listening to weezer blue album 30 year anniversary. i have thoughts and i will post them
weezer 30 year anniversary review in as few words as possible - DISC 1
my name is jonas - not problematic but emblematic of the Weezer desire to be a boy man playing with toys
no one else - this one is like half an Across the Sea. the chorus is so fucked. i'm convinced Rivers Cuomo would keep a woman on a leash if he could get away with it as a public figure
the world has turned and left me here - i still love this one. i don't know if it's the instrumentation or knowing that Rivers Cuomo was sad when he wrote it but it's one of my favs off this album
buddy holly - I Am Sick Of Buddy Holly
undone (the sweater song) - i am also sick of this one but less so. i also don't like imagining Rivers Cuomo naked
surf wax america - it's not the same style as a Beach Boys song but it gives me the same feeling. i love this song so much, the "all along the undertow" part is my fav
say it ain't so - this song was very important to me as a kid and helped me process a lot of emotions. i'm sick of it now but it's good
in the garage - this is my favorite weezer boy man toy song. i still sing along to the chorus
holiday - vampire weekend had a better song called Holiday. this is a genuine 5/10 and is like drinking room temperature water, to me.
only in dreams - this is one of the standouts on this album and i love it to this day. it's just slow and meditative, you get to sit with it for like 7 minutes. dreamlike. perfect
my name is jonas live version - slow it down, weezer. for christ's sake. it was too much
in the garage live version - the organ on this one is fucking cool. i really like how they transformed the song
no one else live version - it sounds different and i would like to believe it's because Rivers Cuomo sees himself at age 50 still singing this song
surf wax america live version - i still love it :) good job to the fellas. edit: the organs make this song omg. what the fuck
buddy holly acoustic/live - imagine going to the shittiest party ever and you see people sitting in a circle singing buddy holly. that's this song
undone sweater song live acoustic - i actually really love them breaking down buddy holly from before at the beginning. the sound is very modest mouse. they are very sad and contemplative about the sweater, even 30 years later
oh shit it's an actual new remaster + extra stuff? will have to listen later. still one of my favourite albums despite the obvious issues... although i never did get into much of their other stuff.
hey, aside from all of this i thought of a funny thing. it's like Only in Dreams but Rivers Cuomo is like "you hawk up tuah, ask her if you could/you say hey baby, can i spit on your wood"
weezer 30 year anniversary review in as few words as possible - DISC 2
these are the kitchen tape demos so they're gonna be unfinished. that's ok.
say it ain't so (kitchen mode) - this one is more raw but honestly the chorus hits way harder than it has any right to. Rivers Cuomo is screaming i like the studio version more but it's nice to see some real emotion in this song after hearing middle aged weezer do it
the world has turned and left me here (kitchen mode) - honestly this one feels more contemplative. you can tell that it's a lonely ass song moreso than the studio version. honestly these demos are pretty good in that regard, just raw emotion. 90S ASS GUITAR SOLO IN HERE, THEY WERE PEARL JAMMING LOL
paperface (kitchen mode) - i have honestly never heard this one before. shoutout to Amy Moore who was apparently Rivers Cuomo's classmate? she did steal a car and bail to New Orleans which is absolutely the worst plan i've ever heard in my life. you're just gonna fuck up a freshly stolen car. anyway, the song is cool as hell and sounds like a nirvana b-side
undone (sweater man (kitchen mode)) - right off the bat you get these muddled voices that crescendo and then stop so Rivers can sing. i like this one less than the studio version but it's not bad. the parts where he isn't singing and people are just talking are cool as hell. it falls apart at the end, just like the sweater... damn.
thief, you've taken all that was me (kitchen mode) - first off, fall out boy ahh song title. secondly, i feel like Rivers Cuomo wrote some songs for Weezer and others for himself. this is one for himself. it feels like if you made a Title Fight song 60% less angry, i kinda love it
my name is jonas (kitchen mode) - the drums on this one are fucking amazing. it gives the song this kick that it doesn't have normally. i'm starting to get the feeling that Rivers Cuomo wants to be Bob Dylan in Eddie Vedder's body. yeah i thought about it while writing this and i like it way more than the studio version. you can tell everyone can stand up without doing the dad grunt on this one
let's sew our pants together (kitchen mode) - it's not great but it's not a stinker. this is one of those room temperature water songs for me
only in dreams (kitchen mode) - i love seeing my favorite songs come together and that's exactly what this is. some notes are off, it's raw as fuck but i'm along for the ride. even in its raw form, you can just close your eyes and imagine a screensaver to this shit.
i can't forget this way (third practice mode) - what the fuck. this song is wild. did they steal a song from Alice in Chains? what the fuck? what the fuck is happening? he's screaming now? what the fuck?
undone (sweater man (third mode) - ok so they have just tuned their guitars to My Bloody Valentine mode. Turok soundtrack ass guitars. if you don't get that reference, look it up, i don't care that you're 20-something. it's like the songs keep getting more unfinished as we continue down this path
the world has turned and left me here (third praccy mode) - so the guitars are still in My Bloody Valentine mode which makes this song sound fucking sinister. like a funhouse mirror version of the song. it's like the damn Joker wrote this song. it stinks but i kinda love it
windows down (garage praccy mode) - i get why this was cut. it's definitely something you'd hear at an open mic. honestly it might be more impressive at an open mic because they'd have to bring in a drum set for it. i wonder if the garage they're practicing in is the same one where Rivers plays with his toys
my name is jonas (grage pract mo) - i genuinely love that their guitars are tuned to make shoegaze but they're just singing Weezer songs. i might send Weezer a letter telling them to try it again but i wouldn't want any of them to get the wrong idea and think it was anything more than that. i've heard that song before and i did not appreciate it.
only in dreams (garage praccy mode) - lmao the guitars sound so fucking heavy in this one. tune those b-words up please. it's cool to hear them figuring out their sound though and i could listen to this song a million times in a row, even when it's at 20% like this version. HE LITERALLY DOES A BOB DYLAN VOICE ON THIS ONE BTW LMAO
superman (lagrange praccy) - omg. opening line is "i will be her superman"... how old is Rivers in 1992. one second. he was 22 years old singing this lyric. man what the fuck.
dawn sets upon us (grag pracy mod) - this actually sounds like a Weezer song which is refreshing. honestly pretty ok, room temperature water though. Alice in Chains guitars are actually pretty nice on this one. ok now it's a Pearl Jam song. this is fucking confusing
just what i needed (rehearsal mode) - this is just a weezer cover of a song you've probably heard on a commercial. i appreciate it though because i try to have nostalgia for eras i never lived through. honestly the harmonization is a lot of fun and you can tell they're just fucking with it which is nice to hear after a lot of self-serious stuff
buddy holly (rhersul mod) - I AM SICK OF BUDDY HOLLY!!!!!!!!! FUCK
