Scott Pilgrim Takes Off creators Bryan Lee O'Malley and BenDavid Grabinski tell us more about one particular new casting, and why they "couldn't have done it" without that star.
“People online are like, ‘Scott's the worst character. Scott's the villain of his own story,' ” said O’Malley. “They really love to harp on that now, which no one mentioned in the 2000s. But yeah, so we thought let's give them Scott as the villain of his own story, let's do it proper.”
Having never read the novels, but being a fan of the film, I was looking forward to this series.
I read the original comic on paperback in black and white, went to launch parties for the releases, then bought it in colour, lost both sets in moves, bought it all in digital form, then again in a physical box set when I settled down. Saw the movie several times in theatres and own the original bluray and then 4K release bluray as well. I also bought Lost at Sea and Seconds as my first gifts to my now wife.
Suffice to say, I’m a fan of the series and the creator.
I fucking loved the new spin on it. So so so much. I loved getting to explore some of the other characters who didn’t get as much spotlight in previous adaptations. I loved the whodunnit we got to explore with Ramona, who is much closer to the Ramona of the books than the movie, and I felt was a welcome change, even if the portrayer (who I still love) was the same. The Easter eggs and hints for the fans of the series were great as well.
The one thing I kept looking for, hoping for, waiting for .. where the fuck is Lisa Miller.
Yes! I've got a pretty similar history with the series as you. Really enjoyed it. Loved being thrown the curve ball and seeing where it went. But, likewise, I also wondered where Lisa was. I guess maybe she wouldn't have bumped into Scott at the mall and just gone about her merry way.
What about the video game? Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is arguably the best local multiplayer game ever, and it even had a ton of references to the comics that the movie never had.
