I mean, it’s expensive because we will pay it, and yes… climate does have an impact, but not anywhere near $5/cup
Quality coffee is one thing I will gladly pay a high premium for. The amount of enjoyment it gives me every day is worth it. I buy from a place I trust that pays growers a higher average price directly, so I don’t feel guilty about supporting awful labor practices.
I pay $48 dollars for 3 pounds of single origin, freshly roasted super-high quality beans. That lasts me 6 weeks. Split those 3 pounds into 42 mornings making a full chemex, and each full pour-over brew comes to $1.14.
That’s affordable to me, but I’m an absolute snob, so you could easily half that for lower quality beans. As long as the climate allows it, and my money doesn’t go straight to modern slavery, I’ll always happily set aside a portion of my income for my daily ritualized joy.
