Mr. Tischler said that his client had “no prior history of violent or hateful behavior” and that he was cooperating with law enforcement. His client acknowledged the seriousness of the charges, he said, but had not been able to control his actions.

Yeah. What else is he supposed to say? The guy basically told the cops "Here's exactly what I did. Also, I meant to kill them, because of their race." Basically, all he can do is threaten to make them waste resources by dragging out the case as much as he can, to increase leverage to get as merciful a plea deal as possible.
