Honestly I have never been so accepting of the armed forces as when Mattis openly shunned Trump.
Not just Mattis. He tried to order the active duty military to go after protestors in D.C. They reminded him of their oath and the Posse Comitatus Act. At volume. In the Oval Office. Then they released a force wide memo reminding everyone their oath was to the Constitution, not the President.
He's never forgiven the military for that.

The "task force" political office won't be looking for "woke." They'll be looking to identify and remove generals who won't follow illegal orders.

The US military has specifically benefited from diversity and inclusivity programs in recent years. The actual size of the US military force is comparatively smaller than in the past, and being more inclusive has benefited the institution in the concrete way of just having a larger number of potential enlistees to pull from.
I'm all for reducing the size of the US military, but to be clear that's the only effect this will have.

Great plan… use diversity training as a tool to identify generals who might not be loyal, purge them and put stooges in place. This has worked out really well for Russias military.
This working out great for the Russian military could be the reason behind the plan.
