Do you have a vasectomy? Why or why not?

Yes: I had a pregnancy scare with a girl when I was in my 20s. She didn’t want kids, I was in love with her, and Washington had free vasectomies at the time. It was fast, fairly painless and prevented unwanted pregnancies
Fast forward 20 years when I realized I wanted kids. Turns out vasectomies are incredibly expensive to get reversed, there’s a tiny window in which it’s viable, and every other option for having kids (adoption, surrogacy) is incredibly out of reach

- That's very nearly my story. My ex wanted me to get one back in college. I wanted kids, so, that should have been a sign that things wouldn't work out. Fortunately, I did not go through with it. Still don't have any children. Still want them but, not in the cards right now.
  Had thought about getting one more recently but the cost and middling success rate for reversal makes that a non-option for someone who still thinks they want kids.

Got one >25 years ago. I had complications because I was dumb enough to help a friend change a tire less than 30 minutes after it was done, but the complications were just mildly inconvenient rather than painful.
I did it for multiple reasons; my ex-wife was on medication for a seizure disorder that would cause serious birth defects if she got pregnant, so pregnancy was completely off the table. By that point I'd also realized that I would not be a good parent. (I was diagnosed as being autistic about a decade ago; that's probably why I'm usually in my own world, which isn't a great trait in a parent.) I think that, with insurance, it cost about $100 at the time, which was expensive, but not outrageously so.
I have zero regrets, and I have zero children.

Yes, got mine after my 2nd kid was born. Definitely a good choice for me and my wife. Neither of us like condoms and every horminal birth control she's taken has caused more problems than they were worth.
- Same, after the second kid. We never use condoms, she was always on the pill, and its easier for me to get that snip and be done than have her deal with that fun all the time.

It's medically dangerous for my SO to get pregnant, plus we live in a conservative state so the danger is much higher.
Pro tip: make sure your doctor believes you when you say you aren't numb.

Got mine in my late 20s! Huge fan. A good part of it was really that I've never dated a person who has had great experiences with birth control. Also, y'know, creampies are hot.

Got one in my early 30s. Wish I'd done it sooner! It's a scary step to sterilize yourself, even if you're sure you never want kids, but not only have I had no regrets, my appreciation continued to grow to this very day. I swear, any man without a vasectomy is a damn fool. Even if I wanted kids, knowing what I know now, I'd STILL have gotten one even sooner and tried to foster and adopt instead.

I had one done at 27 because I ever wanted kids. Had to fight with some doctors before one agreed to do it at that age. Unfortunately, insurance didn’t cover it, and I had to pay around 600€. But the ease of mind is priceless. I can only recommend getting a vasectomy to everyone who’s thinking about it!

Yes. Got it when I was 24. Appointment happened to be on a Valentines day. Didn't have kids, didn't want kids. Nearly 20 years later, still don't have kids, still don't want kids. Total cost was a $20 copay.
For some reason I had some pain during cauterization, which isn't supposed to be possible, so maybe it was in my head. Other than that, no side effects.

I have multiple partners, so condoms are mandatory for STI prevention. And even if a condom breaks, my SO takes the pill (for hormonal reasons) and my other partners are men. So, there's no risk of pregnancy.

My mate had a botched vasectomy a few years back, they even tried again and couldn't get it done for some reason.
I still brought over a bag of frozen peas and a 'sorry for your loss' card for him though.

I got one as soon as Roe v. Wade was overturned, but I have already thought a long while about it due to having bad lungs, a bad heart, and bad eyes. My parents have to be cousins, I swear....best decision I ever made though, that peace of mind is unmatched.

I got it done at 35, it went pretty well and I was into work that night with an ice pack on my nuts. I booked it when I had a month of desk work instead of being on the floor doing lifting.
There was a small complication, I had swelling in one testes and had to go in a month later to get an anti-inflammatory injection directly into the ball, it is still a bit more large in the epididymis.

  Is epididymis issues a common side. Feel like I'm playing with fire if I have had issues before doing anything that might make those issues worse.

Yes. When we had our last kid my wife got her tubes tied and told the doctor that she was getting me fixed as well. He said, "That isn't necessary." and she replied, "Yes, it is." She wanted to make sure that I didn't get anyone else pregnant. Apparently I'm a dog.

Yes, early 20s. Very positive experience, in and out of the doctor's room in under 5 minutes. Took longer to fill out the paperwork.

Been thinking about it, but read too many horror stories about recovery. Don't know who to trust anymore.
They said tonsils removal would be okay,.wisdom teeth removal would be fine. Both were atrocious experiences.
I'm afraid of anything remotely like that for my downstairs.
- I'm one of those "horror stories", the 3% who have post-procedure pain (dull ache) for the 1st year, and 5% of those whose pain continues after.
  And still, no regrets. The occasional dull ache is SO worth the benefits.
- There is a certain risk to it, yes, but it’s really low. And you can (and should) always talk to your doctor about all the things you are worried about.
  One thing you should definitely make sure of is that your doctor has a lot of experience performing vasectomies. You want to find one that does them frequently and ideally has been doing them for years.
  For me, getting my wisdom teeth removed was worse than getting my vasectomy. But I guess it’s different for every person.
  I’m sure in the end the risk of you regretting not getting one earlier is much greater than the risk of something going wrong with the surgery.

Yes 1.5 years ago. Not bad but I do have dull ball pain if ejac frequency is greater than every 48 hours. Not a big deal for me approaching 40. But overall would not recommended to anyone in their 20’s or early 30’s with a high libido.

  It’s fairly common for closed tubes, and less common but not too rare for open-ended procedures.

I'm not sure if it is common, it is just sometimes a bit more solid and sensitive maybe because the swimmers now escape into the scrotum and get absorbed instead of going down the tubes.
I'm not a doctor so I don't know I just don't let anyone bite them anymore. All other functions are working fine, other than the being fertile thankfully.

  Open-Ended Vasectomy Technique
  Our doctors perform an “open-ended” vasectomy technique, where the vas from the lower end of the tube is left open, while the upper end of the tube leading to the penis is cut and then separated by the fascial sheath barrier. Historically, the lower end was closed off during a vasectomy because it was thought that leaving the lower end open could cause more complications or failures.
  Instead, when the bottom end of the vas deferens is allowed to remain open, complications and failures are not increased. In fact, there appears to be less chance of post vasectomy pain and a higher chance of successful vasectomy reversal in the future. Specifically, when the lower end of a vasectomy is closed off, some patients experience build up pressure in the lower end and this pressure can cause swelling and inflammation in the epididymis, especially in the first 2 weeks.
  With an open ended approach, sperm is allowed to “leak out” and eventually forms a small granuloma at the opening that serves as a metabolically active “recycling” centre that decompresses the epididymis.
  This constant recycling and removal of sperm may relieve pressure build up downstream, reduce damage, and increase vasectomy reversal success.

Yes I have a vasectomy. I have two sons and my partner and I were done having kids. The procedure was easy and mostly painless. Healing was quick. The worst part was after I scheduled it I for calls asking why I was getting the procedure and asking a lot of invasive questions, for the record I live in Iowa.

Had one in my early 30s. No regrets at all. Highly recommend to anyone thinking about it

Wanted one for a while now only reason I haven't is because I'm too lazy to register at a doctors near to me and for some stupid reason I can't self refer myself for it and have to visit a doctor to do that part for me.

I personally wouldn’t do it. I don’t plan on having any more kids, but what if we get into a post-apocalyptic scenario and the fate of mankind depends on me impregnating as many women as possible, repeatedly?I become like some farm animal, just spending my days constantly breeding, just exhausted from all the routine sex. It would be selfish of me to deny my sperm to so many women.

Yes I got one in 2010. Never looked back. No kids. The vasectomy helped dodge three HUGE bullets of women who wanted to baby trap me.

Nope. My partner had a hysterectomy. I would have no questions asked, but it isn't necessary

If it would be free/covered by insurance I'd do it tomorrow.
