The casual "haha jk" racism when I introduced him to a Hispanic friend of mine. The fact that he will loudly talk about some things specifically to upset or annoy people.   A vegan voting to get rid of meat subsidies simply doesn't want to pay for your meat. Or voting for animal rights isn't voting to cause you direct harm like blocking crucial medical care. Also, most vegans usually keep to themselves. The only reason it seems like they tell everyone is how often they are asked, "wait, are you vegetarian?" every time they dare to order tofu/veggies instead of meat.

  I gotta say, I'm becoming more lefty as I age. I grew up with an emphasis on personal responsibility, self reliance etc. Those principles still ring true with me. But I have seen them twisted by conservatives to be used against individuals in the interests of the 1%, the corporations. Trump doesn't even pretend to play by the same rules. He has literally said "I take no responsibility at all" while as the president for things he was in control of. That's not a leader, it's a ruler.

  I am 44 and went from conservative to liberal. My parents always told me I would switch as I got older and that was wrong. What I learned was conservatives want three things: money, controlling people, and being allowed to say the quiet part out loud.

- The dad's comment strongly resembles a lot of posts that I've seen where people say that their kids won't talk to them anymore. They always leave out the most relevant information and act like some lesser thing is the actual problem. They may do it intentionally or unintentionally. It may be narcissism. It may be an inability to face reality. It may be that they always minimize their children.
  But if you hear from the daughters, it will likely not simply be that he voted for Trump. We're missing out on entire lifetimes of context. There will be a lot of discussions leading up to that point. There will be a refusal to hear the children out. There will likely be a long history of emotional abuse.
  And then, the last straw probably won't even be his vote for Trump, but some terrible behavior that he exhibited afterwards. These parents then go online and make up some story that lets them be the victim. You can't say for sure that this is the case, but nowhere in his post does he even try to acknowledge any specific things that his daughters said.

- It's not always simple. I have a close family with a NC child, and he's highly autistic and had been living at home until his mid-20s until the decision. It's not rooted in politics or abuse, and ultimately everyone hopes that sooner or later he figures himself out. But the temptation is very strong to reach out; and the temptation to say he's acting ridiculously is, like, not even overcome. We do think he's being ridiculous. And we sometimes say it. But with sympathy because of the circumstances. I think the author of the original post is probably a tithead, because he voted Trump, but I don't see him as doing that much more than what we do about this lad. Except for do it publically. And also he's the one who's been cut out because all of them have gone NC. So maybe not a similar circumstance at all, but probably still similar local emotional justification - i.e. I bet he feels similarly in many respects to how we feel.

  I know some people who have gone no contact due to manipulative dynamics, though the parents refuse to acknowledge they've ever done anything wrong. E.g. financial manipulation, or refusing to use their child's preferred pronouns. I feel like if the parents apologized, acknowledged the problem, and made a commitment to change it would make everyone happier. Not sure how that applies to your story, but that's been my experience.

My dad is hardcore conservative, identifies as independent. My mom was Democratic, she's now hardcore Republican to reflect the political views of her 4th husband.
I want so badly to just not see any family for Thanksgiving because their political views are so dramatically opposed to mine, but that just doesn't feel right in my heart.
Everyone I love supports things I'm ethically and morally against, but shit dude, my circle of people is already so small. I want to have family and friends in my life, but I also want to surround myself with people who share my values. Unfortunately I have to choose one over the other, and that feels dirty.
