One day, Steamworks will also crap itself and we'll find ourselves in the exact same situation. But that day isn't today!
Luckily PC has alternatives
If someone could actually compete with Steam, that would be great. Both gog and Epic don't have linux launchers and lack many releases. If Steam is offline, it will be console gamers laughing at us.
I don't pay $80 annually to play my Steam games online.
You can start steam offline, what is the issue?
Offline Steam is a pretty inconsistent experience.
Wait, does that imply that PSN users can't even play the games that they bought and paid for without connecting to the internet?
Even if Steam itself goes down, I'd still be able to play the games I have installed. Might not have leaderboards and achievements; but MP would still work since Steamworks has nothing to do with that.
A little late, aren't you?
Or a little early.
A wizard is never late nor he is early.
🫢 Kof! kof! Hmm..steamdeck KOF!
Judging by th k I'd bet German :D
Even if the "grace period" (aka "offline mode"), Steam also times out without connection, and if market coverage statistics are to be believed, most people don't seem to use services that provide DRM-free gaming. And as Steam also provides movies and series (they still do, right?), the situation is worse as barely any stores offer DRM-free videos.
(On an upside, at least musics seem to be fairly common DRM-free, including on Steam.)
You have free internet?
I am aware but the post title implies that online gaming is normally free but not everybody has internet at home, though it is becoming rather common meaning it doesn't always appear to be an additional cost. I was merely being a little pedantic though I suppose that might not have been clear.
