A growing wave of transphobia and misogyny is building online. We all need to prepare ourselves for a rapidly changing status quo. You are not alone.
Like in 2016 a rising tide of conservatives emboldened by the Republican victory are starting to crop up online. Hate speech and random attacks directed at the trans community in online spaces will continue and most likely grow louder in the coming weeks. For our safety and mental health I encourage everyone to avoid online spaces that are not strictly moderated. Avoid social media where transphobia and misogyny are tolerated. The effect of constact exposure to hate speech is profound and horrific. We need to shelter ourselves from it as much as possible. I know it doesn't sound very brave to say that but its the truth. We need to look after each other of course, but first of all we have to look after ourselves.
Like everyone here I've been through a chaotic mess of emotions over the past couple days. I am furious, heartbroken, terrified, and sick with anxiety. I have picked apart everything thats happened in the past few months and tried to make sense of how this could happen. The hows and whys of it dont matter though. This is the reality we are confronted with and we have to exist within it. There is no use in praying for a different world. There is no use in lamenting the reality as it exists.
Trans people have made it through so many eras of open hostility towards us. Our community is built on the foundations laid by those who came before us. We persevere because of our solidarity, our empathy and our unity. We must now turn our attention to how we can fight back against this system. We must move our focus to how we can persist within a new world. Trans people still need hormones. We need ways out of hostile communities. We need protection and we need security. Our focus must change to how we can provide those things without the help of institutions. We need networks of supportive cisgender people throughout deep red states. We need supply chains for bringing hormones to people who cannot access them. We need communities online oriented around supporting our most vulnerable.
I am committed to this community supporting all of those efforts, and am looking to become personally involved in organizing efforts as time goes on. Channel your anger and your fear into action. Process your feelings together, support each other, and remember that youre not alone. We are not alone. Things aren't okay. They won't suddenly be okay tomorrow. But we can look after our community. We can push back. It's our duty to do so, for trans youth and vulnerable trans people who can't advocate for themselves and are subject to the whims of the system.
Just remember that anyone who enabled Trump, on both the right and the left, committed an act of violence against the LGBT community. Anyone who favored purity tests over your rights is not your friend. These communities, even on lemmy, should not be allowed to come back from this transgression.
Couple things. For one, don't tell queer people how to feel about political changes that result in negative consequences for us. Secondly, this post is literally about accepting the reality of the world that we now exist with in and focusing on how to support the trans community as the state becomes actively hostile towards us. Not about how to carry out revenge against "left communities who enabled trump." By which I take it, you're referring to anyone who criticized the DNC. We are not political pawns in a game between the right and the left. We are people deserving of human rights and safety. It is neither centrists nor the political right who offer us those things.
This is neither the time nor the place to promote a view of antagonism towards leftism. I was going to time you out for a week, but will abstain from doing so for now.
What? Am I being excluded from the queer community or something? I don't quite understand. Support for Trump is violence against me and all of my peers, whether it comes from the right or the left. This is my opinion, and i speak for nobody but myself. You are of course welcome to disagree?
You are welcome to your opinon, and I agree that support for Trump is itself an act of violence against trans people. I have not seen anyone on the left besides accelerationists, of whom there are very few, arguing in favor of voting for Trump. I have seen many people on the left criticizing the democratic party. Critcizing the DNC is not one and the same with supporting Trump.
You aren't being excluded here, you are welcome to voice your opinion, but you are not welcome to turn this post into a platform to call for users to view some other communities on lemmy in a particular way. There are lots of communities you can request brigading from, this just isn't one of them.
My human in christ we are all terrified and angry and looking for safe places to vent. I am sincerely sorry if my comments have interfered with the way you or anyone else is dealing with this, but to be honest I am quite upset with a broad cross section of my fellow humans in this case. However if you would prefer I take that frustration elsewhere then I understand.
I'm fine with people venting, but thats not the same thing as saying "Just remember that anyone who enabled Trump... on the left... committed an act of violence against the LGBT community... These communities, even on lemmy, should not be allowed to come back from this transgression.". Anyway, I've said what I will on it. You are welcome to continue to participate here, just not to do that.
