fairly minor thing, but can you detect from sync whether a home instance allows downvotes? mine does not, but sync still displays the unusable downvote button on everything
A way to view groups of multiple communities in a single feed. Like a multicommunity. A workaround right now is to have multiple accounts, which is less than ideal.
A way to view content from multiple accounts in a single feed. Like a universal feed.
An easier way to have the same settings apply to multiple accounts.
When browsing "local" or "all", it would be nice to have some kind of indicator next to the community name to let you know if you've already subscribed or not. I browse "all" sometimes looking for new communities to sub to and I click through to find out I'm already subbed often.
I think something as simple as being able to set a different color for subbed communities would work well and be enough to stand out at a glance.
My biggest feature request is an option to view upvotes and downvotes separately rather than as one combined number. Ideally the current combined method would remain an option as well.
Last time I tried using the spoiler tag, I got multiple people responding telling me sync used syntax different from what Lemmy standard is. Not sure if that's been fixed yet, but sounds like an easy one.
To see a list of all communities on an instance. Unless I'm being dumb, I don't see this feature yet. And a subscribe button next to each community in the list
Something that only makes sense on lemmy and not Reddit, but I think it would be cool to explore a combined account view. With defederation I've now ended up with multiple accounts that can all see different things. Could be nice to combine my beehaw and lemmy.world subscriptions view together.
Have a global setting for not sharing the post title by default when I want to directly share an image from the app. It's come unstuck and turned back on for me a couple times.
I also wanted to say the only reason I'm using lemmy at all is because of your app; I'm a big fan. As soon as your app turned off for Reddit, I quit using Reddit. I'm glad that you turned to this community, and I'll support you here too :)
Side note: I'm a software developer, so if you ever want an enhancement in an open-source library, maybe reach out and I can take a crack at it. I'm mostly familiar with Python and C# but I'm always willing to learn new things!
A way to group subscribed communities into a single 'subscription'. I can then associate all the tech related stuff into one clickable item, and all my sports related stuff etc.
Viewing a user profile should have the option to see "posts/comments" together, and should default to it, just like Sync for Reddit. Thanks for all your hard work!
Not sure if it's a setting I've missed, but I use top 6 hour for the front page, which is great, but then when clicking into a post it still uses top 6 hour, which generally shows little activity or replies, until I then have to change it to active etc to see the whole thread. Am I just being dumb?
filters with a timeout (filters that disappear after a while). The filter might remain in a list of filters and can be reset again (or gets deleted after timeout). This would be a middle ground between blocking certain things completely and not at all.
weighing of certain communities. A weight of 0 would be the same as blocking. A weight of 1 doesn't change anything. A Weight of 0.5 would multiply the upvotes of posts by 0.5 in order to change its position on the frontpage. ( I am not sure how exactly the rank is determined, but weighing certain meme-communities lower would be nicer than completely blocking them - i like a nice stupid meme from time to time.
am not sure how this could work on reality, son this might not have a perfect solution though.
User tagging similar to Reddit Enhancement Suite. Specifically keeping a count of up/down votes of other users and displaying next to their comments. Also when tagging users it saves a link to the comment causing you to tag them.
The current user tagging feature is the largest reason I subscribe to sync Ultra. It's really one of the only things that helped out with the spam aside from keeping to smaller communities.
As far as issues, I experience occasional crashes (once or twice per day, maybe) when opening images. I haven't found a pattern as-yet but I will try to take note of an example next time it happens.
For new features, maybe push notifications of new messages?
Would like an "overview" when going on mine or someone else's profile so posts and comments are mixed. Saves me clicking through each and giving better context.
I have four suggestions that I didn't mention in our previous talk:
1._ Swipe to upvote/downvote the main post in the comment section.
2._ Subscribed mark/icon for communities in the feeds or the new instances view to quickly know if we are already subscribed to such communities.
3._ In the Explore section the subbed users count only show up in unsubscribed communities, it would be nice if it shows In your subscribed communities as well.
4._ Ability to browse per instances in other sections (like when we are inside a community)
I would love a Scroll to top button when browsing an instance, or to have an option to Subscribe without scrolling all the way to the top. I tend to visit a new instance, check out a couple pages, and then subscribe. But by then the Subscribe button is really far away.
It's a small QOL suggestion, a "Previous" and "Next" comment button when traversing through comments.
I used to use RIF prior to coming to Lemmy Sync and always liked being able to jump from comment to comment.
Can we have notifications about replies/messages at least when opening the app up? (It doesn't have to poll all the time for them, but hourly polling or something can be an option).
Does the floating navigation bar exist on the Lemmy app? I feel like I had it at one point but I could be mistaken. I love being able to just from parent to parent comment on some threads.
On behalf of all the perverts out there, how about a toggle filter for only showing NSFW posts. Would be nice for...ahem... "discovery" on the everything feed.
It also prevents sharing the actual redgifs link easily cause you need to open it in the browser and then share the link. Otherwise it shares the API link.
Double dipping with the answers, but it would be awesome if we could toggle filters on and off. My list of filtered communities is enormous (40+ just for various sports teams I don't care to see on the everything feed), but if like to sometimes disable all filters just to see how the standard experience looks.
I imagine a toggle for each filter category (instance, community, users...)
I cannot connect to discuss.online as a home site from Sync at the moment, though I can browse it from other home sites. It is not an issue unique to me. The admins of the instance have come to the conclusion it is a lemmy/3p client issue rather than an instance issue, and that clients it breaks now will break more completely with future lemmy rollouts.
Change logo to indicate the lemmy connection..This is not at all a serious request, just a personal request fuelled by OCD to get everything as connected as possible.
Sometimes, when scrolling, I get "Your filters have blocked all the posts on this page" or "You have read all the posts on page 17" or whatever.
The pop-up gives either a "Next page" or a "Retry" button (IIRC). When I press it, I'm able to continue just fine.
Can there be a setting added (or something) that just auto-presses that button for me? I'm cool with just scrolling forever, and it seems a little silly that I get stopped by that prompt but pressing 1 little button fixes it.
Sometimes images don't allow me to resize them. Closing and reopening the image fixes it, but I don't know what causes it initially. More a minor annoyance than anything, but I still wanted to bring attention to it since I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere.
There are two horribly synergistic bugs on my favorite NSFW instance, lemmynsfw(dot)com:
Sync's community filters don't work on that instance, and that instance's community blocks don't work either! They're not related, I'm sure, but when both are broken I see things I can't unsee.
I built up a huge list of community filters in the app, and then one day realized not a single one was working. Not even if I cleared the whole list and added just one filter. Refreshing didn't help. Nor did clearing the cache. At least, I think I tried that.
And, for some reason, Blocks don't work on that instance either, but only when requesting my feed through the API. Blocks do work on the website itself. But that's not your issue. That's theirs.
I'd like the ability to open an account in a different window. Like how you can long press on a community and it opens in a new window, but with for accounts. Would make it easier than switching accounts and losing your position
I have "hide read posts" enabled on the Lemmy side, through the desktop page.
When I go to my profile on Lemmy's website, I don't see any posts I've made (which makes sense, I've read every post I've ever written), but I do see all my comments in the comment section of a read post.
For some reason, on Sync it doesn't show the posts or the comments. My profile is completely empty unless I go into the settings on my Lemmy instance and toggle the "hide read" setting.
Collapsing entire comment threads. It can be hard to read the top-level comments in each thread when you have to scroll through. Being able to collapse a top-level comment and all replies to that comment in one button press would help with this.
Not a terribly important feature, but I'd like to be able to create multiple instances of a view type, each of which has its own configuration, and be able to switch between them with a quick action.
My phone is so wide that it's difficult to hit the thumbnails in the list view when I hold the phone in the opposite hand (right hand with thumbnails on the left vs. left hand with thumbnails on the right). This feature would allow me to quickly switch the view :)
Am I missing a easy one-button to crosspost something from one community to another? If not, then that would be pretty handy.
I know there's share, and I love how much flexibility there is in the share button already, but as a bit of a noob a simple one button crosspost button would be nice. Especially if it has some automated best-practice type settings for the message and media like linking to original post, maybe tagging as a crosspost etc.
Bit of a noob, and even on Reddit was a long time lurker so I always get a bit anxious at how I should be crossposting "correctly".
You could even sneak in some tagging or a formulaic note in the messages to make it easy for Sync to merge duplicate posts found on multiple communities.
I noticed that saved items are ordered by their post date, not by their saved date like on Reddit Sync. This makes it super hard to find the latest ones you saved.
Please make Sync compatible with Lemmy v0.19. lemmy.sdf.org updated to v0.19 and Sync no longer works for me. I'm having to use a different app in the meantime.
Small thing but I'd love some metadata about the comment or post when I'm replying. Things like the time it was posted, username and maybe even subreddit with the instance. The full thread for nested comments would maybe be nice but maybe the ui for scrolling through that would be messy.
I think that getting support for 0.19 working is a bit important now, since many smaller instances seem to be taking the plunge and upgrading to the beta, so being able to login and support lemmy instances with the new auth protocols is very important.
I'd love to be able to adjust line spacing in the body text of posts, like I'm able to do for the comments. Also, now that I'm writing this, I'm noticing that it would be nice to have that in this reply composition screen too. But maybe I just haven't found that one?
Setting a default filter mode for comments. I could find a way to do this in settings, so maybe I'm missing something, but I'd expect it to be the same as default filtering for posts.
Restoring the broken filters and fixing the missing saved content bug. But even more important you should be improving your build process' release cycle so you can push out fixes out before new features. I don't want more fluff right now, I want the app I paid for to work as advertised. It's been a month and I'm starting to consider other free competitors.
2 old features I liked from the reddit version. Probably going to be quite low priority versus some other things, but they're the missing things I'm noticing most.
The little "next / previous comment" arrows. Worked very well for skipping comment chains when you're already a bit into them.
The little "+#" count next to the total comments to show how many new comments have popped up in a post. Combined with the unread comment dot it made keeping track of new comments on a thread I liked nice.
I miss the navigation buttons I had on RIF. Each comment had a next and previous button which would jump the focus to the next or previous comment. Replies had a go-to-parent button
Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, have an incorrect setting, or if this is expected behavior, but the thing that's been driving me nuts is when I go to share a link it always copies the source of the post for the lemmy link.
If, for example, I'm browsing on lemmy.ml and I want to share a post from lemmy.world, I'd like to be able to copy the lemmy.ml version of the lemmy.world post.
It doesn't make as much sense with public instances, but when you're using a private instance and you want to share with friends and family it can be kind of a hassle to retrieve the URL for said private instance.
I have no idea how this works so hopefully this isn't too wild but it would be neat to be able to use the app with kbin (a kbin account from a kbin instance, not just look at kbin content is what I mean)
Edit: nvm i see someone else already suggested it and you responded, should've checked first
It would be super helpful if we can hide entire instances from showing up at an individual level. For e.g. I see a lot of posts from feddit.de - I don't have anything bad against the server or the users, but the posts there add no value to my experience and fill up my feed with content I'll simply not understand. It would be a better UX to be able to hide these without having the home instance and other users on it be affected by your preference.
Thank you for this amazing app!
I'd like to be able to download images to my Downloads folder. I'm on Android 12 and currently I cannot select it. It shouldn't be an issue since newer Android versions don't even require write permissions for that.
Any progress on WebM support? Not sure about other instances, but mine converts GIFs to WebM by default when I upload from Sync. But posts with WebM just act like still images in Sync, and tapping on them just leads to a button to open the WebM in a browser.
In app YouTube player like Reddit Sync had. Drives me nuts when I inadvertently click a YouTube link and it takes me to the YouTube app. It's a pain to get back to Lemmy.
Also, I think I remember a check box on Reddit Sync's in app browser to disable cookies or clear on close or something. That would be nice to have back.
I haven't seen other people report this, but for me if you click on comments then hit back it won't take you to the page you clicked on the comment link from, but rather the previous one. So if I was on page 2, go into comments then click' back' I'd end up on page 1.
Hey Lj! Been loving Sync for Lemmy so far. I would really appreciate an option for auto hiding read content, instead of having to go to select Hide Read every time I start the app or refresh.
@ljdawson To be able to connect to Sync for Lemmy from a Mastodon account.
Of course with limitations due to interoperability (only being able to upvote, reply, or create a post) This would also maybe provide a large user base for the application
Honestly, not sure. I've been going to the community I want to block and hitting block at the top, but that doesn't remove posts from that community from the everything page. It was working for a bit but doesn't anymore.
You do great work!! Sync has been my most used app for longer than I remember.
Any chance for some tweaks for tablets and foldables?
• I think it would be nice to be able to hide the navigation rail. It feels like a lot of wasted space. The FAB can do everything the rail can while being better looking and easier to reach.
• Maybe more column settings for view types (for folded/unfolded)? I like a single column on the outside screen, 2 columns on the inner screen in portrait, and 3 columns on the inner screen in landscape. This is possible in Infinity for Lemmy. But Infinity, as a whole, is not nearly as polished as your app.
I currently use Infinity on my Fold's outer display for single column viewing and Sync on the inner display with tablet mode disabled to avoid the navigation rail. These tweaks would be awesome for foldable users (all 10 of us) so we could get a better use of space while also enjoying the tablet mode features.
I can only find an option to block the community, not the instance. Blocking|hiding communities individually is tedious when you're trying to personalize your feed
I know that before, when I shared a picture via text say, there was an option to not have the post title accompany said picture. I'd like to have that again.
Oh, and maybe the ability to view media @ catbox ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I think something that would be beneficial to Lemmy (and hence Sync) would be if the entire community name (such as !syncforlemmy@lemmy.world) be displayed in the preview.
I love long pressing an image to view and sliding my finger down to the options at the bottom to copy, view in browser, etc. Would be nice if download was one of those quick actions.
I would like it if a community would remember the sorting I selected. Some communities I prefer to read sorted by newest. Others I like to read top last 12 hours.
My lemmy instance doesn't allow uploading of images at all. It would be awesome to have a setting that would change the add image function from uploading and image, to providing text boxes for alt text and link instead and have it automatically add the syntax to embed the image in the comment:
A feature I would love to have is Auto load next page if a full page of results is filtered. With some communities getting fed content by posting bots that load a chunk of posts all at once, I often hit instances while browsing /all where multiple pages will be empty due to filters. It would be great if the app just loaded the next page automatically in these instances instead of having to manually load the next page.
This isn't really a feature suggestion, but rather a quality of life improvement.
Lately I've been getting a lot of messages saying "All posts hidden on page ### - RETRY" due to having to have so many filters on Lemmy to hide whole communities.
Just this morning I had to hit retry about 6-7 times in a row because there were 6-7 pages on posts completely filtered out..
Had the same issue on sync for reddit but it wasn't as noticeable since filters weren't required as much. On Lemmy it's a staple and kind of annoying once you have a fair bit of communities filtered out.
I would really love to see a "Comment Score" and/or a "Post Score" (or even an "Total Score") like other Lemmy apps do (Like Voyager). Like how Reddit does karma where you can see total upvotes on all a user's content.
Not necessary but my monkey brain firmly believes that bigger number = better person.
