One of the few things they did right in Kelvin timeline imo. Just makes sense if you lose inercial dampeners, which is like all the time, that you'd want to be strapped in going like 300c or during a Blue Alert.
It's sort of like before they made the seat belt laws. Ships had them but a lot of people were like, eh, I've been fine without them this long.
The Enterprise-E had seatbelts
