Outside of city centers in my state it's almost 20% less per hour. Sure, the housing is cheaper, but other goods cost the same. That's 20% less money to spend on groceries, cell phone bill, gas, car payment, etc. Also, moving out of the city, I would have to get a car again to get anywhere, instead of using the bus. It doesn't always make sense to just drop everything and move to the burbs.
Yeah, it always depends on your field, there's also big cities that are cheaper than others, where I'm at housing in the fifth city by population is at least 50% cheaper than in the first city and salaries aren't that different.
this isn't about cities. there's not a single US state where you can afford a two bedroom on a full time minimum wage salary. And for 93% of US counties, you can't afford a one bedroom
Money, services, and better job quality are all found in cities. Rural is physical labor and bad pay. It usually also smells like either a farm or chemicals for those rural jobs too.
Spoken like someone who never got out of the city they live in.
You realise that there's many steps between major city centers and bum fuck nowhere, right?
In a town of around 10k you'll have everything you need to spend your whole life there if you want.
People like you act so smug towards the people who bring food to your table, extract the minerals necessary for you to have access to the internet, cut the wood used to build the furniture you've got... Cities don't exist without rural areas, rural areas continue sustaining themselves without cities.
spoken like someone who never left the town of 10k
people like you act so smug to the people who make the tools or services you use. rural areas without cities are Bronze Age sustenance farming towns that die the second there is a bad harvest.
You clearly never went to a small town to say that their tools come from major city centers. They try to do everything by themselves without relying on the big cities to the point where it can be frustrating to see them work with a local welder or machinist instead of simply buying the premade tool they actually need.
How does a city of millions provide rural areas with food when there's a bad harvest exactly? Name one city of 100k or more that is self sustaining in food and doesn't do any long distance import for it.
and I grew up in about the middle of nowhere in a region that was agr and tourism (and was not in a family that works in "hospitality"), ad honestly, the place was dead as far as actually having possibility outside these two sectors, or anything to do but drink after work is done.
No food is produced by mega farmers relying on tools that they certainly aren't producing themselves, you have this strange fairy tale idea of what a farmer is and does.
lastly, and fittingly, you are also ignorant of how modern production works, no place is self-sufficient, don't delude yourself into this bullshit, all the fucking society is extremely interconnected, hell you don't even need a bad harvest, if that farming town runs out of diesel they aren't producing shit anymore
What's funny about that is that I've got people close to me in the farming industry and let me tell you, I would put my faith in them before anyone from the city to be self sufficient.
Not all farms are mega farms and even the people working on mega farms have more than enough knowledge to grow food without all the tech they currently use. The reason they need it is to... Feed cities! If you only have hundreds of even thousands to feed you don't need fields that's are tens of thousands of acres.
Hell, look at poor countries, there's tons of self sufficient communities out there, none of them are urban. Why? Because food doesn't grow on concrete.
