  • It looks like that cross post is deleted now or their server exploded.

I did this by accident though. I bought Minecraft like right in the beta stage. I used to buy or play a ton of alpha/beta releases when I was younger, early 20s, and bought a bunch of games that I either didn't like that much (Minecraft) or outright hated (I was in the league of legends alpha. I declared the game to be dogshit and said it wouldn't go anywhere. So, never ask me for investing advice. Although I was technically correct then and remain vindicated by time on that one!).

I forgot about the game for the most part for a solid decade after the purchase, which was only like $5 or maybe $10, honestly don't remember. 2011 dollareedoos. Then fucking Microsoft started spamming my unchecked "shit I never want to hear from" email that mojang was linked with saying I had to migrate my account, blahblah, I ignored them for years. I was eventually able to link it with my main Microsoft account which is solely used as a throwaway for Windows because fuck Microsoft.

There's a bunch of game I bought way back in the day from 2006-maybe 2012 or so that the sites are now defunct or online services are totally non-existent. I remember back then, that general time range, there was a decent anti-Valve/Steam sentiment online and I definitely actively avoided the platform for years because of "if Valve goes under, how will I access my library of digital games?" Well, we all got beaten down on that front. It doesn't help that the only other launchers on PC are fucking EA (I'm puking) and Ubisoft (I no puke left to give). Blizzard has their own thing which is mostly just annoying. Epic has one that was doing a decent job forcing competition, I guess, but it's still Epic. And Microsoft also has one but I basically refuse on principle to use Microsoft's first party stuff like their store. Long story long here, somehow Valve turned out to be the least piece of shit of the pieces of shit. And now concerns over digital ownership are never really discussed at all and even if you do discuss it... what are you gonna do about it? You either participate in this shit where you're at the whims of Microsoft or Valve, etc. or you don't participate (or you 🏴‍☠️ 😎)

I haven't given money to valve in probably almost a decade at this point, the migraine that is using steam combined with piracy has made this terrifically easy.

Gabe Newell personally intervened to allow a right wing mass shooting game to be sold on steam, the mod workshop just locks mods to a storefront for monopolization, as if that wasn't enough they also attempted to monetize mods, valve was one of the pioneers in microtransactions, the whole gamification of leveling up from buying shit is just typical predatory garbage that's plaguing the industry now (would not be surprised if they were also among the first to do stuff like this either), an employee revealed that there was an internal "dispute" over whether they should voice support for BLM, and just recently steam had a "celebration of capitalism" sale - this year the ocean temperature so far has literally broken records everyday if I'm not mistaken.

This is not to mention that steam has negative standards for what is allowed to be on the storefront, to the point that they allowed an extremely low quality game with nazi talking points spewed in a monologue to be sold. I also personally suspected that it was made with intent to target children but I doubt there's any way to prove that. There's probably a lot more that I'm missing since I thankfully do not use that piece of shit of a storefront outside of a friend wanting me to, like I'm pretty sure all of the community stuff is riddled with unchecked bigotry. Also just using steam sucks and from what I remember is pretty much on par with the ea/ubisoft storefront.

      • Honestly, given my admitted age (not that I'm super old, but, you know...), I haven't kept up on ol' "GabeN" for over a decade now at least. And even back then he was effectively a meme to my eye. From what I can tell now days though you're probably correct with the store fronts all sucking. Steam always felt like it was, and this is an unquantifiable thing based purely on my vibes, more streamlines, leaner, packed with less... bullshit I suppose.

But anyway, of course when it comes to companies and capitalists generally they're all doing terrible shit in pursuit of profit. All I meant really was Steam turned out to be at least palatable and offer a service that felt mostly positive at the end as opposed to EA's client mostly and the Ubisoft one.
