Alive and still quite vigorous considering its age
Is it crazy to fantasize about having sync also be a Usenet reader? On the surface the federated space seems similar and it would open up some interesting content.

Yes. Basically any email client would translate better to a Usenet client.
Reddit and Lemmy have a fundamentally different way to structure content and interactions compared to Usenet.
