Unfortunately, while California does have one of the strongest economies in the world, there is something that global trade can't address: Water.
Most of California's water comes from rivers that flow from out of state. It would be really easy to destroy a hypothetical independent California by disrupting water flow from the east.

Yeah an independent California wouldn't allow this weakness to exist they would take it or lose independence trying. It's existential.

My point is that California could not just secede, it would result in a massive civil war as almost 2/3 of US domestic food production comes from California, the corn belt is all just that, livestock feed and ethanol tax subsidies.

I mean, it could. It would just need an army to do so and the belief that they could reasonably fight for and secure this water weakness. Civil war though, yes.
