At least after the fact, Carter seems a lot better than Obama. He's long maintained that Israel must dismantle all settlements, that Palestinians are treated like animals, etc. He generally has pretty good* takes on the subject. Way better than the hospital bomber.
*Pretty good I guess is relative, anything short of the "The UN resolution for the partition of palestine was forcefully pushed by western countries who bribed and pressured colonies and poor global south countries" is probably not good enough.
It’s a “skinniest kid in fat camp” situation. Obama was sympathetic relative to the other presidents, but woefully inadequate in the abstract. Like, he didn’t want liberation, he wanted conditions in the open air prison just nice enough to not generate the occasional unpleasant headline.
His most recent output (amidst a post that's filled with Israel support):
"It means acknowledging that Palestinians have also lived in disputed territories for generations; that many of them were not only displaced when Israel was formed but continue to be forcibly displaced by a settler movement that too often has received tacit or explicit support from the Israeli government; that Palestinian leaders who’ve been willing to make concessions for a two-state solution have too often had little to show for their efforts; and that it is possible for people of good will to champion Palestinian rights and oppose certain Israeli government policies in the West Bank and Gaza without being anti-semitic."
He goes as far as 'Palestinians are being treated unfairly', which is more than practically any President, but it always puts them at second.
I think the claim of sympathy was that there was a report by one of his staffers that said he was kind of shocked at how the West Bank was being eroded away by the Israelis
