Can Americans not get by with a VPN and an APK download? I really don't know.
- They could but they won't, for the same reason you don't see many people from mainland China past the great firewall. It's just more convenient to use an alternative site.
- iPhones can't do APK downloads I think they're locked down to the app store apps unless you jailbreak them
  
  The format for iOS is called IPA. Unless you are in the EU and have iOS 17.4+ (which obviously isn't the case for Americans), you have to either buy a $99/year developer certificate so your apps don't expire for a year, or deal with solutions like AltStore to handle the fact that your sideloaded apps not from the App Store are going to expire after just 7 days (not to mention the fact that there's a limit per Apple ID)

Everyone one moving to another Chinese app is insane to me. China is the worlds #1 fentanyl producer and is working with the mexican cartels to smuggle it into the US.
