It’s wrong, or averaged using all the areas no one can live and have a decent job. I make about that and I struggle quite a bit. Just average rent here pulls over 40% of my after-tax income. I’m not doing as bad as a lot of people here, but I’m not really thriving either. Savings are hard to come by when feeding my family costs $500 more a month than it did in 2020. If we didn’t own and had to deal with the recent rent increases, we’d be homeless by now.
But it sounds like you have dependents, meaning your number should be much higher than what the article gives - it’s talking about single people. So if anything, it’s evidence that your experience is justified and that you’re right - you have it tough.
Oh yeah, I mean, my rent quote in the above comment was for a 1 bedroom apartment 12ft from the tracks in the bad part of town lol. Rent on my house would be around $4500/mo and up. Thank god we bought when we did.
