I resent how D&D and others turned Magic into Science, with numbers and formulas. Magic is magic, it doesn't need a reason or an explanation to work. Or not.
I can't think of any media that explores its magic at any level where that isn't true though, tbh.
The Last Unicorn.
The fact that magic is inherently uncontrollable and has a will of its own is central to the plot.
I need to watch that, I've heard good things but have never seen it.
I have the opposite take. I fucking love detailed hard magic systems.
