What the hell is going on with his glasses in that photo?
I noticed something was up on the right side of his face but decided it was distribution from the thick lenses..
..then I looked at the other side and I have no idea what the fuck is going on. Is this a generated picture like that Netflix documentary?
You have it right, he had thick lenses for myopia, looks like. The edges are polished, so they have a distortion effect when lit the way they are, from above. Looks like his left eye was way more corrected than the left, as well.

I've only looked at the posted photo not read the article. But it looks like the image could have been ai upscaled and that's a result
Bad upscaling algorithm.
Edit: I shouldn't say bad, there's no perfect solution and it's a difficult thing to make work at all.
