legislature on Thursday. Close to 3:00 a.m. on Friday, police officers started arriving in squad cars and began burning tires in front of the radio command headquarters. They later gave the tires to the teachers, who used them for their protests.
Although some reports stated that protestors had seized the building, the police spokesperson showed the judge on duty, Ricardo Balor, that the protest was limited to the exterior and that the radio command was operating normally. The police are being represented in salary negotiations by retired officers since active officers are not allowed to form a union. Teachers, on the other hand, have had a plethora of unions, but most of them are under an independent group with no legal representation. According to García, the police are not on strike as officers are still on duty in the rest of the city.
“More than salaries”
Teachers and police are demanding a 100% pay raise, claiming that they have lost more than 50% of their purchasing power in the last eight months due to inflation rates. The Misiones government announced a 15% raise for the police, meaning monthly salaries of AR$467,759 (US$494) for officers and AR$558,778 (US$617) for sergeants. According to Misiones teachers, they are the worst-paid in the country, amid rampant inflation that reached a 280% interannual rate in April. “A new teacher in the province is currently earning around AR$240,000 (US$254 at the official exchange rate) [a month]; those with the highest seniority earn AR$394,000 (US$416),” he said in an interview with the AnRed media outlet.
The situation has worsened since the national government eliminated certain transfers to provinces. Among those benefits is the Teachers’ Incentive National Fund (FONID, in Spanish), which was used to pay part of the teachers’ salaries. However, Passalaqua is still close to Javier Milei. After meeting with Interior Minister Guillermo Francos in April, the deputies that responded to him voted in favor of Milei’s omnibus bill. “We will help to the extent that they help the people from Misiones, mutual governance. Quid pro quo,” Passalaqua said at the time to the La Nación newspaper.
García said he did not think the conflict would end soon, stating that the protest goes “beyond salaries.” The police spokesperson, for instance, is demanding an “amnesty” for officers involved in the protests, given that they would face disciplinary measures because they cannot legally hold demonstrations.
As for teachers, he said that they “are coming from various points of the province.” “They say that schools that don’t have toilets or fans, that they have stopped serving breakfast [for students in need] or paying janitors,” he said. “Fundamental issues are being discussed.”
So, pigs are revolting in the province of Misiones, which borders Paraguay to the west and Brasil to the north and east. Usually, you don't want your little pigs to protest (let alone strike) because you know, that's a big issue, as these people are armed, they have military-like cohesion and have training. So you'd want to fix this issue ASAP. But in the anpcap wonderland that is Argentina, none of this happens. And the Ministry of Security answers by sending a force of militarized police to confront the local pigs. So pig-on-pig violence might be happening soon, I'm just gonna
As for the teachers, power to them. And I hope this Gendarmería force arriving at the province isn't meant for them.
Now, these pigs and literally fuck off and die, even though they joined the teacher's protest if they get a raise sooner than later they'll be smashing their heads at the orders of their governor. So fuck them. Also, police from the northern provinces are known for being notoriously bad (surprise, I know), not only they have shit training (some officers are even illiterate) but they're also ridiculously corrupt, like officers actively engaging in drug trafficking and human trafficking (especially women, and you know where that ends) activities, let alone tortures and disappearances, so they can fuck off and die a horrible death.
not sure if he's confirmed 100% dead but the language coming out of the media is getting increasingly dire so I think I'm erring on the side of it.
obviously uh, Not Good, but I don't think this dramatically affects Israel/Palestine at least. Qassam Soleimani being killed was a tragedy for example but his life's work was still put in motion
generally I don't think it's possible to wipe out even a couple very important people and have the trajectory of the country meaningfully changed, and the Resistance seems, to me at least, to have created institutions and chains of commands that are insulated against assassinations, so Iran is... probably still coming out of this conflict quite well? Khamenei's still alive, at least. all we have to hope for is that this doesn't let the reformists gain a foothold.
and to be honest I think the same is true for Israel. if Netanyahu had a similar accident then it might be slightly different due to the fragmenting parties and his current unpopularity but the war and genocide wouldn't stop just because a couple important Israels had a helicopter crash
Iran’s aviation industry has had a horrendous record and that’s in part due to the fact that they can’t get the equipment they need to service their planes.
There have been sanctions in some form against Iran since the revolution in 1979.
Nearly 2,000 Iranians have lost their lives in plane crashes since 1979 and accidents involving Iranian airlines over that 44-year period have resulted in 1,755 casualties.
It shows that aviation in Iran is not particularly safe and part of that is the fact that they cannot get the parts, the aircraft and the equipment that other countries would just buy; they can’t do it, they’re not allowed to.
MADRID, May 19 (Reuters) - Spain recalled its ambassador to Buenos Aires for consultations on Sunday after Argentina's President Javier Milei made derogatory comments about Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's wife during a far-right rally in Madrid. Milei had called Sanchez's wife Begona Gomez "corrupt" during a rally in Madrid organised by the far-right Vox party and attended by many of its international allies.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said he expected an apology from Milei. Other ministers also condemned Milei's speech, in which he described socialism as "cursed and carcinogenic". Sanchez leads Spain's Socialist Party. "With his behaviour, Milei has brought the relationship between Spain and Argentina to its most serious state in recent history," Albares said in a video statement.
Milei's visit broke with diplomatic protocol as he refused to meet Spain's King Felipe and Sanchez, instead preferring to promote his book alongside Vox leader Santiago Abascal at the party rally. The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said in a post on social messaging app X that "attacks against family members of political leaders have no place in our culture".
Spain's main opposition party, the conservative People's Party (PP), refused to support Madrid's stance, with party sources saying that Sanchez should have provided explanations about the alleged corruption case weeks ago. "His silence generates internal doubts, but also distrust abroad," a PP source said, adding that the party's job was to oppose the Spanish government and not Milei.
A city court said in April it was looking into accusations of influence peddling and business corruption against Sanchez's wife, brought in a private complaint by Manos Limpias, or Clean Hands, an anti-corruption activist group. However, Madrid's prosecuting authority later said it was appealing to have the case thrown out for lack of evidence.
Sanchez decided to stay in office after five days of weighing his future once the probe against his wife was announced.
milei going to a far right rally? B...b...but I thou..thought libertarians were pro-freedom or something.
In other news my twitter feed has been completely coopted by pro-milei and general far right posts. Like from one day to the other I went from having posts from accounts like smol silly cat, Vijay Prashad and zei_squirrel (in other words, accounts I follow) to full posts from milei, his paid trolls, vox supporters, chuds and far right media. I don't even follow none of these accounts nor see what they post, it was okay until yesterday. So twitter can fuck off and die and elon too.

The Justice Department on Thursday announced the arrests of three people in a complex stolen identity scheme that officials say generates enormous proceeds for the North Korean government, including for its weapons program.
The scheme involves thousands of North Korean information technology workers who prosecutors say are dispatched by the government to live abroad and who rely on the stolen identities of Americans to obtain remote employment at U.S.-based Fortune 500 companies, jobs that give them access to sensitive corporate data and lucrative paychecks.
The fraud is a way for heavily sanctioned North Korea, which is cut off from the U.S. financial system, to take advantage of a “toxic brew” of converging factors, including high-tech labor shortage in the U.S. and the proliferation of remote telework, Marshall Miller, the Justice Department’s principal associate deputy attorney general, said in an interview.
The Justice Department says the cases are part of a broader strategy to not only prosecute individuals who enable the fraud but also to build partnerships with other countries and to warn private-sector companies of the need to be vigilant about the people they’re hiring. FBI and Justice Department officials launched an initiative in March and last year announced the seizure of website domains used by North Korean IT workers.
“More and more often, compliance programs at American companies and organizations are on the front lines of protecting our national security,” “Corporate compliance and national security are now intertwined like never before.”
The Justice Department says the conspiracy has affected more than 300 companies — including a high-end retail chain and “premier Silicon Valley technology company” — and generated more than $6.8 million in revenue for the workers, who are based outside of the U.S., including in China and Russia.
The three people arrested include an Arizona woman, Christina Marie Chapman, who prosecutors say facilitated the scheme by helping the workers obtain and validate stolen identities, receiving laptops from U.S. companies who thought they were sending the devices to legitimate employees and helping the workers connect remotely to the company.
According to the indictment, Chapman ran more than one “laptop farm” where U.S. companies sent computers and paychecks to IT workers they did not realize were overseas.
At Chapman’s laptop farms, she allegedly connected overseas IT workers who logged in remotely to company networks so it appeared the logins were coming from the United States. She also is alleged to have received paychecks for the overseas IT workers at her home, forging the beneficiaries’ signatures for transfer abroad and enriching herself by charging monthly fees.
The other two defendants include a Ukrainian man, Oleksandr Didenko, who prosecutors say created fake accounts at job search platforms and was arrested in Poland last week, and a Vietnamese national, Minh Phuong Vong, who was arrested Thursday in Maryland on charges of fraudulently obtaining a job at a U.S. company that was actually performed by remote workers who posed as him and were based overseas.
It was not immediately clear if any of the three had lawyers.
Separately, the State Department said it was offering a reward for information about certain North Korean IT workers who officials say were assisted by Chapman.
And the FBI, which conducted the investigations, issued a public service announcement that warned companies about the scheme, encouraging them to implement identity verification standards through the hiring process and to educate human resources staff and hiring managers about the threat.
Locals say the real estate industry is using organized crime, intimidation and even arson to clear the way for profits.
Like a 68-story glass-clad monument to imperialism, the Mítikah tower is now the tallest building in Mexico City. Operating since 2022, it was designed and built by U.S. and Mexican real estate and architecture companies, including Fibra Uno, Parks Hospitality Holdings and Pelli Clarke & Partners. It is the biggest shopping complex in the city and also features residential and office spaces. By not recognizing locals as original peoples with Teotihuacan descendancy, authorities were able to avoid the legally required consultation before approving its construction. Now, water — a scarce resource in Mexico City — is being redirected to the luxury building, while locals are left without.
Avoiding community consultation is just one of the strategies real estate companies are using to build and profit, while displacing people and destroying environments throughout Mexico. These corporations are using a combination of corruption, ties with organized crime, intimidation tactics, forced evictions and some allege arson, to clear the way for them to build their empires.

"The politicians are now calling for trade restrictions on Chinese car manufacturers. This is an absurdity," BMW CEO Zipse said.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson have cautioned against tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) following Washington's announcement of hefty levies.
Scholz and Kristersson expressed reservations about possible European tariffs on Chinese EVs when asked at a press conference whether they support the EU to follow suit.
On Tuesday, the United States announced new tariffs on a variety of imports from China, including EVs, in addition to existing tariffs under Section 301. The additional levy will raise tariffs on Chinese EV imports to 100 percent this year. Last October, the European Commission launched an anti-subsidy investigation into the imports of EVs from China.
"50 percent of electric car imports from China come from Western brands that produce cars there and, in that regard, that's maybe a difference compared to North America. There is an exchange from both sides. European and even some North American manufacturers are successful on the Chinese market, and we have to take that into account," said Scholz, stressing the importance of trade between the West and China.
"When it comes to import duties, I think that we (Sweden and Germany) essentially have a consensus that it is a bad idea to start dismantling global trade. A broader trade war where we stop each other's products is, in principle, not the future for large industrialized countries like Germany and Sweden," said Kristersson.
Around 20 percent of all-electric cars sold across the EU last year, or 300,000 units, were made in China. More than half of them come from Western carmakers, such as Tesla, Dacia and BMW, which produce them in China for export. Major German carmakers also signaled opposition to the possible tariff increases.
"The politicians are now calling for trade restrictions on Chinese car manufacturers. This is an absurdity," BMW CEO Oliver Zipse told German media Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Proposing restrictions on EVs shows a sign of short-sightedness, as it risks incurring countermeasures from the trading partner, leading to a more difficult availability of essential raw materials for European EVs, said Zipse, warning that European carmakers should refrain from repeating past mistakes in the auto industry.
"The European market previously feared the Japanese flooding with cheap cars, then the Korean. And now it is the Chinese," he said, stressing that the European market is not "flooded" with cheap Chinese electric cars, which only have a share of 0.8 percent in Germany.
Zipse warned against superficial statistics. For example, around 20 percent of EVs in Europe were imported from China last year, while "more than half did not come from Chinese companies at all."
Regarding the EU's anti-subsidy investigation on Chinese EVs, Hildegard Mueller, president of the German Association of the Automotive Industry, said that new tariffs and barriers were not the right way forward.
"We believe that building up new tariffs and sliding into mutual protectionism is the wrong way to go. Rather, we need to talk to each other so that it is equally possible for companies in both countries to approach mutually, produce there and sell there," he pointed out.

It’s a few days old but I didn’t see it posted yet… but Yves has a really good analysis of the Israeli economic situation. I’ll try and hit some of the highlights below:
The occupation of Palestine is an exploitative endeavor. That plan was summarized by Moshe Dayan, Israel’s defense minister during the June 1967 war, which resulted in the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, describing the territories as: “…a supplementary market for Israeli goods and services on the one hand, and a source of factors of production, especially unskilled labor, for the Israeli economy on the other.”
Colonialism 101
There are more than 200,000 Palestinian laborers, including those without permits, who work inside Israel and the occupied West Bank. Netanyahu’s government has resolved to replace them with other laborers who can be exploited – a massive proposed influx from countries like India and Sri Lanka.
Israel realizes how important super-exploited Palestinian labor is, but we’re also at a stage of fascism where they may simply not allow any Palestinian workers back in. And if you think the racist af Israeli society is gonna be cool with a few hundred thousand Indian or Bangladeshi workers showing up all of the sudden, well… I don’t see that happening. Will be fascinating to see how this contradiction plays out.
Along with exploiting Palestinian labor, Israel tests out surveillance, population control, and military technology on the captive population… [Antony Loewenstein’s] book, “The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation Around the World”, which was published in May 2023, details how Israel sells its technology and weapons all over the world (about 130 countries in 2021) in order to support its economy and curry favor from other nations that will help it continue to deflect criticism from its treatment of Palestinians. Israel benefits from having a captive population on whom to constantly test its weapons and surveillance technology.
The surveillance and defense industries are a big driver of the Israeli economy, but hopefully Oct 7 put a long term dent in their reputation.
There are economic goals to Israel’s current policy in Gaza. If we’re talking about plunder, we cannot forget that there’s a modern colonial twist of beachfront condos to consider.
Yves is of course correct here, that eventually Israel wants to own all of Gaza and exploit it both for the real estate aspects and the offshore gas. But I happen to that that’s more of the long term plan, I think their current focus is to slowly take over the West Bank first and then move on to Gaza.
🔴 Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine:

The BDS National Committee's Statement on Armed Resistance Contradicts Our People's Legitimacy in Practicing Resistance and Ignores Consensus
We in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine reject the call made in the statement and appreciate all the positions, forces, and individuals expressing their support for Palestinian resistance in facing the genocidal and colonial zionist war.
The Front considers that clearly expressing support for our people's right in Gaza does not contradict the call to end the genocide and support resistance in all its forms, including revolutionary armed struggle.
The Front noted that boycott committees spread worldwide, especially in Europe and the Americas, are a broad movement involving all Palestinian institutions, supporters of the Palestinian people, and solidarity committees. They are not linked to the BNC in Ramallah and do not take orders or decisions from it.
The Front emphasized that the justifications of the BNC in Ramallah and its call for silence on armed resistance in Western countries are inaccurate positions and far from reality, because the Palestinian presence and solidarity movements with the Palestinian people are all targeted by the allies of the zionist entity, accused of "anti-Semitism" regardless of whether they adopt this slogan or that.
The Front concluded its statement by noting that attempts by some parties to neutralize the adherence to the slogan of armed resistance weaken the Palestinian national struggle and the legitimacy of armed resistance fighting on the soil of the homeland. It ignores the support and consensus of millions of supporters worldwide for this struggle, method, and slogan. Palestinian armed resistance and resistance factions in the region have become an icon and source of inspiration for all free people globally. The slogan "From the river to the sea... Palestine will be free" has become the central slogan echoed by revolutionaries worldwide.

This just in: John Meearsheimer does, in fact, have a soul. Good to know. Maybe he can be convinced to quit saying the U.S. not only can but should go after China next.
Anyway, it's interesting that he just considers the fight in Palestine to be an internal conflict other than U.S./Western support, and ignores the dynamics that have been going on with Hezbollah, Yemen, Iran, etc.
The Bilche-Volitsa gas compressor station played a key role in ensuring gas supply not only to Ukraine, but also to other European countries. Its capacity made it possible to transport significant volumes of natural gas, which made it a strategically important facility in the region’s energy infrastructure.
The attack on the station took place at night. The damage was significant, and restoring the station will require significant time and financial costs.
All main buildings, main control room (management), SERB (operation and equipment), administrative building, entrance (security alarm), gas pumping unit (very significant damage) were destroyed. Worn-out gas pipelines remain in stock.
The exact location of the helicopter crash has been identified. A signal has been received from the helicopter and the mobile phone of one of the crew at the accident site
Genuine question: is there any reason for Zelensky to travel the world while being invaded? I don’t know enough about the personal affairs of historic war time leaders to compare, but it seems odd that he’s traveling to other continents, not to militarily strategize with allied commanders, but to just give speeches and beg for diplomatic support lol. He’s also doing that in countries that already give him material and diplomatic support so I don’t understand what the point is
Interior Minister Vahidi: We have not yet reached the point of the accident
"After the accident, all the forces were mobilized for the president's helicopter, all groups, including the IRGC, the army, Faraja, the Red Crescent, popular forces and all the villagers, spontaneously and with interest, are looking to find the place where the president's helicopter happened."
Fico's assassin is Juraj Cintula, a member of the liberal party.
Late on Wednesday afternoon (15/05), the Slovak police released the identity of the perpetrator of the attack on the country's prime minister, Robert Fico.
He is the 71-year-old writer Juraj Cintula, known in his country for being an anti-Russian political activist linked to the Progressive Slovakia party.
According to the local press, the perpetrator of the attack is known for his criticism of Fico's government, which he said was "distancing Slovakia from the West and Europe".
The Slovak Prime Minister was the target of a shooting attack on Wednesday, after leaving a ministerial meeting in Bratislava, the country's capital. According to the local press, he remains in hospital in a very serious condition, having been shot in the chest and abdomen.
"Rescuers yet to make contact with helicopter convoy... Iran's interior minister says rescuers are still trying to reach the site, but their efforts are being hampered by poor weather conditions "
There's not a chance in hell he survived. He's GONE.
SHOIGU. GERASIMOV. WHERE'S THE FUCKING HELICOPTER?
Never get into a helicopter under any circumstances unless you have accepted your soon-to-be death.
The media is actively useless at reporting for big, sudden events like these and misinformation/disinformation is the default state; just touch grass for like 8-12 hours after you hear that something big is happening. The Iranian drone strike being exaggerated/misunderstood; Prigozhin and his fun adventure in Russia; and now this crash. All of it is a clusterfuck of rumors and images from 2019 and so on.
I'm sticking to long-term analysis, there's nothing productive in engaging in speculation which will be answered anyway in the coming hours and days unless there's actual knowledge to be gained from talking with an expert about possibilities. The Official 72 Trillion Vibes-Based No Investigation No Right To Speak But I'm Speaking Anyway Prediction is that the broader situation in Western Asia is pretty much unchanged and we're still in the same paradigm of Israeli defeat/Resistance ascendence.
The Bass break-in 100% reads like some CIA mind control gone mad.
This CNN article makes sure to include shit like this to keep my conspiracy brain on full blast:
The break-in happened on the morning of April 21, during the security officers’ morning shift change when there was a “short gap” of time when an officer was not on the property, Los Angeles Police Chief Dominic Choi said Tuesday. Police have remedied the scheduling gap with an overlap in shifts, he said.
According to Iranian law, in the event of the president's death, the first vice president (currently Muhammad Mukhbar) temporarily replaces him, and election must be conducted within six months
A fun little exchange from a recent mainstream radio interview with a somewhat prominent politician from the coalition currently in power in Poland:
Interviewer: Another question from the audience… do intelligence agencies from countries other than Russia and Belarus operate in Poland?
Politician: There are agencies who are interested in specific regions/directions and there are other agencies who are interested in the whole world. So we can expect those from the latter group to operate here as well.
Interviewer: For example the Chinese?
Politician: Your are on the right track.
Interviewer: And the Americans? The British? The Germans? Our allies… are they also operating here or not?
Politician: They are in communication with us and are receiving information from us that is important from a security standpoint, and our agencies also receive such information from them.
Interviewer: Information is one thing, that’s an official exchange, but are they also spying on us?
Politician: We have rules that together as part of the pact we don’t do such activities to each other, but as history with Germany shows (I'm assuming he's talking about the US bugging Angela Merkel's phone here), it can vary in reality.
Interviewer: … and also the history of US-Israeli intelligence cooperation.
Politician: Also that, but I’m not worried about the allied agencies because even if they were to find something, they would let us know about it.
Interviewer: Are you sure about that? Because I’m not… No agency likes to share information, especially if it’s compromising to polish politicians, and the information they find may be of that nature.
Politician: Well... in that case every politician has to make a judgement of their own conscience… how their behavior can influence the situation in the country.
Is it fair to compare Biden vs Trump as the vote between war with Russia vs. war with China? (i.e. each candidate representing a different faction of hawks)
Feel free to post or recommend any books, essays, studies, articles, and even stories related to Vietnam.
If you know a lot about the country and want to share your knowledge and opinions, here are some questions to get you started if you wish:
What is the general ideology of the political elite? Do they tend to be protectionist nationalists, or are they more free trade globalists? Are they compradors put there by foreign powers? Are they socialists with wide support by the population?
What are the most important domestic political issues that make the country different from other places in the region or world? Are there any peculiar problems that have continued existing despite years or decades with different parties?
Is the country generally stable? Are there large daily protests or are things calm on average? Is the ruling party/coalition generally harmonious or are there frequent arguments or even threats?
Is there a particular country to which this country has a very impactful relationship over the years, for good or bad reasons? Which one, and why?
What are the political factions in the country? What are the major parties, and what segments of the country do they attract?
Are there any smaller parties that nonetheless have had significant influence? Are there notable separatist movements?
How socially progressive or conservative is the country generally? To what degree is there equality between men and women, as well as different races and ethnic groups? Are LGBTQIA+ rights protected?
Give a basic overview of the last 50 or 100 years. What's the historical trend of politics, the economy, social issues, etc - rise or decline? Were they always independent or were they once occupied, and how have things been since independence if applicable?
If you want, go even further back in history. Were there any kingdoms or empires that once governed the area?
Another military industrial grift is publicly declared dead after nearly a decade of siphoning tax dollars. If it wasn't for the fact that its just a naked cash grab, I would wonder why the fuck would the military waste money on trying to strap freakin' lazer beams to jets do they can theoretically melt holes in ballistic missiles before they take off.
Another Dead End for Airborne Lasers: Air Force Scraps Effort to Mount Directed-Energy Weapon on Fighter Jet
After years in development, the U.S. military's latest attempt at an airborne laser weapon to protect troops on the ground from incoming ballistic missiles appears to be headed for the scrapyard.
The same place where they dug up the idea I'm the first place
Initiated in 2016, the Self-Protect High-Energy Laser Demonstrator, or SHiELD, was envisioned as a laser weapon mounted on fighter jets such as the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II that would neutralize incoming air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles, as well as ballistic missiles potentially targeting U.S. forces abroad, according to a 2023
Whoever comes up with these acronyms should be shot out of a circus cannon straight into a piranha tank.
Congressional Research Service report.
The Air Force had planned on the SHiELD system taking flight for airborne testing aboard an F-15 Eagle some time in fiscal 2024. The service had already reported a successful ground-based shootdown of test missiles and taken receipt of the laser weapon system and pod subsystem in recent years. But any plans to complete the weapon and put it into operation now appear to have been abandoned, according to service officials.
Ground-based as in they can have it plugged into an outlet to power it. And by "test missiles" it's whatever trash that's in the u.s arsenal, so not really that impressive.
"The SHiELD program has concluded, and there are no plans for further testing and evaluation," Dr. Ted Ortiz, SHiELD program manager at the Air Force Research Laboratory's Directed Energy Directorate, told Military.com in an email. "The Air Force has not installed a laser pod on a fighter jet test bed."
The grift is complete. We finished what we were paid to do.
SHiELD is the second airborne laser weapon effort that the Air Force has scrapped in recent months. In March, Air Force Special Operations Command revealed that it had abandoned plans to mount an Airborne High Energy Laser system, or AHEL, on a AC-130J Ghostrider gunship, citing "technical challenges" even with "significant end-to-end, high-power operation" during ground tests.
See? A complete grift! Everyone already knew theres no way to power the damn thing so why bother wasting money to find out its impossible.
Despite that, Air Force officials remain bullish on the potential for airborne laser weapons to reshape the battlefield.
Chair Force officials who's only contact with the air is their big fucking heads in the clouds
"Through SHiELD and related efforts, [the Air Force Research Laboratory] has made significant advances in the readiness of airborne [high-energy laser] technology, and we continue to mature airborne HEL weapons technology for the operational needs of today and tomorrow," Ortiz said.
News of the SHiELD program's conclusion comes as the Defense Department seeks to bolster air defenses for U.S. troops deployed overseas as the threat of adversary missile attacks has grown.
Fucking jackasses, what are you gonna do, build nuclear reactors everywhere you invade so you can power your shitty flashlights?
Wait don't answer that
Iran conducted the largest ballistic missile attack on American forces abroad ever in January 2020 in response to the U.S. assassination of top Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Gen. Qasem Soleimani, resulting in traumatic brain injuries among at least 110 service members.
AND ZERO DEATHS BECAUSE IRAN WAS DEMONSTRATING IT CAN AND WILL BUTCHER OUR ENTIRE MILITARY PRESENCE ACROSS THE MIDDLE EAST WITH EASE
Also your brain injuries are gonna be registered as non-service related, so get fucked troops.
In recent months, Iran-backed militias have been taking potshots at U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria and at Navy warships in the Red Sea in response to Israel's military campaign in Gaza, resulting in even more TBI diagnoses among U.S. troops.
That can easily end as soon as the genocide ends. Blame Biden if you get blasted by Iran.
With drone and missile attacks on the rise, the Pentagon has increasingly eyed directed-energy weapons such as lasers and high-powered microwaves that, with a low cost-per-shot and a virtually unlimited magazine, could eventually provide efficient low-cost alternatives to existing -- and costly -- air defense systems such as the $125,000-a-pop Coyote interceptor or the $2 million-a-shot, ship-launched Standard Missile-2.
Except it's not low cost because no-fucking-where has the energy infrastructure or capacity to use the shit, not here at home and most sure as shit nowhere there's American boots on the ground.
To that end, the Army recently deployed a pair of ground-based laser weapons overseas to help counter incoming drones and is investing heavily in the development of more powerful systems designed to counter even fast-moving cruise missiles. Meanwhile, the Pentagon is spending around $1 billion per year on at least 31 directed-energy programs, according to C4ISRNet.
GRIFT GRIFT GRIFT GRIFT GRIFT
Deploying airborne laser weapons for missile defense has been a goal since the Air Force's Boeing 747-based YAL-1 Airborne Laser Test Bed knocked ballistic missiles out of the sky during testing in the 2000s.
SHITTY U.S MISSILES
Even before the uptick in missile attacks on U.S. troops, the Pentagon's 2019 Missile Defense Review suggested that "developing scalable, efficient, and compact high-energy laser technology holds the potential to provide a future cost-effective capability to destroy boosting missiles in the early part of the trajectory," and that mounting laser weapons aboard unmanned aerial vehicles could prove an effective countermeasure to ballistic missiles such as those in Russia and China's arsenals.
GRIFTERS
But developing effective and reliable airborne laser weapons has proven challenging compared to their ground vehicle- and warship-based counterparts, as former Pentagon research and engineering chief Mike Griffin detailed in 2020, according to Breaking Defense.
BECAUSE ITS FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE UNLESS YOU BUILD FLYING NUCLEAR REACTORS
The first problem is power generation. Lasers require a significant amount of power to produce their destructive beam, and generating that amount of power from a relatively small tactical aircraft is a major engineering challenge.
ITS NOT A CHALLENGE YOU FUCKING DINGUS
The second problem is the beam itself. Even if you generate enough power, the atmospheric turbulence involved with operating a fighter jet in combat makes it nearly impossible to maintain a coherent laser beam for long enough to successfully engage a ballistic missile in flight.
ERGO THE TERM "FUCKING FANCY FLASHLIGHTS ON SHITTY-ASS PLANES"
"I think it can be done as an experiment, but as a weapon system to equip an airplane with the kinds of lasers we think necessary -- in terms of their power level, and all their support requirements, getting the airplane to altitudes where atmospheric turbulence can be mitigated appropriately -- that combination of things doesn't go on one platform," as Griffin put it in a May 2020 conference call with reporters, according to Breaking Defense.
One month after Griffin's comments, then-Pentagon acquisition chief Will Roper said that the Air Force was rethinking the potential applications of the laser weapon technology developed through the SHiELD program beyond integrating the system into a tactical fighter jet, Defense News reported.
"What I've told that team is, 'Let's have a dialogue,'" Roper said in June 2020, per Defense News. "Let's understand the different power levels and what they should correspond to, and let's not make the highest power level that we can dream up and the mission that's the sexiest be the thing that drives us."
With the SHiELD program concluded and the AHEL defunct, the Defense Department's dream of airborne laser weapons seems as distant as ever. But as the Pentagon continues to invest in directed-energy programs to deal with the rising tide of adversary drone and missile attacks, chances are high that the Air Force's efforts in that arena are far from finished.
MORE MONEY TO BE SHOVELED INTO THE BURN PIT
"After many years of development, HEL weapons are now a battlefield reality," Ortiz said. "The game-changing features of HEL weapons -- deep magazine, scalable effects, and speed-of-light engagement -- combined with the potential logistics benefits of a weapon that effectively uses jet fuel for ammunition, make air platform integration a natural next step."
BATTLEFIELD VIRTUAL REALITY! GET FUCKED AND STAY FUCKED
Got in an argument with someone about slat armor and cage armor in Ukraine. My understanding is that the primary purpose of the armor is the same as it's always been - cause incoming shaped charge munitions to detonate prematurely so the jet of fluid metal can't form properly and cut through the tank's armor. With many modern AT weapons being small, relatively low-mass drones moving at slow speeds (a Lancent apparently does like 30m/s to a Kornet missile's 300m/s) slat, spaced, and cage armor of all kinds are being employed in Ukraine. UA artillery positions have covers of chain link fence, for instance, apparently designed to catch Lancet drones before they can impact and detonate.
And, so, the argument was this guy saying that this is all ridiculous cope and completely ineffective, and my counter was that various cage armor remains effective if it can cause pre-mature detonation of a HEAT warhead to fuck up the fluid metal jet, regardless of how fancy the incoming AT weapon is. And, especially with all these small loitering drone munitions that move slowly relative to traditional AT munitions, cage armor probably works well enough to be worth the extra weight.
Does anyone have access to any actual science on how various kinds of cage armor are performing against modern drone munitions? I'm really curious because to me this seems really straight forward - If a HEAT round can't detonate at the proper distance from the target it can't defeat the target's armor. And they're saying that's bullshit and this is all cope and doesn't work. And that doesn't pass the smell test to me.
Plus, on top of that, with many improvise drones just dropping grenades and mortar rounds, just having a chain link screen to catch the damn things so their detonator doesn't hit a solid surface and go off seems to have some legitimacy.
AAgain, any analysis of whether these defenses are accomplishing anything?
(He was also telling me that the shed tanks are carrying diesel generators to run point-defense guns. According to him older tank's power-plants can't run the point defense guns so they're using diesel generators strapped to the tanks. and this is bad because if hte generator gets hit hte diesel will catch fire and cook the tank crew alive. I'm pretty sure that's total bullshit because tanks have been designed with protection from incendiary attacks for decades, diesel is notoriously hard to ignite and doesn't explode, and anyway T-72s have giant barrels of spare diesel fuel attached to their rear anyway. While probably not filled in combat, it apparently hasn't been a problem for fifty years so I'm skeptical that 10 or 20 gallons of diesel fuel in a portable generator is somehow going to cook a tank crew alive.)
so it was 3 helicopters , then the weather got bad , the helicopter WITH the President had to make a rough landing , while the other 2 helicopters continued their journey ?
Gusanos are seething rn because liberal newspapers are calling Ebrahim Raisi a conservative. The gusanos hate Iran because since 1979, due to sanctions, Iran has been getting closer to leftist leaders and Latin American countries because of trade and diplomatic support for its nuclear program and against sanctions.
The politician has suffered injuries to the extremities and, according to different versions in the media, in the chest or abdomen.

The politician has suffered injuries to the extremities and, according to different versions in the media, in the chest or abdomen.
"He has been shot multiple times and his life is currently in danger," says Fico’s Facebook account, which indicates that he was transported by helicopter to the town of Banská Bystrica, about 65 kilometers from Handlová, where the attack occurred.
The alleged shooter, a 71-year-old man, has been arrested.
On the other hand, President from around the world condemned the attack, this was the case of Ursula Von der Leyen, who published, "I strongly condemn the vicious attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico. These acts of violence have no place in our society and undermine democracy, our most precious common good. My thoughts are with Prime Minister Fico and his family".
The president of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, was also "horrified and indignant at the attack" against the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, and expressed Spain’s support for the politician, his family.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has also called the attack a "horrible crime".
The acting president, Zuzana Caputová, strongly condemned the attack and called for calm and stop the rhetoric of hatred in the country, in addition to reporting the closure of the sessions of parliament until May 21.
The first images showed the moment of the alleged attacker's arrest and the premier's vehicle as he left the scene on his way to the hospital.
Local media reported on Wednesday that security forces arrested the alleged perpetrator in the shooting attack on Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico.
The attacker is 71-year-old Juraj Cintula, a writer and founder of a literary club, Slovak media report. They said that the assailant, originally from Levice in the southeast of the country, was a former employee of a private security company and author of a poetry collection.
The first images showed the moment of the alleged attacker's arrest and the premier's vehicle as he left the scene on his way to the hospital.
Official reports confirm the seriousness of the injuries of the president. According to the private broadcaster TV Joj, the attacker hit Fico in the sternum and extremities after shooting four or five times.
The attack occurred in the village of Handlova, about 150 kilometers northeast of the capital Bratislava. Fico was chatting with supporters of his party outside a cultural center when several shots rang out.
Fico was taken by helicopter to the town of Banská Bystrica, about 65 kilometers from Handlova.
Fico, whose Smer-SD party won the general elections last September, has served four times as Prime Minister. In addition to his current term as Prime Minister, Fico also headed the government in 2006-10 and 2012-18.
Following his election, he has generated some contradiction with neighboring Kiev. He has questioned Ukraine's sovereignty and called for a compromise with Russia.

Slovakia’s Prime Minister Fico in life-threatening condition after being shot multiple times
Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico was in a life-threatening condition in hospital Wednesday after he was shot multiple times in an assassination attempt.
The shooting took place after an off-site government meeting in the central Slovak town of Handlova. The suspected gunman was among a small crowd of people waiting to greet the prime minister on the street outside the cultural center, where the meeting took place, local media reported.
Footage from the scene shows the injured prime minister being bundled into a vehicle by his staff, before it speeds away with him inside. Fico was taken to a local hospital and then transferred by helicopter to a major trauma center about 20 miles (30 kilometers) away in Banska Bystrica.
A statement posted on Fico’s official Facebook page and his party’s website called the attack “an asassination attempt.”
“He was shot multiple times and is currently in a life-threatening condition. The next few hours will be decisive,” according to the statement.
No one else was injured in the attack, according to Slovak Labor Minister Erik Tomáš.
The official statement said the PM was taken to Banska Bystrica instead of the capital city of Bratislava because “an acute intervention” was necessary. Handlova is about two hours’ drive from the capital Bratislava.
Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová said the suspected gunman was detained by the police. She said law enforcement agencies will release more information when they can and asked the public not to spread unconfirmed rumors. A video from the scene showed a man on the floor being detained by several officials.
Čaputová condemned what she called a “brutal and reckless” attack on the 59-year-old politician. “I’m shocked. I wish Roberto Fico all the strength in this critical moment to recover from the attack,” Čaputová wrote on Facebook. Speaking at a news conference later in the afternoon, she said the attack was “an attack on democracy as well.”
Opposition lawmaker Maria Kolikova described the assault as “an attack on the internal security” of Slovakia.
Felt like a ‘nightmare’
An eyewitness who was at the scene where Fico was shot said the attack felt like a “nightmare” after hearing three “quick” shots, fired one after the other as if you were to “throw a firecracker on the ground.”
“I heard three shots, it was quick one by one like if you throw a firecracker on the ground,” eyewitness Lubica Valkova told Reuters, adding that “he (Fico) fell next to the barrier.”
“I think it is a nightmare, I’ll tell you I think I will not wake up from this,” the 66-year-old said. “That this is not possible to happen in Slovakia.”
Valkova said she had been waiting a long time to shake Fico’s hand and was taking pictures of him when he walked out of the building in Handlova.
“At this moment we heard something like a bang, we thought someone made a joke and threw a firecracker on the ground, that was my first reaction,” Valkova recalled.
The Slovak resident told Reuters she had been waiting from 10 a.m. local time. She claimed police did not search people who were waiting at the event, adding that “we could have shown our empty hands.”
Ally of Moscow
In what was a stunning comeback for the controversial politician, Fico won a third term as Slovakian prime minister last October after running a campaign that criticized western support for Ukraine. Fico had pledged an immediate end to Slovak military support for Ukraine and promised to block Ukraine’s NATO ambitions in what would upend Slovakia’s staunch backing for Ukraine.
Ahead of the election, Fico made no secret of his sympathies towards the Kremlin and blamed “Ukrainian Nazis and fascists” for provoking Vladimir Putin into launching the invasion, repeating the false narrative Russia’s president has used to justify his invasion.
While in opposition, Fico became a close ally of Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban, especially when it came to criticism of the European Union.
Fico previously served as Slovakia’s prime minister for more than a decade, first between 2006 and 2010 and then again from 2012 to 2018. He was forced to resign in March 2018 after weeks of mass protests over the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová. Kuciak reported on corruption among the country’s elite, including people directly connected to Fico and his party SMER.
European leaders immediately condemned the attack. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, tweeted: “I strongly condemn the vile attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico. Such acts of violence have no place in our society and undermine democracy, our most precious common good. My thoughts are with PM Fico, his family.”
And Hungarian Prime Minister Orban added: “I was deeply shocked by the heinous attack against my friend, Prime Minister Robert Fico. We pray for his health and quick recovery! God bless him and his country!”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed “solidarity with the people of Slovakia” following the “appalling” assault on Fico.
“We strongly condemn this act of violence against our neighboring partner state’s head of government. Every effort should be made to ensure that violence does not become the norm in any country, form, or sphere,” he posted on X.

Over the weekend Dutch universities set up a protocol on how to deal with campus protests. University boards complained about having to talk with anonymous students who hide their faces. So in the protocol they added that they will only meet with students who will show their face and ID. They also repeated that staying overnight on campus ground is not allowed, and that police forces will be used when necessary. So they are ignoring the demands of students and staff about allowing peaceful protest and avoiding police to interfere on campus.
Groningen, Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Maastricht joined the Dutch student intifada yesterday and set up encampments on university grounds!
Maastricht university board has said that they do not want police on campus and thus that the encampment can stay.
Groningen, Nijmegen and Eindhoven encampments were also not attacked by police during the night and thus still there. Groningen board did threaten to use police force at first.
I think that there wasn’t enough riot police to intervene in all these cities as they were already busy beating Amsterdam students.
Amsterdam is still going strong and occupied another building on Monday. Riot police entered the building in the afternoon, after which the students and staff went elsewhere to protest. All UvA buildings will be closed for the next 2 days. During the occupation 4 people dressed completely in black entered the occupied building and started breaking computer screens and other expensive stuff. They were also the ones who started to create barricades against wishes of protest organisers which was probably the reason why the riot police came so early.
Other university cities (including Utrecht) had protests as well but no encampments.
All encampments communicate mostly through instagram and you can find them by searching for ‘[city] encampment’.

The United States International Trade Commission (USITC) today determined that there is a reasonable indication that a U.S. industry is materially injured by reason of imports of ferrosilicon from Brazil, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and Russia that are allegedly sold in the United States at less than fair value and subsidized by the governments of Brazil, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and Russia.
Chairman David S. Johanson and Commissioners Rhonda K. Schmidtlein, Jason E. Kearns, and Amy A. Karpel voted in the affirmative.
As a result of the Commission’s affirmative determinations, the U.S. Department of Commerce will continue its investigations of imports of ferrosilicon from Brazil, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and Russia, with its preliminary countervailing duty determinations due on or about June 21, 2024, and its preliminary antidumping duty determinations due on or about September 4, 2024.
The Commission’s public report Ferrosilicon from Brazil, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and Russia (Inv. Nos. 701-TA-712-715 and 731-TA-1679-1682 (Preliminary), USITC Publication 5506, May 2024) will contain the views of the Commission and information developed during the investigations.
“The onslaught of dumped imports from these countries over the last three years has caused serious harm to the U.S. industry, its workers, and the communities in which we operate,” said Marco Levi, Chief Executive Officer of Ferroglobe PLC. “A successful outcome in these cases will allow us to get back to work on a level playing field.”
Brazil, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Russia making Amerikkkan lives worse:
“American producers can compete with anyone in the world, as long as we’re all playing by the same rules,” said Chris Cobb, CCMA’s plant manager. “Bringing these cases allows us to protect our colleagues, employees, and communities. Fortunately, our country’s trade laws are set up to support fair trade. On behalf of our employees, customers, and colleagues, we look forward to seeing those laws enforced and those who violate our laws held accountable.” -

This possibility could be analyzed if aggressive actions towards the Russian nation escalate.
On Thursday, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Russia does not rule out the possibility of downgrading its diplomatic relations with the United States in certain scenarios.
In an interview with TASS news agency, Ryabkov said that Russia has never taken the initiative to make such moves in its relations with the United States or other NATO countries.
"However, they are quite possible, in my view, if the Western group chooses the path of escalation," he said, adding that this does not necessarily pertain to further support for Kiev, but could also apply to Russian assets or other economic actions.
What exactly would trigger such a situation is not a question for today, he said. "At least, I am not prepared to discuss this topic."
"If there is a further aggravation, this will be the subject of separate analysis and decision-making at the level of political leadership," Ryabkov said.
On another theme, the Russian Defense Ministry informed that its forces intercepted over 100 Ukrainian drones on Friday night.
The air defense system and the Black Sea fleet intercepted 51 drones over Crimea, 44 over the Krasnodar Territory, six over the Belgorod Region, and one over the Kursk Region. Meanwhile, Russian warplanes destroyed six drone boats in the waters of the Black Sea.
After Milei's insult, Spain recalls ambassador to Argentina
Argentinian accused Sánchez's wife of corruption
The Spanish government called back the European nation's representative in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for consultations after the South American country's president, Javier Milei, called the wife of Spain's president, Pedro Sánchez, “corrupt”.
In diplomacy, when a country recalls its representative in another nation it is a sign that relations between the two countries have been seriously affected.
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said that Milei's accusation went beyond any political or ideological differences.
“Mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs is an unbreakable principle of international relations and it is unacceptable for a sitting president, on a visit to Spain, to insult Spain and the president of the government of Spain,” he said.
Albares also said that Milei's behavior has brought relations between Spain and Argentina to their “most serious moment in our recent history”. The Spanish minister also demanded that Milei make a formal public apology.
“If this apology is not forthcoming, we will take all the measures we believe appropriate to defend our sovereignty and our dignity,” added the Spanish government representative, who also said that he had asked the European Union (EU) for support against Milei.
Shortly afterwards, the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell Fontelles, came out in defense of the Spanish president on a social network.
“Attacks on the family members of political leaders have no place in our culture: we condemn and reject them, especially when they come from partners,” said the EU representative.
Milei called Sánchez's wife corrupt at a far-right Vox party event in Madrid. The Argentine president has yet to comment directly on the case, although he has shared several comments on a social network from third parties defending him in the episode.
Sánchez's wife, Bergoña Gomez, was the target of a corruption and influence peddling complaint that led the Spanish president to consider resigning. However, Sanchéz ended up giving up on resigning, according to him, so as not to allow smear campaigns to flourish.
According to Reuters, Spanish prosecutors have asked for the case to be dropped due to a lack of evidence. The group that filed the complaint against Bergoña has even stated that it does not know the truth of the information and that it only based its lawsuit on press reports.
This is not the first time that Milei has clashed with the leaders of other countries, causing diplomatic crises. At the end of March, Colombia expelled Argentine diplomats in the capital Bogotá after Milei called Colombian President Gustavo Petro a “terrorist” and a “murderer”.

Ortiz Acosta presented his resignation letter on Thursday. According to local media, he would be replaced by Vice Minister of Internal Order, Juan José Santivañez, who would be sworn in on the afternoon of this day.
The Minister of the Interior of Peru, Walter Ortiz Acosta, resigned this Thursday, barely a month and a half after being sworn in, amid questions about interference to ongoing investigations on the appointed president, Dignified Boluarte, and his brother Nicanor Boluarte.
Ortiz Acosta presented his resignation letter on Thursday. According to local media, he would be replaced by Vice Minister of Internal Order, Juan José Santivañez, who would be sworn in on the afternoon of this day.
Last Tuesday, the official publicly endorsed the decision to remove police support for the Special Team of Prosecutors Against Corruption in Power (Eficcop). He took responsibility for the measure against that team, which investigates Nicanor Boluarte for leading an alleged criminal organization and influence peddling against the State.
The brother and lawyer of the designated president, Mateo Castañeda, were arrested during raids carried out on May 10. Some 20 others were also arrested in the context of a court case called "The Waykis in the Shadow".
The next day, the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office announced that it was opening proceedings against the de facto president and Ortiz Acosta for having withdrawn police support for the anti-corruption group. He accused them of alleged perpetrators of the crimes of personal cover-up and abuse of authority.
After hearing the decision of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Ortiz Acosta reacted and criticized the interim prosecutor, Juan Carlos Villena, who demanded that police support be restored to the Eficcop.
Retired general of the Peruvian National Police, Ortiz Acosta is the fifth minister of this portfolio during Boluarte’s term. He took over the portfolio on 1 April.
The latest bulletin released by the Civil Defense dlocalo, in addition to noting that 154 people died because of the tragedy, added that 98 are missing and 806 were injured.
The Brazilian government reported on Friday that it increased to 154 the number of people killed in Rio Grande do Sul, after rains and floods that affected 461 municipalities, representing 93 percent of the cities in that state.
The latest bulletin released by the Civil Defense dlocalo, in addition to noting that 154 people died because of the tragedy, added that 98 are missing and 806 were injured.
In this regard, family members or friends of disappeared persons, if they are located, are requested to go to the nearest Civil Police Station to compute the information.
To date, Rio Grande do Sul has 540,192 homeless people, as a result of flooding caused by the state’s largest climate crisis, according to statements by local media and authorities.
Meanwhile, 2,281,830 people were affected and 78,165 are in shelters. Likewise, the Civil Defense reported that there are no deaths under investigation.
He also reported that 82,666 people, 12,108 animals have been rescued and at least 27,688 government agents have participated in these actions.
She has been involved in scandals involving corruption, inappropriate behavior, and interference in criminal investigations.
On Friday, the Peruvian congress controlled by a conservative majority did not admit three impeachment motions presented against President Dina Boluarte.
The first impeachment motion was promoted by Together for Peru and Democratic Change, which maintain that Boluarte did not behave appropriately and transparently for not having responded to Congress for a 12-day absence.
The second impeachment motion was presented by Free Peru, which accused President Boluarte of getting involved in the criminal proceedings involving her brother Nicanor.
The third impeachment motion was promoted by the benches of Free Peru, Democratic Change, Together for Peru, the Magisterial Block, Bicentennial Peru, and some independent legislators. They maintain that Boluarte interfered in the investigations carried out by anti-corruption prosecutors and a special team of the National Police.
"We fulfill the will of the Peruvian people who give the president an 8 percent approval rating. This public indignation stems from the president's frivolity, as she has been absent without permission and without informing the public to undergo surgery, and has dissolved a special professional police team with the intention of covering up," stated legislator Susel Paredes.
In mid-2023, Boluarte was absent from her position for 12 days to undergo cosmetic surgeries, which, according to the impeachment request, constitutes grounds for "moral incapacity" and "abandonment of office." However, this only reflects part of the reasons why she has lost popular support.
Files at the Prosecutor's Office
Boluarte's rise to office in December 2022 was marked by massive protests in several regions, which lasted for several months and led to direct confrontations with law enforcement, resulting in the deaths of 49 people.
These events have led to a prosecutorial investigation of Boluarte and her then interior ministers for the crimes of genocide, aggravated homicide, and abuse of authority.
The Peruvian president is also under investigation for passive bribery and illicit enrichment, due to the Rolex watch scandal.
She wore these watches at various official ceremonies and, when confronted by a journalistic investigation, claimed they were a loan from her friend, the governor of Ayacucho, Wilfredo Oscorima, who received a transfer of 100 million soles.
Her brother
The local press has continued to focus on Boluarte's inner circle, especially after discovering her brother Nicanor attempting to form a political party supposedly with the support of prefects and subnational authorities.
Nicanor Boluarte was arrested along with the president's lawyer, Mateo Castañeda, after being implicated in a prosecutorial investigation for allegedly being part of a network dedicated to influence peddling.
This case also led to another prosecutorial investigation against the Peruvian president, this time for alleged personal cover-up and abuse of authority, after she dissolved a special police team hours before they were to participate in the capture of her brother.
The economy remains stagnant
Boluarte committed to restoring economic growth after a negative result of 0.55 percent in 2023 due to social protests and natural disasters. However, her results remain elusive, with an increase in poverty to 29 percent and a production decline of 0.28 percent in March.
Amid this persistent crisis, Parliament seems to have lent a hand to her administration to inject cash into the market, after approving a seventh partial withdrawal of private pension funds and the free disposition of 100 percent of the Compensation for Time of Services, an amount reserved by workers for periods of unemployment.
Insecurity on the rise
Currently, the main concern of Peruvians is citizen insecurity, which remains without an apparent solution, despite the states of emergency declared in the most affected areas.
On Thursday, Boluarte swore in her sixth Interior Minister during her term, following the resignation of Walter Ortiz, who was involved in the deactivation of the special police team that carried out the arrest of Nicanor Boluarte.

This week, Kenya hosted high-level mediation talks initiated by President William Ruto earlier this month. The talks aim to establish a foundation for lasting peace in South Sudan.
On Thursday, South Sudan's Transitional Government of National Unity and opposition groups signed a pact to enhance efforts toward lasting peace and stability in the country.
By signing the declaration of commitment to the Tumaini initiative, meaning "hope" in Swahili, the two parties pledged to support efforts to end hostilities and promote inclusive growth in South Sudan.
The signing ceremony, held in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, was attended by senior government officials, diplomats, opposition groups, civil society and bilateral partners, all witnessing the commitment to the South Sudan peace process.
Abraham Korir SingOei, principal secretary in Kenya's Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, hailed the signing of the new pact to boost the quest for peace, justice, inclusivity and good governance in South Sudan.
SingOei added that parties to the South Sudan peace process including the government and opposition groups had an obligation to promote justice, governance, economic growth and security sector reforms, to achieve long-term stability in the East African country.
This week, Kenya hosted high-level mediation talks initiated by President William Ruto earlier this month. The talks aim to establish a foundation for lasting peace in South Sudan.
In addition, the talks that brought on board government officials and opposition groups as well as civil society members were expected to discuss the modalities of holding general elections slated for December.
Albino Mathom, the head of the South Sudan government delegation, said the mediation talks, whose climax was the signing of the declaration of commitment to the South Sudan peace process, reaffirmed the vitality of home-grown initiatives to tackle regional conflicts.
Mathom added that given the calamities that civil strife has visited South Sudan in the last four decades, leaders and ordinary citizens were committed to closing that painful chapter and forging a future of hope, peace and justice.
Pagan Amum Okiech, the spokesperson for the Real Sudan People's Liberation Movement (R-SPLM), an opposition group, said the signing of the declaration of commitment to the Tumaini Initiative ushered in a new era of durable peace, unity and respect for political pluralism.
The South Sudan opposition groups, according to Amum, are committed to rescuing the country from multiple crisis, forge national consensus on designing a future of freedom, prosperity and justice for all citizens.
Meantime, Lazarus Sumbeiywo, the chief mediator of the ongoing high-level mediation process for South Sudan in Kenya, expressed faith in the commitment of all parties to ending hostilities that bode ill for stability in the region.
In December 2023, South Sudan President Salva Kiir reportedly asked his Kenyan counterpart, President Ruto, to assume the lead in mediating peace talks, taking over from the Community of Sant'Egidio in Rome. Kiir expressed concerns that the talks had lingered without resolution under Sant'Egidio's mediation.
The Rome-based community adjourned the peace talks in March 2023 due to disagreements between the parties regarding the agenda.

Former President Uribe faces accusations in cases about fraud and bribery of witnesses.
On Friday, the Colombian prosecutor will initiate a virtual hearing in a process against former president Alvaro Uribe for the crimes of procedural fraud and bribery of witnesses.
Through the his lawyer Diego Cadena, the far-right politician sought to bribe witnesses who were in prison to prevent them from declaring against him in a trial that Senator Ivan Cepeda began against Uribe.
Among the prisoners whom the lawyer Cadena tried to bribe is the exparamilitary Juan Guillermo Monsalve, who was serving a 40 -year sentence when the attempted manipulation of witnesses happened.
The judge of Bogota Sandra Heredia will coordinate the accusation hearing, in which Ivan Villarreal will act as a delegated prosecutor before the Supreme Court of Justice.
This case dates back to 2012 when former President Uribe prosecuted the leftist senator accusing him of witness tampering.
At that time, Cepeda, who had acquired a reputation for investigating war crimes committed by the Colombian state, was preparing a congressional complaint against Uribe for his ties to far-right paramilitary forces.
The Supreme Court of Justice, however, decided not to open an investigation against the congressman. Instead, the judges opened a case against Uribe for paying bribes to several imprisoned paramilitaries whose purpose was to get them to speak in his favor.
