Elon Musk's Tesla is due to release quarterly production and delivery figures on Tuesday.
Chinese company BYD has moved a step closer to toppling Elon Musk's Tesla as the world's biggest-selling manufacturer of electric vehicles.
The firm said on Monday it had sold a record 526,000 battery-only vehicles in the last three months of 2023.
…
For the year as a whole, Shenzen-based BYD said it had sold more than 3 million so-called-new energy vehicles (NEVs), which includes battery-only vehicles and hybrids.
Almost 1.6 million of its total sales were battery-only vehicles, the firm said.
Industry analysts have forecast that Tesla sold around 483,000 electric vehicles in the last three months of 2023 and 1.82 million for the year as a whole.
You can buy BYD cars outside of China. For example:
The company says it plans to launch three new models in Europe within the coming year in addition to the five models it is already selling that include sedans, hatchbacks and SUVs. BYD has 230 outlets in 19 European countries, it says.
No BYD cars in the US (yet), except trucks and buses:
BYD has been making electric buses in the United States for years and supplies cities such as Los Angeles and Long Beach from a factory in Lancaster, California, built a decade ago.
They manufacture and sell the buses in Canada... There are BYD buses in operation in at least Toronto, Victoria, Longeuil, St. Albert and Grand Prairie (and probably more by now). https://en.byd.com/news/byd-opens-first-canadian-bus-assembly-plant/ If you're in Montreal, there's a decent chance you'll see BYD E6 taxis.
There's been rumors of the cars being prepped for general sale in Canada.... but I can't find any proof of that right now.

US-based Tesla is scheduled to release its latest quarterly vehicle production and delivery figures before Wall Street opens on Tuesday.

Last January, Mr Musk said that Tesla had the potential to achieve 2 million deliveries in 2023 but had since warned that higher borrowing costs were putting pressure on demand for his company's cars.
The company made a name for itself as a manufacturer of rechargeable batteries - used in smartphones, laptops and other electronics - that competed with pricier Japanese imports.
It started selling its shares on the stock market in 2002 and diversified by purchasing a struggling state-owned car manufacturer, Qinchuan Automobile Company.

I didn't realize China had already copied Tesla's product. Absolute lol at M*** for heavily manufacturing there (not just parts, but everything). Copy, paste, rename... BYD.
I don't mean to give all credit to Tesla, for the success of BYD. But let's not pretend that many Chinese companies haven't earned the reputation for (or even specialized in) "quickly learning" and "producing similar work" from competitors. Tesla still entered the country enthusiastically (sold hard-fought knowledge for short term gain), and are already losing their grip. Best of luck to anyone creating affordable EVs.
