Is lemm.ee actually shutting down?
is this real
Dammit, I literally just re-opened !radiolemmy@lemm.ee this week. What unfortunate timing.
To any of my subscribers reading this: I'm currently in the process of finding a new instance. I'll update this comment when I establish a new home for Radio Lemmy. Stay tuned...
(e: Lemm.ee was also my first account after I left reddit. As silly as it is, I'm going to miss it. I have another account on a different instance but it's not nearly as old...)
EDIT 2: We moved to !radiolemmy@lemmy.blahaj.zone
Can't wait to see you at the relaunch. Streaming will begin Q3 2025.
YOU DID THIS TO US!!!!
In all seriousness, I'm sorry your community is going away. What kind of stuff was it for? Radio as in AM and FM? Ham? Frequencies for radio waves? Aliens?
Let me know where you end up and I'll subscribe! I finally convinced my wife to join Lemmy on .ee. It is unfortunate that she'll have to pick a new instance, but I get it why the effort outweighs the benefit of running an instance.
Edit This was also my first instance after reddit. I donated a few months ago to help with what I could. I, too, will miss it. As far as instances went, this one matched my personality the closest. Censorship was light but fair. Only now do I realize that it might have been a lack of admin intervention that made that possible!
Sorry guys; my bad. It's all my fault.
Jokes aside, it is going to be an internet radio station run by Lemmy users. We will have live DJs, scheduled programming blocks, and all music will be picked by the community.
This actually a relaunch. I originally launched the station back in 2023 but it barely lasted two months because I couldn't get enough content nor enough DJs to fill the schedule.
This time around I'm not launching the station until I have enough content to actually function like a proper radio station. I'm shooting for Q3 2025 because I feel like that is a wide enough window to get enough volunteers before we hit the airwaves. It all depends on you.
So if you want to contribute a block of programming, or even just give me a list of your favorite tunes, please read this first, and then PM we what you've got.
Also if you want to be a live DJ, please fill out this 4 question application.
Join us at our new home !radiolemmy@lemmy.blahaj.zone. Thank you and see you on the airwaves soon!
Bruh what? They're citing lack of staff? They haven't even asked for volunteers! I would be happy to help!
You don't necessarily want to just ask for volunteers as that's a great way to summon exactly the kind of people you don't want to put in charge of online communities. The best way is usually to notice people who are already part of the community and consistently make positive contributions, then ask for their help. If none of those people want to, though, you're stuck.
As somebody that created and moderated communities for almost 20 years you nailed it.
Nobody should actively want to be a moderator, it's a hell job.
Flashback to when the creator of lemmy.world/c/the_pack was looking for mods. I volunteered with
I’m also a shitty mod and will disappear for weeks at a time. I only have experience modding a small subreddit and have no familiarity with Lemmy’s mod tools. Feel free to hit me up.
I passed the vibe check and now I'm exactly as crap a mod as I said I'd be.
Obviously you would vet each person, not just blindly give admin privileges.
They did, 4 month ago
The people that are most willing to help are generally the least likely to help, especially when it comes to content moderation.

(my local version of the recruitment thread, in case the original lemm.ee post link becomes inaccessible)
Honestly, me too. I wouldn't mind taking on some /c/, but I've got a bad moderation record (banned in places, removed comments in others......) but I can be better and can take this place with sincerity rather than a place to vent my autistic annoyances in the worst ways possible. I've been here for 2 years and I wouldn't want this - what we have - to go away.
Can we please have a post where /c/ that are struggling to moderate could ask for help? Hell, we could even do it monthly or every 2 months. Just gather ever /c/ that is struggling and ask for vols.
If you're gonna volunteer to be a moderator or admin for your instance you probably should brush up on its philosophy regarding other instances first.
I wish the best for the admin and mods of lemm.ee. I can attest to the frustration that is running any online community though, especially one built on/dependent on Lemmy. I am sorry to see you stepping out @sunaurus@lemm.ee but hope you're doing alright otherwise. Was real nice bouncing ideas and changes off you in the past.
I also wish the best for the admins and mods
I was waiting for piefed to develop a little bit more ig this is the best opportunity now
If this is really the end, I'd like to say thank you to everyone who made this instance special and i'd like to say sorry for being an asshole at times. This is the only instance that would take me in during the lemmy boom 3 years ago when reddit killed 3rd party apps.
if it's time to go, it's time to go... thanks again everyone
Here here. This was a special place and I'm glad it existed and I was part of it, too. I wish the admin(s) nothing but the best and hope they stay on Lemmy as one of us reg. users!
Anyone have suggestions for similar instances?
I assume my user account will also go down? I'm new to the lemmy community so I don't know how this would interfere with me being able to comment and post on other instances from this account
Your account will still exist, but you won’t be able to use it. So you should probably make an alt on another server.
I’d recommend maybe https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/ (similar but explicitly political unlike lemmee) https://lemmy.cafe/ (similar but defederated from more instances)
I do typically browse by all so lemmy.dbzer0.com may be the better option. I like how lemm.ee wasn't defederated from that many instances
I’d recommend maybe https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/
I think this is gonna be the most logical direction to go for me now.
Someone in another thread suggested lemmy.zip and lemmy.today as having similar defederation policies as lemm.ee. That's probably where I'll go since I like being able to see pretty much all lemmy instances. Most of the ones that have been suggested in the replies to your post so far appear to defederate more than lemm.ee. I can't tell for sure on the piefed instances since their /instances format is pretty different than lemmy's.
I was about to make a new lemm.ee sub too
It seems so 😭
Oof this sucks
another discussion here: https://crazypeople.online/post/2634649 (with people from outside lemm.ee)
Are there any active communities hosted here that will be lost?
Yes, the Movies community is very active and is the best place on Lemmy if you want to discuss films or the film industry.
lemm.ee is one of the biggest instances. yes, there are communities and all of them will be lost.
is this trolling, or are you serious?
!movies@lemm.ee, !casualconversation@lemm.ee, !television@lemm.ee
We are going to organize the migration in the coming days.
!casualconversation@lemm.ee is a big one.
Probably but not any that I'm subscribed to
Yep
???
Discuit is a good alt. Not as much content but very much worth a looksee
looks
Discuit isn't a Threadiverse implementation, a la Lemmy, Piefed, and Mbin. Based on this, I don't believe that multiple Discuit instances can even federate with themselves:
I don't believe federated platforms will ever become mainstream. They have a whole host of problems, not the least of which is that they're too complicated for most people to use. This platform is not, therefore, federated.
Lemmy's benefit is decentralisation. If you go to lemmy.zip, most of the old content is there. We don't lose everything with this shutdown.
Less than 200 commenters: https://discuit.net/DiscuitMeta/post/THOarSQv
Definitely not in the same ballpark as Lemmy/Piefed
they could just continue without mods. everyone hates mods.
Pfft, you say that but there's no way.
Go look at a big instance's defederation list. Just the URLs should be enough to clue you in.
censorship isnt the answer. its always abused by the party in power. so id rather have death threads, cp and genovidal remarks removed than letting my admins get burned out by every thing they dont like. im just sad that lemm.ee went this way. the fediverse is tiny compared to reddit and x but already breaking from the inside because people cant just fucking downvote, block users and scroll away. no every thing post gets put on the goldscale.
