Smart cookie undersells it dramatically. Taylor Swift is a marketing and possibly a financial genius who has locked herself into the collective consciousness of the country. I used to try to not listen to her music at all, but my daughter and wife absolutely love her, so it's all I get to listen to around them. She's had virtually 0 truly bad press surrounding her. You don't have to like her music, but you have to respect her ability to sell her image and music.

Actually this is a point of conflict for some of her fans. Some of my friends are swifties and they hate consumerism and high concert prices and collectibles and marketing that incentivize FOMO to spend more money. They jokingly call her their capitalist queen.
She probably got that from her parents. They made the smart move to buy a farm and legitimize her country status. And I bet it was the parents idea to do country first and than transition to pop. The country genre was an easier market to break into at the time since country fans, back when she was an unknown, were still buying CDs at Walmart and such. So these store would put a larger selection of country music on the shelves than any other genre. Meaning a smaller country artist would get shelve space.

It's really interesting too. If I remember right, she said in a pandemic era interview that she was told to not go political in country music. She came to realize though she needed to say something -- she was rather disturbed by the far right claiming her as an Aryan goddess or something. A gay friend of hers also encouraged her to use her platform to promote gay rights.
Long story short though, she's realized the importance of speaking out, and her newer songs talk about gender norms and how she's expected to be a wife and all that. She's a really interesting person!

She makes good music, but that's it imo. Nothing great and nothing ever really bad, just alright music you can put on at most social gatherings and someone will know a song.
Where she really excels is her live performances. We took my kids to the movie on her latest tour and it was really amazing. The spectacle certainly elevated the music. I know it was a movie edited for a theater experience but props to her for putting on a 3hr plus show night after night, not really missing a beat at any of them, and doing it with a smile for her fans. Also I can't imagine the overwhelming effort required by everyone involved each night to make that show run smoothly. Truly professionals on all fronts in that regard and it's cool to see it all working.
I must add that I can't stand anything Taylor anymore. My wife and kids have her music on constantly and they've talked about her non stop since my wife went to the concert over the summer. It's been months of nothing but Taylor every minute of every day and I'm going insane.
Here are some recommendations! Musically for the last 10 years she's been doing mostly slick and polished pop, except for the two albums she released during the pandemic which are a bit more intimate and folksy. She often writes about (romantic) relationships in a very intricate way (mostly autobiographically), which is a big draw for her fanbase I guess. But she also has some more varied stuff to offer.
Out Of The Woods (I prefer the original version, not the re-recorded one) - Really big, frenzied popsong that just builds and builds.
Seven - Beautiful and melancholic song about childhood friendship.
Would've Could've Should've - This is very Taylor Swift in its subject. A song about losing her innocence and still regretting that relationship years later. Full of angry and confused feelings.
Anti-Hero - You have maybe heard this one. A song reflecting her public perception that's equally sad and humorous.
Only The Young - Not necessarily one of her best but it fits this thread as it's an anti-GOP song.
