My boomer dad at a tamale with the banana leaf still on.

My sister recently married into a Central American family and my mother-in-law gave me a bunch of tamales, but I accidentally left them at my Dad's place. I got them today and he admitted he ate one but said the "outer layer was really stringy and tough".

Thing is I'm 90% sure I've had tamales with this man before.

  • I did the same thing when I went to work with my new step dad at a construction site and at lunch they got a bunch of tamales from a food truck. He gave me one and I had a hell of a time trying to chew through that corn husk until he noticed and the whole construction site erupted in laughter with finger pointing and all.

  • When I was a teen I went to Mexico on a school trip lasted about a month. We stayed in various homes and inns. They brought out a bowl of advocados and I never really seen them before. So I started to peel out the outter hard skin and began to eat it like a fruit, much to the amusement of the host family. "You must realy like those!" Only later did I realise my folly but.....immersion!
