Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday he is sending National and Florida State Guard troops to Texas to help that state put up razor wire fences on the southern border, a move in apparent defiance of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on the contentious immigration issue.
DeSantis said it would be the “first-ever deployment” for the State Guard, a force he re-established in 2022 after being defunct for 75 years.
But Florida law says the State Guard, which reports directly to the governor, is to be used “exclusively within the state,” and a proposed bill to allow out-of-state deployments has not been passed by the Legislature.
DeSantis spokesman Jeremy Redfern did not respond to a request for comment on the use of the State Guard outside of Florida.
Can someone from the White House please point out that if there really is an "invasion" at the southern border, that makes DeSantis and Abbott guilty of aiding America's enemies by putting them on buses and planes and sending them all over the US?
It doesn't, but that's beside the point. The point is, if there really is an "invasion" at the border, what do you call someone who helps those "invaders" get deeper into the country? Why shouldn't the federal government march right in to Tallahassee and Austin and arrest Abbott and DeSantis on charges of treason?
Biden should call their bluff. Letting Abbott and DeSantis make these little shows of defiance using actual troops and law enforcement personnel only emboldens the right. That has to be a red line.
He should call their bluff and force them to allow thousands of illegal crossings per day without doing anything about it? That's the right move, in your opinion?
Isn't there a plaque at the Statue of Liberty saying something like:
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
The US and Canada were literally started by immigration, grown by it. Before these two countries were born it belonged to First Nations and the wild. The attitude of 'fuck you I got mine' is classic boomer and why society is so fucked today. If they weren't so rightfully scared of ICE they'd be taxpayers, adding even more value to the country than just their labour and culture alone.
Those folks should be taken in, processed, housed as appropriate (if they have status), or deported.
We claim to be the best country on the planet, let's act like it. Dominate the immigrant issue.
Imo, build a service-to-citizenship path, for those that don't already have standing. These people want to build a life. Let them. And let America benefit TRANSPARENTLY from their effort. Make a new civilian conservation corps, and help bring America into a new public works era.
I personally do not care about illegal crossings, it does not affect me in the slightest. Immigration is a net positive for the country imo, and I really don't care about if it happens the "right way" or not. Fuck borders shit is a scam.
The right move is for the GOP clowns in Congress to actually agree to do something about it. That said, the idea that nothing is being does is just plain idiotic. There are around 20,000 border patrol agents. What exactly is it you think they spend their time doing?
For fuck's sake, shut this down already. They're going to keep ratcheting until they get a response, and if they go far enough the next step is to actually start fighting. It's not a harmless stunt, this is normalizing the steps toward armed rebellion.
What's crazy is, no, they don't want war. They want to get reelected indefinitely for status and profit, and will say anything to get that. The shit they say incites their followers to want war, and that is advantageous for them.
The politicians know their bluffs will be called, but if they keep people mad and scared, they can keep farming donations and votes from rubes. They've done it for decades. This rhetoric gets stale eventually, so they have to keep amplifying the message, to the point they're now posturing for a civil war they know won't ever come.
Meanwhile, their voters are bashing people on the head with hammers or killing family members because they've been told to be scared for decades, and are now being told to fight back.
I don't really know what DeSantis and Trump really want. I know some of these people who follow them though, and yes, they absolutely want civil war. That may not continue if it starts happening and they find out what the reality is like, but right now they want it.
We would have to actually end the first civil war before we could technically start a new one. They did have terms of surrender etc signed. But only the leadership surrendered. It's been a cold civil war for at least the last hundred years plus
You know, either they really want to start another war, or this is just a damn show for this crazy ass election cycle that’s taking place. Probably both. They want to be able to tell their constituents “we’re doing everything we can to save this country, and we’re telling the Feds to F off while we do it. And their base just eats it up like taco night.
It would seem to me that if a governor could order military actions in another state, that would make this a nation of 50 commander-in-chiefs, not one. I would think that, if not under orders from POTUS, any military actions of the Florida National Guard in another state would be illegal.
I feel the obvious thing that is happening is they are trying to normalize it in a lead up to civil war. One inch at a time they are consciously walking towards normalizing state on state interference. It's same reason we are seeing texas trying to get medical records from a Seattle hospital. Pushing the boundaries is the MO.
Ah but this isn't the National Guard, it's the Florida State Guard. The first time it existed was because the actual National Guard was busy in WW2. Now lil Ronny resurrected it to use as his personal police force.
Arguably, putting up razor wire isn't military action. It's construction. The intent is obvious of course, but the constitution doesn't usually cover intent.
I don't support DeSantis or the hanging of new wire, but dont National Guards get deployed to other states for disaster recovery like floods and wild fires? Not sure about the clasification of razor wire, but might not be a stretch. I agree military operations would be an overstep.
The important distinction here is he is sending the Florida State Guard, which is completely separate from the Florida contingent of the National Guard. He brought the force back after it was defunct for 75 years. They are legally not allowed to act outside the borders of Florida.
I'm positive he doesn't have the capacity to do this since it pertains to operations outside of state lines, but these assholes really want to run and push the limits to trigger a court case. As I'm seeing this, if the Florida Troops do anything like harm a person, they are fucked.
Why is it only a crisis in Texas and not Florida, New Mexico, Arizona, or California?
I get a lot of people are crossing over, fleeing violence and political unrest but it seems like only Texas is posturing and turning it into a political issue.
The next Red Dawn remake won't have to worry about hasty last-minute edits to make the Chinese invaders into North Koreans. MAGA chucklefucks getting schwacked won't bother the CCP one bit.
This is the most disgusting shit. All of this border cruelty.
I have tried to think of a situation where I would put my family in peril and hand over my life savings for just a chance of a better life, not even a guarantee. I can only imagine the horror that could cause such an action.
These people are not waking up one day and just going across the border. They have journeyed for weeks, even months. Risking everything to cross some of the most treacherous terrain in the world. This is not a decision made lightly.
These are desperate people, and they are people. We may only be an economic collapse away from being just like them.
Nothing justifies intentionally causing harm to another person when your own life is not in direct threat. Most states consider it a crime to set a trap that may maim someone who breaks into your home. In Florida I would be fined or charged if I put up razor wire with the intent of harming any animal, even invasive animals that can be hunted throughout the year on public land.
That is not against the decision unless this is a different one than on the 22nd. I don't belive the decision said new razor wire couldn't be placed. It said that they couldn't stop the federal government from cutting through it to do their job on the otherside. Texas wanted to block the border patrol from doing their job physically and legally then complain that they weren't doing their job. There seems to be another issue here about Florida law and using their guard outside Florida, but that wasn't the issue of the decision I was thinking of.
