Invasive species are a net negative if left alone because they outcompete surrounding species. This leads to reduced biodiversity because nothing can specialize quickly enough to fill gaps left by the disappearance of native species.
Hate when I have a healthy plant (luckily haven't seen many bad bugs), and learn I should kill it. Happening a lot where I moved to right now. Old owners (one of which i think was a cop lol) planted a bunch of stuff, some of which is banned in other states for how bad they are.
Killed a bush and replaced it with a native this season. Was very sad but had to be done.
That was me. I think rule of thumb from ppl who know what theyāre talking about is still invasive species gotta go sadly, even though that is also probably still true (not as bad as thought) :( lantern boys are both beautiful and cute though why why why
Donāt kill it leave it be, itās not your choice to kill a creature. Thereās a lot of propaganda going around about āinvasive speciesā invasive species exist because of the conditions humans have put them through, the reason these alleged invasive species turn up where you live is part of a larger issue. Killing them is like owning the electric car and thinking youāre helping reduce climate emissions, we are already fucked. That and itās attached to Sinophobia since those species are native to china, itās just another way to manufacture consent for hatred of Chinese. There are a plethora of other āinvasiveā species that exist all around you but they donāt get as much attention as they do lantern flies.
Pisses me off that farms can use deadly pesticides killing off bugs and other flaura yet the moment they see a lantern fly everyone loses their minds.
The world is getting hot. Get used to seeing more āinvasive speciesā
I think it's fine to kill invasive species, just because it's going to get worse doesn't mean you just give up.
Those invasive species are going to lead to the death of native species, and when that doom spiral happens you've really gone and fucked the ecosystem.
Same logic behind eating invasive Asian carp; if you don't kill it it will kill a native species.
Itās funny that with no proof provided that lantern flies are a danger to domestic flaura, except that one (CIATimes) article demanding people squish the bugs with a lengthy full page worth of where the flies originated from (China) itās just another massive propaganda drive to promote Sinophobia. Sure itās as ālittle as swatting a flyā but that rhetoric still persists in the minds of those who donāt necessarily attempt any critical thinking.
Regardless the fact many more of these species will be introducing themselves to your homes within the coming years because of climate change, you still think that you can control nature? Itās honestly quite astounding the amount of people defending murdering innocent creatures because they are labeled āinvasiveā. I have a small garden of vegetables and herbs on my window, I also have families of lantern bugs living amongst the flaura, I gather about 70% yield which is still enough for me to be happy with. Where do these horror stories that āinvasive species badā come true.
You canāt be both sides of the the argument. You canāt be against climate change yet pro irradication of an āinvasive speciesā the same way you canāt be pro invasive species yet against climate change being the cause. Climate change is the cause, and you will see more and more and more of these species seeking refuge where you live.
Another analogy, are you willing to let an immigrant family into your home? Or will you listen to the government and shut your doors to them because they are alleged āinvasiveā
Bad bit, invasive species are incredibly damaging to local ecosystems oftentimes causing mass die offs, if not extinctions, of local flora and fauna. See round gobies, Asian carp, and zebra mussels in the great lakes. More often than not invasive species are introduced accidentally into ecosystems by humans, they are not naturally migrating there.
We do see migrations of animals further north as the climate warms like armadillos and deer ticks in the Americas but these are not treated as invasive species. Similarly, species not native to an ecosystem but have become naturalized and are therefore not as damaging are not treated as invasive, like European starlings, dandelions, and pigeons in North America.
Now from a Vegan POV I don't know what the best solution to invasive species would be. I have heard some vegans make the argument that invasive species control is better as it results in less animal death overall but it is difficult.
being for animal liberation and against mass animal enslavement and cruelty doesnāt mean that culling animals is never necessary, just as being for human liberation and against human enslavement and cruelty doesnāt mean that itās never necessary to cull fascists
and stopping animal extinction, like stopping genocide, can make it necessary to do some killing
the āalways let animals be and wreck the environmentā is shit like āisntreal has the right to defend itselfā
that said, human intervention has to be carefully thought out to not cause harm, and sometimes not intervening can be the best course of action
That isnāt my point. The invasive species are a product of a man made cause which is forcing various species to seek alternative habitats due to the conditions created by the burgeroise and their endless quest for nonrenewable resources / wealth.
āInvasiveā is a byproduct of the shifts in climate that we donāt take into consideration, the āinvasiveā species turning up and ruining new ecosystems is within itself because of the fact their ecosystems were destroyed in the first place. It baffles me because you donāt question the habitats before the migration, the issue now is ātheyāre in my habitat and must be destroyed.ā
Its like the analogy of voting the lesser evil as if youāll ever get your utopia out of them, the climate is destroyed, yes there is a 60 year buffer but if we are seeing species that have traveled across the pond and they are flourishing in our habitat that is less likely an issue of āinvasive speciesā itās the larger issue regarding the ever increasing speed at which climate is destroying entire ecosystems.
