Something tells me the cartels aren't too concerned about these "border protections". Why would they get involved? In fact, the whole thing works out pretty well for them as a distraction.

Why is it so common to blame those poorer, weaker, and more desperate than you for your problems. Yes live probably has gotten worse, and obvious problems are not being solved, but migrants are the last people to blame. It’s such a destructive tendency, and it’s sad to see the same mistake happening again and again.
The worst bit? The people most mad have the most in common with the migrants: low job security, lack of healthcare, food insecurity... if the people flying their Trump flags high would take just one second to look at themselves and at the rest of us they'd realize the enemy isn't people, it's unchecked capitalism.

Hilarious, maybe. But the US really can't deny entry to its citizens. But they can push a ton of bureaucracy on them (how many of them will have their passport on them?) and even immediately arrest them upon re-entry.
